Re: 2024 AFL Draft - Nights 1 and 2
Dons coming hard for prized first pick
Rival clubs believe Essendon wants to trade for the first pick of the national draft’s second round to snare key forward Jobe Shanahan.
Richmond holds the opening selection on night two at No.28 and the Bombers are understood to be trying to package their future first-rounder to move up from 37.
Teams thought Shanahan, who was overlooked during the first round on Wednesday night, was the player Essendon would target.
The 195cm Bendigo Pioneers forward played for the Bombers VFL side this year, kicking 11.3 from three matches.
Touted as a potential top-15 prospect, Shanahan was one of the sliders on night one, along with Murray Bushrangers tall forward Jack Whitlock, Sturt ruckman Alex Dodson and Eastern Ranges midfielder Christian Moraes.
Richmond has already taken two tall forwards with its six selections – Jonty Faull and Harry Armstrong – so is considered unlikely to want Shanahan.
But if the Tigers trade back to 37, they will probably be passing up on Dodson, whom they have long been linked to.
Geelong might try to swoop on that Richmond pick to target Dodson.
This masthead reported on Saturday that the Cats really liked the All-Australian big man, but they would need to trade up to get him because their first pick was not until 42.
After stunning the draft by dealing its 2025 first-rounder for the last pick on night one so it could take Bushrangers swingman Matt Whitlock, North Melbourne was understood to be looking to again trade back into the early part of the second round.
North Melbourne’s next pick in this draft is No.54.
Suns and Saints also after early pick
Gold Coast and St Kilda are among the clubs eager to acquire early selections on night two, with the second pick of the night – held by the Western Bulldogs – also in clubs’ sights.
Dandenong Stingrays key defender Noah Mraz has been a player of interest for Gold Coast and was a potential top-15 pick at the beginning of the season before being sidelined by a foot injury.
The Suns have three future first-round selections at their disposal.
Like Geelong, St Kilda is thought to be keen on ruckman Alex Dodson given Rowan Marshall and Max Heath are the only recognised rucks on their list.

It suits us too - we seemed to play much better when (to the eye at least) we were willing to take more chances with forward handball out of stoppage then we did by handballing around to try and find a player to release by foot.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment
