An interesting article from the Mongrel Punt about using your draft picks to match an early bid (JUH, Darcy, Daicos, etc) versus passing and using the picks.

DRAFT POINTS, GAMBLES, AND THE ELUSIVE SURE THING?

Interesting analysis but personally it has a huge gaping flaw - list spots.

If you took six blokes instead of one, how do you get them all on your list? Mass delistings? Then how do you get them all in your side to develop?
How many years has it been since we've cut hard enough to bring in six players via the main draft (excluding trades and rookies)?

For me, I take the no 1 draft pick (or 2, or 3) every day of the week.

For us in our position last year and this year - no doubt. We don't need or have the room for that many draftees.

But for Collingwood it's an interesting question. Of course they take Daicos, they have to, but could they be better off with a scattergun approach and bet on unearthing 3 or 4 good players? Simply because their list is shot and needs a fairly large turnover.

Daicos may well be that mid who becomes a number 1 mid.
They're rarely found outside the top handful of selections and they're already screwed themselves this year anyway via their pick swap with GWS (they did it last year before knowing how crap they'd be this year).

If they still held their full compliment of picks this year I doubt they'd still do it. After all they've been through letting not just a no 1 pick, but a Daicos, slip through their fingers would be too much for their supporters to bear.

            GWS have Pick 2

Those *!*!*!*!s have said they would bid on Darcy, even if Daicos is available.

If true, we will need a lot more draft points.

Cal Twomey still has Darcy at 3.

North have said this year they will bid on Darcy. GWS at pick 2 have also said they will bid on Darcy if they can. If these clubs are telling the truth, that’s a headache to juggle points and trades. We can absolutely do both, but it’s tighter at say Pick 2.

Everyone seems be United on Darcy at 3.

                    ESPN:

While Charlie McKay (son of Andrew) and Ewan MacPherson (son of Steve) are eligible as overagers to join Carlton and Western Bulldogs, respectively. McKay has been a reliable and consistent ball winner through the midfield for Sandringham, while MacPherson's competitiveness and tackling has been a highlight.

As overagers, Domanic Akuei for Carlton presents an intriguing consideration late draft as a high leaping defender while Cody Raak for the Western Bulldogs is a prospect who has been thereabouts, and as a rebounding defender may be looked at late draft or as a rookie.

To my uneducated eye, Raak has shown more than Khamis did at the same age.

The GF prize money, win or lose, we can just cut a part for a base two years for Raak ideally as a rookie. Seems like a good investment.

                              VIC METRO COMBINE CANCELLED

DRAFT prospects based in metropolitan Victoria have suffered another blow with Sunday’s NAB AFL Draft Combine cancelled. Nearly 40 players were set to show their wares with athletic testing at the Holden Centre after their Vic Country counterparts underwent testing last week.

But the AFL has decided to take a cautious approach under current COVID-19 restrictions given many of the players have exams coming up and cancelled the event.

It comes after a second season where Victorian draft hopefuls have barely hit the field due to interruptions during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Western Bulldogs father-son Sam Darcy was due to miss the Combine testing with a foot injury that has required treatment.

The 18-year-old, who is expected to attract a top-five bid at November's NAB AFL Draft, has had a minor stress injury in his foot.

                              ……….

I’ve heard he might need to amputate the foot. Would be surprised if we even draft him. So surely no club bids on him…

Hopefully it's only minor. Stress injuries can be recurring and tend to be worse the bigger the player. Darcy at least is still quite skinny, hope he's fine by the end of November so he can join in training straight away.
