1K a week to potentially have Boyd train with us seems like a terrific deal. Hopefully we will look at least a couple of players.

      Re: 2024 AFL Draft - Nights 1 and 2

This sounds like a plan to me.

      Lobb for Keath
      Darcy for Lobb
Boyd as the back up that Darcy could offer if needed this year
Croft left to develop at either end without extra pressure to ruck in an emergency

Plenty of midfielders plus a medium defender who can play on smalls and a small forward.

Plus Davidson is 23, Boyd 26 & Kennedy 28 so not just kids taken.

      Would reasonably balance things out.

I read somewhere they’ve tightened up on the number of training players to vacancies (2 maximum per vacancy). So if we wanted we could have Boyd and one other type of player fight it out if we want options.

My only concern is his size (198cm) and lack of marks per game. His hit outs and disposals are good. His year this year does look eerily similar to Sweet’s last year in the VFL. But I guess that still gives us a solid mature back up. For which I think is good.

For those playing at home here’s his SANFL career stats:

Looks like he made some solid improvements to his game this year, over at least 2023.

          Edit:

Check out his 2022 GF (1 point win)

          20 touches, 7 marks (3 contested), 3 clearances, 4 I50, 4 R50, 144 ranking points & 66 hit outs!

I understand the concerns over his size and lack of marking, like Sweet but with our structure, the amounts of talls we have now running around i think we can get away with that type of ruckman if English was to go down, to me the contest and clearance work is possibly more important to how we set up, the 6-6-6 rule and all of that, we have the big marking forwards so we need to dominate in that area, watching Sweet and having even gone past Soldo to me shows how important and valuable that type of big man can be to how a side can set up as he's turned from a VFL player waiting in the wings to an AFL finalists number one big man, Jones & Lobb but especially Marra, Naughton and Darcy can run up the ground and take those grabs and use their run.

              Re: 2024 AFL Draft - Nights 1 and 2

              Norwood article:

Norwood ruckman Harry Boyd has taken out the 2024 Magarey Medal as the SANFL’s Best and Fairest Player, in a tie with Sturt’s Will Snelling.

Boyd and Snelling each finished the count on 34 votes after the 19-round home and away season.

Boyd – who became the 13th individual Norwood Magarey Medallist – had 200 more hitouts and 50 more clearances than anyone else in the SANFL competition in 2024.

In an incredibly dominant season, Boyd averaged 20.7 disposals, 41.5 hitouts and 10 clearances across his 18 matches in 2024.

Boyd was the first ruckman to win the Magarey Medal since 2001, when Port Adelaide’s Ryan O’Connor drew with teammate Tony Brown.

“It’s a great honour,” Boyd told The Advertiser’s Andrew Capel.

“Midfielders catch the eye of the umpires in every competition, but being a ruckman I am in the middle of the ground, get to a lot of contests, a lot of stoppages and that’s probably what I base my game on.

“It’s very special and a reflection of a lot of hard work, not only from myself but the team and the Norwood Football Club.”

The 26-year-old has played 78 matches for Norwood since relocating to South Australia from Shepparton in Victoria ahead of the 2021 season.

His time in red and blue now includes the 2022 Premiership, 2022 Michael Taylor Medal (Norwood Best and Fairest), 2022 Jack Oatey Medal, 2024 Magarey Medal, 2024 R.O Shearman Medal, The Advertiser Team of the Year selections and multiple State Games for South Australia.

He will have a chance to add a second flag to his resume when Norwood plays in the 2024 SANFL Grand Final on Sunday, September 22.

Boyd started Monday night’s vote count strongly with two best on ground performances in rounds 1 and 2 against Sturt and Glenelg at The Parade to take an early lead over Snelling.

The Double Blues midfielder didn’t record any votes against Norwood in Round 1, but went on to poll in 10 consecutive matches to take a five-vote lead over Boyd at Round 13 (27-22).

Snelling missed two matches following the passing of his father, but returned in Round 15 and recorded votes in the following three matches to make it 34 after Round 17.

Boyd recorded three votes in Round 18 to tie with Snelling on 34. Both players didn’t poll a vote in the final round to share the Medal.

Boyd polled in 14 of his 18 matches, including eight 3-vote Best on Grounds.

Snelling polled in 13 of his 16 matches, with eight Best on Grounds.

West Adelaide’s Kobe Ryan finished third with 27 votes, and former winner North Adelaide’s Campbell Combe fourth on 23.

