Depends what you mean by "high", but if you look at recent Coleman medalists they are all either first round picks or weren't available to be drafted:

Hawkins - pick 41 under the old father son rules. Not sure how high he would have gone but I think he was highly rated.
Cameron - bypassed the draft but would have been a high pick.
    Riewoldt - pick 13
    Buddy - pick 5
    Kennedy - pick 4
    Roughead - pick 2

You have to go back to Brenda Fevola at pick 38 to find an exception. The next wave in the King brothers, Naughton and McKay are all top 10 picks. They don't have to be number 1, but most quality KPFs seem to be found early in the draft.

I'm talking top 3. And the one's you have mentioned aren't what I'm considering "tall" forwards as such. Buddy yeah but he is certainly an exception. The others are around 195cm. I'm talking the 200+ guys who were that big in U18s.

I totally understand your point on the Tom Boyd and Jon Patten types, but I wasn't responding to that assertion, simply that quality KPFs are almost always high draft picks.

Yeah agreed. The best tall forwards do typically go high in the draft. You'd just hope the recruiters are looking at the reasons why these talls are dominating.

Re: Future Priority Access Thread (Inc. Father/Son, Academy Players)

THE CLEAR DRAFT GAP AND HOW BULLDOGS FATHER-SON HAS JUMPED INTO CONTENTION

AFL draft guru Cal Twomey feels there is a clear gap between the sharp end of the talent pool and those chasing the leading pack.

According to Twomey, Oakleigh Chargers gun Nick Daicos and South Adelaide’s Jason Horne are right now the two elite youngsters ahead of the 2021 National Draft later this year.

But there is now competition from a Western Bulldogs father-son prospect in Sam Darcy who has been impressing recruiters with his performances in recent weeks.

The son of former Dogs ruckman Luke kicked a bag of six goals for Vic Metro under-19s in a trial match last weekend, seeing him rocket into contention.

Speaking on SEN’s Bob & Andy of prospective Collingwood father-son Daicos and AFL-ready South Australian Horne, Twomey said: “They’re right up there.

“They’ve got a new contender with Sam Darcy whose performances over the past eight weeks in particular have pushed him into number one contention.

“He’s the new name and the buzz player. Recruiters are very excited about what they’ve seen from him in the past couple of months.

“We spoke on your show about six to eight weeks ago where I said he’d be a first-round pick.

“He’s gone from strength to strength since and he just continues to perform and level up. He’s joined that group and he’s very different (as a player).”

Twomey offered further insight into Daicos, the son of Magpies champion Peter, and SANFL midfielder Horne and why he has them ahead of the other talented youngsters around the country.

“Nick Daicos is a very different player to Jason Horne in that he’s more skilful around goal, he’s inside-outside, he’s a little bit smaller, he hasn’t had the match-ups against men that Horne has had opportunity to do,” he added.

“The one game Daicos did have at VFL level earlier this year when he was close to best on ground for Collingwood’s VFL side.

“Whereas Horne’s played senior footy in the SANFL for a year and a half now and has not dominated to the same level obviously, it’s a different standard, but Daicos is clearly the best player in Victoria, I think, in terms of his midfield capabilities.

“From a point of view of the gap between those guys, I think there is a clear gap.

“I’ve got Finn Callaghan (Sandringham Dragons) at number four and I think there is a gap between the first three and then Callaghan and then the next group.

“There’s certainly a separation between Daicos and Horne at the top end and then the next group coming through, in my view.”

              .
Would have been no.1 if on the open market Dominant.

I remember a mate, who still works in footy/recruitment saying when Tomahawk was 17 - "The cats would pick him in their AFL side this weekend if they could".

I thought this draft was meant to be loaded?

Sounding more and more likely Darcy will be top 5 and probably top 3.

AFL Draft 2021: Luke Beveridge on father-son prospect Sam Darcy and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan

Luke Beveridge had issued a pre-emptive strike against clubs who might bid on father-son Sam Darcy with the No.1 overall pick, adamant the Crows unfairly denied Riley Thilthorpe a $10,000 investment package last year.

The 203cm key position-forward ruckman, and son of Dogs board member Luke Darcy, is considered a real chance to land in the first two spots after six goals for Vic Metro last weekend.

As revealed by the Herald Sun last year, Adelaide was happy to follow its own draft order to bid on Dogs NGA player Jamarra Ugle-Hagan despite knowing Dogs list manager Sam Power would match that bid.

It meant Ugle-Hagan was handed the mantle as the No.1 overall pick and accepted a $10,000 investment package from AFL sponsor as the first player chosen.

No.2 pick Thilthorpe has shown he could easily have been that player, given his exceptional early displays, but Ugle-Hagan was, by consensus, the best kid in the land.

Now history could repeat, with the Dogs sure to match any bid for Darcy, with Beveridge suggesting those kind of tactics were “vindictive” and against the best interests of the player who ultimately went to that club.

North Melbourne is set to have the No.1 overall pick on ladder order and could bid on both Pies father-son Nick Daicos and Darcy before taking the third-best player in SA midfielder Jason Horne.

Beveridge told 3AW Darcy might get bid on with the No.1 overall pick.

“He might and it was interesting last year with “Marra”, ultimately he gets the NAB portfolio, he gets the cash reward, he gets the recognition, with the club in Adelaide which nominated him and Riley Thilthorpe misses out on that,” he said.

“Personally if you know the Dogs are going to take him and you have the No 1 pick, wouldn’t you want your lad who is coming in to get that and let your lad have that even though you want to make us pay. There are not that many vindictive list managers and recruiters in the comp.”

The Dogs have their first and fourth-round picks but could easily trade in more points, so they will not have an issue with matching that bid.

Beveridge said he was open to playing Ugle-Hagan in his forward set-up after a month-long delay with concussion and VFL scheduling issues with Covid.

“I think the circumstance that escapes (media) is a month and a half ago we named him as emergency, he was running out games in a healthier fashion and was really productive and we loved the way he was going about it and he got the concussion and missed a month of footy and now he’s coming back into action. He had a tough day at Coburg on the weekend, but he had some valuable contributions.

“So now we are looking for him to play some footy and we are hoping he makes his debut some time in the near future but we will see how he goes. We are not wedded to any particular formation on our forward line. He plays well and he will be considered.”

That tells me we should adjust our strategies to needing 2,400 Draft Points (Pick 1 less 20% discount).

Not sure about that. Look at the pressure that's been piled on Ugle-Hagan as the #1 pick. There is such pressure that goes with the status. Yet Tilthorpe goes unnoticed largely and gets a free ride.

If I was North I would definitely take Darcy/Daicos and force us to use a higher pick. It means their ultimate pick goes at 3 - ouyt of the spotlight

I've never seen a kid who reminds me of his dad as Sam Darcy. He platys so much like Luke.
