Not sure if this was posted before.

So Essendon now benefits with a rule change.

          Jon Ralph:
What a win for EFC. Learn more about Isaac Kako, of Iraqi heritage and a player some recruiters believe is more talented than Nick Watson. Essendon has just been told they have access to the academy pick wherever he lands in the draft. A huge win for a club looking for a small forward
Looks like they are going back to old system.

Fair enough. Depends on the discount, or perhaps no discount. Especially if there’s no draft points after pick 40 from now on. But I do r have a problem with it if clubs have to pay fair value.

Pretty sure the AFEL wouldn't be making this change if it was us bellyaching. In fact, the AFEL changed the rules because other clubs were bellyaching about how well we fared from the previous arrangements.

I'm happy enough if no discount is offered and prescribed pick pricing is what it costs to trade into a position to land academy prospects, or a points penalty in the next draft round being applied to secure first round academy talent.

But in this case privilege has spoken, and we'll just wait for another lowly club to benefit from it until it's addressed the other way again.

Funny how they change the rule to suit Essendon.

The rest of the competition will be compensating for the "poor" treatment of Essendon post the drugs saga for at least another decade.

They should really get Sheedy more involved as quickly as they can to restore some balance to the equation.

                        Twomey: Changes vast…

“Among other changes the AFL has put to clubs as proposed changes for 2024 include: rookies to have the capacity to remain on the rookie list for up to five years (increased from three) subject to games eligibility; introducing contract length as a key determinant in the free agency compensation formula; and allowing father-sons to be listed as rookies instead of senior-listed players if they do not receive a bid in the national draft.

There still remains differing views around when changes should be applied on draft’s bidding system, draft value index and the points discount for clubs.

The trading of picks two years in advance is expected to be brought into this year’s trade period, while trading of mid-season picks will likely come in next year, clubs were told.”

Re: Future Priority Access Thread (Inc. Father/Son, Academy Players)

Essendon is set to secure a massive draft win with the AFL handing the club access to the draft?s best small forward Isaac Kako after his barnstorming Under-18 championships tagged him as a possible top-10 pick.

Kako?s parents were both born in Iraq but came to Australia 25 years ago as the nation was in uproar at the time of the Gulf War.

The AFL is not aware of another Iraqi-born player in their ranks, with the Calder Cannons livewire part of Essendon?s academy program for the last five years.

AFL football boss Laura Kane informed clubs at the CEO?s conference on Tuesday that the league would act this year to allow all clubs access to academy prospects across all rounds of the draft.

This year Victorian clubs could only secure those academy picks if they drifted past pick 40.

Rival clubs had wondered whether the Dons might simply use their first round selection anyway on the skilful, dynamic small forward if the current rules remained given their need for an elite small forward.

But the Dons can now assess rival bids and then decide whether to match them.

AFL official Kane told the clubs in a briefing note on Tuesday night: ?There was a general view that changes to NGA Academy access should not be delayed, as we don?t want to see Indigenous or diverse talent further decline. We want to act now?.

As a result the Dons can match a bid anywhere from pick 1 until he is selected, with St Kilda also able to secure their academy defender Adrian Cole.

They also have access to academy player Lennox Hoffman, while West Coast has academy player Malakai Champion.

Some recruiters believe Kako will end up a better player than Hawthorn?s Nick Watson, taken at pick 5 by Hawthorn last year.

It has been many years since Essendon has had an elite small forward as the likes of Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, Angus Monfries and Orazio Fantasia among the club?s best small forwards in the past 20 years.

But Kako is an explosive match-winning forward who kicked eight goals across four championship games and averaged eight score involvements.

The Essendon fan who idolises Shai Bolton is also great mates with Caddy, attending school together at Parade College and winning a Herald Sun Shield as teammates.

He was the first to congratulate Caddy on draft night last year when he was selected with the No.10 pick by Essendon.

The AFL is keen to incentivise non-traditional pathways to the game and as a result will make those changes to allow Victorian clubs to draft academy talent within the first 20 picks.

The league changed the rules after academy player Jamarra Ugle-Hagan was taken with the No.1 overall pick by the Western Bulldogs, but Andrew Dillon said last year: ?The NGAs are an important pillar because we want a game that represents our entire country. In terms of the NGAs I think we over-corrected and the formula lies somewhere in between.?

Kako told the Herald Sun earlier this year of his heritage: ?Both my parents were born in Iraq. Probably came here about 25 years ago. I was born here. Obviously they (my parents) didn?t know much about footy but my older brother started playing when he was 16 years old. I went to all his games when I was younger and bloody loved it.?

Calder Cannons coach Sam Willatt said the Dons had worked hard with Kako in recent years to help improve his football, as had the Coates League club.

?He is just a joy to coach and a joy to watch. His ability to create a goal and his evasiveness across the nationals, I have never seen anything like it. What we haven?t seen across the carnival is he is a terrific aerial player as well. He has really appreciated his time at Essendon and the effort they have put in with the academy and really values the relationships he has made there.?

Why have they done this backflip?

I don't get the AFL at all.

Melbourne missed Mac Andrew, St.Kilda missed Mackenzie they would be ropeable.

Mackenzie being an academy player was a complete farce. Pretty sure the idea is to give greater pathways to kids from migrant and First Nations backgrounds, not to hold someone’s hand into the AFL because their dad keeps a summer residence in France like he’s Ted DiBiase.

                              Rule change still dumb though.
