AFL draft sells hope but system provides no guarantee of glory
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-12-08/afl-draft-2020-speculative-means-of-selecting-talent/12958004At the best of times, the AFL draft is more a speculative act of distributing talented youngsters rather than a science. Imagine the uncertainty when clubs draft schoolboys who did not play football this year due to COVID-19, writes Richard Hinds. The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.Comment

Re: 2020 draft watch
Isiah Winder
Peel Thunder, WAFL / Eaton Boomers
Height: 180cm
Weight: 79kg
16/05/02
Small forward/midfielder who progressed from Under-18 level with Peel this year where he averaged 28 disposals in five matches to play three senior games as the year unfolded. His speed and goal sense are his weapons using his neat step through traffic and clean hands to create opportunities. A real stand out at the Western Australian Draft Combine finishing No 1 ranked for speed (2.87 seconds for 20 metres) and Standing Vertical jump (76cm) and 3rd for Agility (8.18 seconds for AFL Agility run).
STRENGTHS:
Athleticism
Speed/agility
Vertical leap
Kicking/creativity
Clean hands
Football smarts
IMPROVEMENTS:
Consistency
Tyler Brockman
Height: 181cm
Weight: 75kg
Subiaco, Western Australia
Small Forward/Midfielder
Subiaco Colts premiership player Tyler Brockman has put himself in AFL Draft contention this year with a terrific top-age season, rotating through the midfield from his usual forward post. The 181cm prospect is a high-impact type, able to break the game open with his explosive speed and creativity in the forward half. Having previously been a part of Western Australia’s Under 16 squad, Brockman has shown a good level of commitment in 2020 to help fulfil his potential and stand out as one of the WAFL Colts’ most watchable talents. His form was enough to warrant a state combine invite, confirming interest from AFL clubs, while also earning selection in the WA Under 18 All-Stars fixtures. This, after not being included in the most recent AFL Academy intake. He also comes from decent pedigree as the nephew of former Fremantle and Gold Coast player, Greg Broughton.
STRENGTHS:
X-Factor
Explosiveness
Speed
Tackling
Kicking
Impact
IMPROVEMENTS:
Consistency
Midfield craft/accumulationComment

The whiteboard being visible in the background trick has been used multiple times, and they even posted a "Welcome to the Bombers Shaun Atley" highlights video immediately prior to the draft where they overlooked him for Dyson Heppell (good call).
I think a kind of reverse Hanlons razor applies with them, "Never ascribe to incompetence that which is adequately explained by Dodoro thinking he is a genius but actually just makes him look like a dill for no apparent gain".I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

They have a history of this. I suspect it's Dodoro just trying to be clever, although I'm not sure what he achieves by it.

If Dodo put half as much effort into junior talent identification as he did into his bullshit psych warfare garbage maybe Essendon wouldn’t be in the shape that they’re in.- I'm a visionary - Only here to confirm my biases -Comment

You can see Dodoro sitting in his reclined chair, whiskey in hand, admiring his own gamesmanship - which nobody else gives a shit about.W00F!Comment

Knightmare's final phantom draft:
Every club, every pick: ESPN's full AFL phantom draft
After Jamarra he has us picking:
58. Western Bulldogs - Phoenix Spicer
Height, Weight: 173cm, 64kg
Profile: Arguably this year's fastest, Spicer takes on the game with ball in hand like no other in this draft, possessing elite speed and agility. With his athletic attributes and how instinctive his play is and one-touch he is at ground level, he possesses intriguing scope to develop as a crumbing forward.FFC: Established 1883
Premierships: AFL 1954, 2016 VFA - 1898,99,1900, 1908, 1913, 1919-20, 1923-24, VFL: 2014, 2016 . Champions of Victoria 1924. AFLW - 2018.Comment

Re: 2020 draft watch
That's at least two phantom drafts now which have Essendon bidding on Campbell with pick 9. Why?
If they rate him as one of the three players they want to pick up in their "super draft" why would they not bid on him with pick 7, even if they rate him third out of the guys they want to draft. It means Sydney is less likely to match, and if they do makes them pay more (something i think Dodoro likes the idea of). There is literally no downside to doing so, and gives Essendon the best chance of picking him up. I believe this is the reason we bid on Keays and then Dunkley prior to picking up Collins, despite Collins being our first pick of that lot (hahahahaha).
I just think it's a dumb way of doing it unless you want to keep Sydney accountable but also be nice about it knowing they will match regardless of the pick you nominate him at.I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

Re: 2020 draft watch
Also interesting that they have Reef McInnes being bid on and then not matched.
Presumably part of the reason Collingwood grabbed pick 14 off us (aside from saving face) was to get in ahead of a bid for McInnes. If it works out and McInnes slides past that pick (and 16) they can legitimately come out and talk about how the trade did enable them to get three first rounders this year (with McInnes being the third obviously). However if a bid comes for him prior to either of those picks it means a pick is swallowed up and the Treloar trade is worth even less than imagined, and if they don't match (which is super interesting in itself) they only get the two first rounders.
And they have very little options to trade out those picks for shrapnel to match a bid then trade their way back in after grabbing him as tey would have to move both 14 and 16 to do so and couldn't grab either of those back iirc.I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

Re: 2020 draft watch
Didn’t we all flag at the time that 14 was right about where the bid for McInness was coming?
Also - is it not a bit insane that the picks from the Treloar trade are about to be used without the trade finalised?- I'm a visionary - Only here to confirm my biases -Comment
