Separate to the drafts, five players joined their clubs as category B rookies - Jayden Nguyen (Essendon), Lachlan Gulbin (Gold Coast), Ricky Mentha (Melbourne), Benny Barrett (Port Adelaide) and Malakai Champion (West Coast).
Jayden Nguyen would be the first ever Aussie - Vietnamese to get onto an AFL list?

We can still select a rookie kid not selected. Or A DFA. Or A state leaguer. But without the time pressure to do it today.
We can trial a ruck, small forward and small defender and see who will make the biggest difference amongst the playing group.
We did this a few years ago when we selected Scott. We overlooked Raak, Preston & MacPherson. Ultimately looked at our options with patience and made the best call. Doing it again.

I like rucks that are a decent mark. Looks like Boyd isn’t that, plus he is short for a ruck. Presume he has a decent leap or is in Hudson mould in being able to outmuscle oppo ruck.
I think we need another specialist ruck as Smith looks iffy to me (not a good mark & short). If English is injured I’m not sure what we’d do that wouldn’t significantly harm our season. Lobb in defence & Darcy as relief ruck & mainly forward is good for us & don’t want them as main ruck or even 50/50 share.
Other then Boyd, are there other rucks that might be worth trialling?

Our day will come
And we'll have everything.
We'll share the joy
Just like '54 again.

Tom Downie for a year, although he's on the older side for a ruckman. Crossley after a strict diet.
Ajang Kuol mun is a project ruck with everything except tank (poor 2km time, although he ran it with a bung knee).
Top vertical leap in the country and quick. 202cm. Another in the Geelong region, he's 22 but probably as raw as Lachie Smith

There’s a (blocked) HUN article from last week saying St Kilda were zeroing in on him.

Saints are apparently interested as well.

thanks BT for the fab explanation, your footy insights are incredible
Additionally, we could be interested in a player that another club is interested in but had a higher pick. For instance, Baker sat out the rookie draft and we picked him up as a DFA rookie.
Reading today that we and the Saints both might have interest Harry Boyd. I don’t know if he nominated for the Rookie Draft (he may have). But for argument sake he did then the Saints could’ve taken him before us. If he didn’t nominate, then he can join the club of his choosing in the SSP period. So there’s a world (like Baker) where we might have gotten someone to hold off nominating for rookie draft so we could snap them up.
Or it might just be the original answer I gave. But I couldn’t rule out this possibility as clubs do do it and we’ve done it recently.

Carlton and Essendon will be targets for hopefuls frozen out by during the AFL’s draft week, as the fight for a summer train-on spot begins.
With the drafts now finished, the next chance for players to get on an AFL list will be the summer supplemental period (SSP) in February.
Both the Bombers and Blues kept two spots open on their rookie lists for summer signings by passing up twice during Friday’s rookie draft.
The Blues have promised cut pair Sam Durdin and Matt Carroll a chance to train with the club again and push for a SSP spot, while former Hawthorn No. 6 pick Denver Grainger-Barras and Blues VFL ace Liam McMahon will get a go during pre-season.
Clubs can have two players train per open list spot, and last summer those players were paid $1000 per week to put their hands up.
Essendon has told delisted defender Kaine Baldwin he is welcome to return in summer and target one of the Bombers’ spots, while Jaxon Prior has been linked to the club.
The Western Bulldogs kept a close eye on SANFL star ruck Harry Boyd amid intense interest from St Kilda leading into the draft.
Boyd was overlooked as the Saints plucked teen ruck Alex Dodson, and the joint Magarey medallist from Norwood could be in the sights of the Dogs as a Tim English back up.
“He certainly deserves a crack at the AFL, he’s the best player in the SANFL and clubs would be silly not to look at him,” Norwood general manager of football Richard Kelly said.
“We’re expecting clubs to offer him a train-on spot in the next couple of days and if he gets an opportunity, good luck to him.”
Port Adelaide will invite North Melbourne VFL skipper Jack Watkins to audition for a SSP spot.
Fremantle has long been expected to sign former Cat and Power midfielder Quinton Narkle and didn’t lock him in during the rookie draft.
West Coast has been linked to cut Suns defender Sandy Brock.
Gold Coast also passed up in the rookie draft and can sign a player through the SSP.
Clubs will also be able to clear a spot on the list through long-term injuries or pre-season retirements, with Collingwood ending up with three SSP players last summer after Nathan Murphy retired.
DISCARDED SUN CHASES LIFELINE AT NORTH MELBOURNE
Delisted Gold Coast utility Darcy Macpherson hopes he can convince North Melbourne to throw him an AFL lifeline after beginning pre-season training with the Kangaroos this week.
Macpherson, 27, was delisted by the Suns in September after 97 games in nine seasons but believes he still has plenty of quality football left in him despite seeing limited opportunities under Damien Hardwick this year.
