    Mid Season Draft 2023 Discussion

Currently we hold Pick 3. With one actual list vacancy, with O'Donnell a Cat B.

Assuming we don’t sustain any critical LTI's, and have the one pick what should we do?

    - Pass and save the salary
    - Get a highly talented top age kid before the ND, play the long game
    - Get the a in-form state leaguer
    - Look for an unlucky player out of the AFEL system who could possibly make it
    - Put another Footscray VFL player on the list
    - Address a current list need, recruit for needs (which would be?)

At this very early stage, I'd like to grab a kid and play the longer game. If we can get a highly rated kid at the pointy end of the MSD, added to O'Donnell plus Buss, Clarke, Harvey G, Baker, Lobb & Jones and then have dibs on Crofty as a F/S and have a bounty of picks and cash on hand for 6 months time (maybe a FA?). The 2022-2023 list management could be excellent over the two periods, assessed together, as Sam Power must be running out of ink in his pens at the rate he’s re-signing our younger talent.

Ultimately I think we will likely get an inform 19 year old who was overlooked at last years draft.
I'd say we are monitoring a few scenario's though if injuries start to mount up.

Anyone on your wish list who missed out getting drafted last year?

I'll need to see some more games. As soon as I can I will add them to this thread.

We do need to see where we are placed at the time.

If we get a few wins and are a chance, we need to add someone who can play immediately and in a position we are struggling either due to injury or lack of personnel.

Should we be struggling in the W/L we should pick someone who could make us better long term.

Poulter could be a chance here. His looked good the last 2 vfl games. We would be calling for him to come in this week if he were on the list imo.

VFL. Honestly, he'd be competing with Baker for a spot and it give us would be marginal improvement at best.

I suspect your post about a 19 year old is closer to the mark. Harvey Gallagher and Lachie Young were both taken at the draft as 19 year olds. If one of English or Sweet is injury we may opt for ruck cover instead.

Good question GVGjr. I wonder now with the likes of West lingering in the VFL , his not playing his natural position of inside mid. I question how much "development" needs to be put into him to play different positions. I am not clear on the KPI measurements, but the fact that McNeil and McComb are ahead of him, its a concern.

The question I have , whoever we recruit :
Q1. will we be playing them in their natural position ?
Q2. Do we keep on this multiple position route , with player development? Its interesting, Richmond have a single player role approach.
Q3. Do we get another developing ruckman and invest in him a few years ?

I think our focus will be to identify a 19yo who is in good form and get a jump on the other clubs before the national draft. That way you aren't praying that they're still available for your next pick. You also get them into the system a bit earlier which could be a bonus.

Everything we do from now until 2024 should be based on getting players that can run. If we think there is someone available at mid-season then that’s great otherwise wait until the season is complete.

Invest in a small forward or a key defender imo.

There is a chance that Jordan Croft could be that tall defender so we may not have to add another.
A mid and a small forward would be nice additions.

With a major injury to Bruce, should we be on the look out for another KP Defender?

Between Keath, Gardner and Jones we probably have sufficient coverage for that role. Unless there's an outstanding mature prospect I'd look at someone we'd otherwise take at the draft as an overager (ala Gallagher)