Last year’s winner Harry Grant was equal fifth on 20, while Norwood’s Baynen Lowe finished equal sixth on 15 votes.

Boyd also took home the 2024 R.O Shearman Medal on Monday night, an award voted on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis by the SANFL coaches during the minor round season.

Snelling was Runner Up in the R.O Shearman Medal, with the Sturt midfielder claiming 101 votes and Boyd 109.

On the same night, former Redleg and 2022 Norwood premiership player Nik Rokahr won the WAFL’s 2024 Sandover Medal for Swan Districts.

                Re: 2024 AFL Draft - Nights 1 and 2

Boyd played as a CHB for Werribee before moving to SA. Also played forward at Shepparton Bears. Seems to have only gone gull time ruck the last 3 seasons.

Surprised he would want to come here. An article I’m reading references

                - coach Jade Rawlings (still not a fan of ours after the Veale Deal)
                - list guy James Fantasia (who we sacked over low balling Cal Ward)
                - defensive coach Michael Talia (who still hasn’t found his phone)

Surely they’ve shot canned us hard as you can.

Also played at Murray Bushrangers with Josh Schache (a year younger).

I remember somebody (T&T?) mentioning he spent lots of time off the ground with an issue with a cut that wouldn't stay closed too.

I wonder if we will invite someone else. If nothing else it would be good to get a look at a kid that missed out, maybe get them to Footscray so we can keep an eye on them.

AFL clubs with list spots for the SSP and the potential recruits

[With the AFL Rookie and Pre-Season Drafts wrapped up, attention now shifts to the 2025 Supplementary Selection Period (SSP), offering a final chance for players to secure a spot on an AFL list. Several clubs, including Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, and West Coast, have kept spots open, with train-on opportunities already taking shape.

                              Clubs with SSP List Spots
Carlton: The Blues have two open rookie spots and are welcoming delisted players Denver Grainger-Barras (Hawthorn), Liam McMahon (Carlton VFL), Sam Durdin, and Matt Carroll to train over summer. Grainger-Barras, a former No. 6 draft pick, hopes to reignite his career as a key defender, while McMahon, a VFL Team of the Year forward, offers goal-scoring potential.

Essendon: The Bombers have extended opportunities to delisted defender Kaine Baldwin and are reportedly interested in Jaxon Prior. Baldwin, known for his defensive versatility, will compete for one of the club's two open spots.

Fremantle: Expected to sign former Port Adelaide and Geelong livewire Quinton Narkle, the Dockers remain active in filling their list. Narkle, a talented playmaker, looks likely to join close friend Shai Bolton in the midfield.

West Coast: The Eagles are linked to former Gold Coast defender Sandy Brock and flanker Coby Burgiel. Brock, a towering 198cm backman, was part of the Suns' VFL premiership side, while Burgiel, a former second-round pick, seeks to reignite his injury-affected career.

Port Adelaide: The Power are expected to offer North Melbourne VFL captain Jack Watkins a train-on opportunity. SANFL star Jez McLennan is also in their sights, potentially filling depth in the forward line.

Western Bulldogs: The Bulldogs will trial 27-year-old Dom Brew after an illustrious 2024 VFL season as captain of Werribee - leading their premiership and earning the JJ Liston Trophy as the league's best & fairest winner. With interest in SANFL ruckman Harry Boyd also, the Bulldogs could bolster their tall stocks. Boyd, a Norwood premiership ruckman, was overlooked during the draft but remains a strong candidate for an AFL lifeline.

Gold Coast: The Suns passed on several picks, leaving room for further signings. Prospects for their open spots remain unclear, but local talent could be considered during the SSP.

Despite training with North Melbourne, ex-Gold Coast utility Darcy Macpherson faces an uphill battle to secure an SSP spot, as the Kangaroos filled their list during the Rookie Draft and currently lack a vacancy.

However, Macpherson could still earn a spot if a pre-season long-term injury arises. For now, he could still contribute to North Melbourne's VFL side alongside 2024 draftee Oli Hotton while awaiting any potential AFL opportunities.

With the SSP set to run from February 3?28, clubs have ample time to assess and finalise their lists, leaving plenty of opportunity for overlooked players to secure a last-minute AFL lifeline.
Mentioned Boyd with us but not explicitly saying he is training with us.

Other clubs can also open up a list spot if a player suffers a long-term injury during the pre-season.
