As long as they are winning drafts/trade periods and losing matches I'm happy.

I do get the criticism - particularly when you see the failure of clubs to bid on the Brisbane and Gold Coast prospects - but at the same time I have some sympathy for the Bombers recruiting team...if they DIDN'T trade out of 9 and a bid came, well, now where would they be??
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Shifter was quite restrained last night - there were only 7 Pendlebury clones and 15 future Brownlow medallists from last night's draft pool.

          Re: 2024 AFL Draft - Nights 1 and 2

          Here goes:

          Richmond - Sam Lalor
Great pick. Love it. Best player in it.

          North Melbourne - Finn O'Sullivan
Hmm. Don't understand this one. I kind of 'get' the hype with O'Sullivan 'cos he does cool stuff (overhead mark as an example) but have never seen him play a good game. I don't understand.

          Carlton - Jagga Smith
He's a pretty nice mid. I get it.

          Adelaide - Sid Draper
OK - sounds like they didn't want him but I don't understand. Runs out of trouble. Exciting.

Brisbane (match Melbourne bid) - Levi Ashcroft
He's a small forward who thinks he's a mid. I don't quite understand the hype here but it's a free hit so you gotta do it.

          Melbourne - Harvey Langford
Like this. Great selection. Left footed mid...Melbourne list team are the best.

          Richmond - Josh Smillie
I don't really like this one so much - I mean - he's top 10 and a good player but I don't see the difference in his game...I would have picked Lindsay here.

          St Kilda - Tobie Travaglia
Nice player. Not sure what he's gonna be but could start in the back half so that will let him build.

Gold Coast (match St Kilda bid) - Leo Lombard
He's exciting but he isn't big...those mid size, barrel chested dudes...again, free hit so whatchagonnado!

          St Kilda - Alix Tauru
Yeah - he's a tall back who isn't tall and he is at his best intercepting. I like the outcomes but I'm firmly in the "don't draft intercept defenders in the first round" camp and whilst I see what the saints are doing (and I see the talent) I'm just not sure.

          Melbourne - Xavier Lindsay
Another left footer and this one can play in and out (though as an insider is a better first receiver than ball winner)...Melbourne recruiters do it again...

          Richmond - Taj Hotton
You have a million picks and take the injured one at 12? I like the talent but just couldn't do it...I guess when you have this many picks, you can take chances.

Essendon (match Richmond bid) - Isaac Kako
          Exciting player, free hit...

          Richmond - Jonty Faull
Umm - lols. What?? A key forward who only gets it on the lead?? In 2025? I don't understand this one.

          Port Adelaide - Joe Berry
          Fast and exciting. Why not.

          West Coast - Bo Allan
          Kid can play.

          Fremantle - Murphy Reid
I like him but - as I have said - to me he's a forward who doesn't tackle and I'm not sure how that works...he is clever though.

          GWS - Oliver Hannaford
Yeah - been coming with a rush. Plays with urgency...not sure he's the cleverest player - he's the other side of the Murphy Reid coin to me where one is all angles and smarts and the other is all effort and energy.

          GWS - Harrison Oliver
The Giants taking a Vic Metro kid? Weird! He can kick it but he doesn't actually ever get the ball...so is kicking a useful skill if you never get it? Always leaves you wanting more.

          Western Bulldogs - Cooper Hynes
Yep - fine. Hard working mid.

          Richmond - Luke Trainor
Again - at his best in space as an interceptor. Not for me here but he can catch it.

          Sydney - Jesse Dattoli
Seems the exact player Sydney doesn't need but aside from that is (to me) a bit of a Weightman clone without the highlights.

          Richmond - Harry Armstrong
See - I think he does what Faull doesn't which is mark in a contest. They've got em both now so...good??

          GWS - Cody Angove
Small. Fast-ish. Seems a massive reach but if they like the Swan Districts kid they got last year (sorry, name escapes me but he plays in the orange helmet) then Angove is (to me) the closest clone to him.

Brisbane (match Sydney bid) - Sam Marshall
FINALLY. Nice mid - good pick, free hit.

          Sydney - Ned Bowman
He does some exciting stuff...I guess he's the guy who looks dangerous and I suppose I would question whether he actually IS dangerous. He's that half-forward type who always seem to be in and out of teams...I like him fine but this seems high.

          North Melbourne - Matt Whitlock
He's tall and aggressive but I'm not sure he has ANY idea what's he's doing as a forward. Maybe going to become a defender??
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I still feel like Trainor is a massive concussion risk - I wouldn't have pulled the trigger early.

And North are nuts. Even with a F2 going back, their F1 is odds on to be a top 10 pick.

I know I spoke a bit about 'too high' etc but I just tried to keep it to one line opinions about players...let's face it, it's the first round of the draft - they're talented but not fully formed.

I don't know how we got Cooper Hynes at 20. I was told he plays like Petracca. Why didn't he go pick 1?

He was largely partnered with Langford this year as a forward/mid and Langford is probably my favourite kid in the draft.

Langford just has moments where he seems to say "follow me" and put the team on his back. It's not in highlights packages or combine results. I think he probably treats pretty slow for spirits too.

Hynes to me 'moves the ball forward' which is a criticism I have of some players we've been linked to (e.g. Gross).

I'm happier with taking Hynes over a few we were linked with (Hotton, Datolli)

Because St Kilda didn't have pick 21

From the snippets I've seen (not just highlights but 'every touch in a match' compilations) that seems quite true. Rarely goes sideways or back unless its maybe into the middle. Would rather fend off and move the ball forward than retreat back for more time/space

Yep. You can say the same of us trading our first last year and Croft coming after that. You make the best deal in certainty that you can. We got creative and went even bigger. They went conservative or couldn’t find a way to do bigger, or wanted to a multitude of firsts to rebuild (again). Essendon still have three first rounders over two seasons which is still a good result for them.
