Scouting Notes | 2021 Victorian Under 19 trials via: https://afl.draftcentral.com.au/2021...der-19-trials/

    #27 Sam Darcy (Oakleigh Chargers)
    204cm/73kg | 19/07/2003 | Tall Utility/Ruck

Arguably the highest profile prospect playing across either game, the Western Bulldogs father-son prospect well and truly put himself into pick one conversations, slotting six goals and missing some fairly gettable late shots to prove that he gets enough of the ball when he’s being targeted by his teammates. Darcy’s marking was strong throughout the game, with his reach and overall height meaning he was able to take marks relatively easily, even without getting much separation from his opponents. He made up for the difficulty in getting separation on certain opponents with solid leading patterns, switching direction and turning opponents around with his constant movement which was particularly helpful in transition, as Metro’s damaging ball users moved it quickly. There was a switch of opposition in the last quarter, and with a slower opponent Darcy was able to get separation with more ease, meaning he was able to just lead straight at the ball carrier rather than get carried away with complicating his leads. As mentioned, his marking was superb, but one particular one late in the game, where he got tripped up but still managed to take the mark when falling down perfectly demonstrated just how strong his marking was. A good set shot and able to snap the ball straight through the big sticks when on an angle, it was a great showing from Darcy, and one that’ll get Dogs fans extremely excited.
    #23 Cody Raak (Western Jets)
    193cm/80kg | 8/10/2002 | Defender

The Western Bulldogs NGA member has been one of the strongest defenders in the NAB League this season, and continued that in the trial game for Metro. Looking most impressive in the first half, Raak was doing a lot of the same things he’s become renowned for, taking marks as a kick behind the play defender, spreading the opposition with his switch kicks and stopping opposition attacks with his tackling and defensive work. What was good to see, was how proactive he was in initiating offensive plays with his kicking, rather than always looking for safe options.

Sam Darcy highlights of his 6 goals. Great mark above his head, low and on the lead. Looks a natural forward.

Looks like they’ve taken it down. Or it’s a footy porn blocking thing for bulldogs fans. There was a lot to like. Heaps.

That’s the one. I can see why he considers himself a forward/ruck and not a defender.

                So Naughton to play back?

He's just as good in defence.

Naughton will be a forward for the rest of his career. And probably the best one in the league.

A 204cm full back that can pinch hit up forward or in the ruck when required, with Naughton and Marra up forward. Yeah, I can live with that.

Tongue in cheek Chef. I was never ever in the Naughton back camp

WESTERN BULLDOGS COACH SURPRISED BY RAPID IMPROVEMENT OF “ENTICING” FATHER-SON PROSPECT

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge can’t hide his excitement at the prospect of adding father-son draftee Sam Darcy to the side’s list at the end of the year, admitting he’s been taken aback by the teenager’s strong recent form.

Darcy, son of Bulldogs champion Luke, kicked six goals in Vic Metro's Under-19s scratch match against Vic Country last Sunday, which came on the back of starring for Scotch College in school footy.

The 17-year-old is likely to be taken early in November’s National Draft, with Collingwood father-son prospect Nick Daicos tipped to be this year’s number one pick.

Beveridge said Darcy showed “tremendous signs” during his two weeks training at Whitten Oval over the summer, and there was “a lot of room” on the club’s list for an “enticing” player of his attributes.

“Sam came and spent two weeks with us over pre-season and trained in the program, he was involved in some of our match practice and we felt comfortable enough to include him in that,” Beveridge told Sportsday.

“We’ve seen some tremendous signs, but he’s jumped out of the pack as everyone is pinpointing. Some of the things he did with us in those two weeks were exciting, but with a young fella like that he’s very proud like his dad (Luke) and very competitive.

“The prospect of Sam coming into our club is enticing, I haven’t really seen him play but for him to do what he did at that level (last weekend), I’m not sure we were expecting that to happen so quickly.

“He’s still slight, I’m not sure exactly how tall he is yet. Our list isn’t totally endowed with key position players and ruckmen, so there’s a lot of room for a player like Sam.

“To have an opportunity to bring him in is great for us.”

I posited on a reddit thread that I wasn't sure how much of the hype and Darcy rocketing into the top three is based purely on just being too tall for anyone to stop up forward. Someone had this to say in response

He's got extremely good leading patterns and is switched on so can take advantage in transition when the opposition turn it over. The big question mark on him as a forward is pretty much what you've raised, if he was 7 centimeters shorter would he be beating these guys in marking contests? All well and good beating up on 193cm defenders at U19s level but when he's up against a Moore, Andrews, Ballard, Reid, Cox, etc. will he be able to do enough to create separation as a forward?

It's why I think, long term, he'll be best as a defender or ruck, unless you can find a way to isolate him with a short, slow defender

Yeah I'm not sure when the AFL world will stop hyping up tall forwards kicking bags at U18 level. It just doesn't prove much when you've got 10cm+ on your opponent. I'm not saying they wouldn't have talent, but how many tall forwards drafted high have gone on to have big careers at AFL level?

Obviously, having Darcy as a KPD is preferable for us. I wonder what position he played when he did match practice with us during preseason.
