Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews
Have recently brought, Bob Dylan, Charlie Parr, Dan Auerbach (the black keys lead singer) and St.Helens.
Have been in the mood for some bluesy rock and they seem to hitting the spot. Wouldn't mind having some more blues in my collection but I dont really own any so Im not sure where to start? Any suggestions?
I know a good 6 years ago anything on the Fat Possum label was a sure thing but now im not so sure.
R.L. Burnsides' collaboration with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion called "A Asspocket full of Whiskey' is fantastic.
I still also give the Fabulous Thunderbird's first album a burl every now and then too, nice blend of Texan Blues, and I've always been a fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan as well- Soul to Soul & Couldn't Stand the Weather are probably my favourite Stevie Ray Album's.Comment

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews
Anyone seen the 7 Blues films that were playing at the Nova 3/4 years back. Directed and orated by people like Scorcese, Wim Wenders and Clint Eastwood.
Some really good early blues in that. Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Son House, etc.
Check out Sister Rosetta Tharpe(she could crank a guitar) and JB Lenoir.Comment

The Temper Trap - Conditions
The Temper Trap, a local Melbourne band, released their first album on Friday; "Conditions". They have been likened to Radiohead and TV on the Radio, and have described themselves as "High Energy Sissy Rock", which both describes them well yet doesn't do them justice.
I've been a fan of theirs for a while since seeing them as the support act for Franz Ferdinand in January at the Palace, and being the first support act I've seen where I've been genuinely dissapointed to see them leave the stage, despite never having heard of them previously.
I've since seen them another time at the Corner Hotel, and can safely say they are fantastic live. Here is a run down of their debut album.
Love Lost: A song that builds up well (their speciality). I'm not sure it should be the opening track though. It's a good song though, and the bar of silence just prior to the bridge/last chorus sounds great, especially live.
Rest: This song isn't that great on the album, but live is a really high energy song that they opened with both times I saw them. Live they tend to play around with the main riff alot before the vocals even come in, while in this version it centres around the vocals.
Sweet Disposition: Their first single, you may have heard it on Triple J or some of the commercial stations (Nova, Fox maybe). I'm not sure if Triple M have caught on yet. It has a U2ish riff, and shows off Doug's great voice. Another one that builds up well.
Down River: One of my favourites on the album. Has a great chorus, and sounds great live.
Soldier On: Is a real slow builder, with the first 2/3rds of this song being pretty low key. The ending kicks up a bit, and is good without being great. One of the weaker songs on the album for mine, which is saying something cause its pretty good.
Fader: Probably the most obviously commercial song on the album, and their third single. Catchy chorus, but for me it's almost a bit boring. It's not really a song that builds up or gets better the more you listen to it. I can see it being popular though. Probably my second least favourite.
Fools: My least favourite song on the album, but it is growing on me. A bit quieter than a lot of the other songs on the album.
Resurrection: For me this is the best song on the album. Sounds pretty unique, his voice sounds great, and really builds up to a fantastic finish. I love everything about this song, and with its ending it definitely qualifies as a song that is a highlight live.
Science of Fear: Their second single, has great lyrics, builds up well and has a great pace. Fantastic live, and is only just behind Ressurection as the albums best song.
Drum Song: Rather unimaginatively named, this is an instrumental song that is awesome live, but only solid on the album.
The album got 5 stars in the Herald Sun two sundays ago, and there are big wraps on this band with the BBC putting them in their top 15 bands of 2009, and them having relocated to England for the Australian winter so they can tour Europe constantly.
They're a band that really out performs their album live, and in my opinion could become pretty big. A highly recommend this album.I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

If I could be arsed I'd do a track by track of the latest Future of the Left and Wilco album's, but you know, I'm pretty sure nobody needs or wants that much information. Suffice to say FOTL is the only album you really need to buy this year. Still digesting Wilco but it's growing on me.Park that car

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews
Went on a bit of a downloading spree and got four albums.
The first one was Children Collide's debut, 'The Long Now'. They're more of an older sounding rock band, similar to Tame Impala. It's a really solid album from top to bottom, and I'd reccomend it highly. The best song on it is probably 'Social Currency'.
Another one was Late of The Pier's album 'Fantasy Black Channel'. LoTP are part of the new-wave revival going on at the moment, but their is a notable hint of indie-electro to their music. They're very similar to The Klaxons. 'Whitesnake' is my favourite song, but it's pretty similar throughout.
I got The Do's album 'A Mouthful' after hearing their song 'On My Shoulders' on the Chillout Sessions compilation. I was expecting the album to be relaxed, but it's actually in a quite upbeat, pop-punk sort of style, similar to AIH. I really like this one, and it's probably my favourite of the four.
Finally, to feed my inner hip-hopper, I got Quasimoto's album 'The Unseen'. Quas is more of an early 90's MC, in the sense that he's not overly aggressive in the way he raps, which is an essential thing in my book. Alot of the stuff is good, but, as with most hip-hop, alot of it is too short and some is not overly good. My favourite song off it is 'Low Class Conspiracy'.- I'm a visionary - Only here to confirm my biases -Comment

The new FOTL album is quite different from the first - it lacks the immediacy of the first, but has a heap of added subtleties & nuances that mean it will probably be enjoyed better than the first after a certain number of repeated listens. It certainly is a grower & still sounds better & better with each spin.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

I think I still have Wagons shading it at this stage for my album of the year. Just.

Yeah agree on all counts, it straight away felt like there was more depth and longevity to it than Curses. The additions of some excellent backing vocals and more use of the synth are just two things that stand out. It's almost more pop but in a good way. I can see why some are disappointed that it's not as heavy but just listen to "Satan" a couple of times. That should do it keep em happy. "The Hope that House Built" keeps getting better for me too. No band uses anger and wordplay quite like FOTL.
The synth would normally be offputting, but is backed up by an aggressive rythym section so somehow works.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews
Not long ago, I bought the new CD from Yusuf (maybe better known as "Cat Stevens")... his second album since returning to making music... It's called Roadsinger... this album is a return to the acoustic guitar-based work he is most famous for... some good songs, both new and old... Yusuf's voice is unmistakable and his playing, understated and simple, yet entirely appropriate. Some standouts for mine, "Welcome Home, the title track "Roadsinger", "Thinkin' Bout You" (released as a single).
Yesterday picked up a DVD "Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood Live from Madison Square Garden". Being an avid Clapton fan, this was a must-buy for me! Features some terrific playing and singing from two musical greats. The show has songs from both artists' catalogues, and some terrific covers. Interesting to hear in an interview (included on DVD as extras) Winwood tell how he and Clapton chose each other's songs! Made for an interesting mix. Highlights for me were "Had To Cry Today", "Them Changes" , "Rambling On My Mind"...amongst many others! The band is made up of players Clapton has been using in recent gigs, with Willie Weeks on bass, Chris Stainton on keyboard, and Ian Thomas on drums. Our club was born in blood and boots, not in AFL focus groups.Comment

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews
Recently bought Todd Snider's "The Excitement Plan". The man who makes country and folk relevant again, he's both brilliantly touching and hilarious. Musically maybe not his strongest and probably doesn't match up to his last full length which was amazing, but has some definite highlights particularly "Money, Compliments, Publicity (Song Number Ten)". Also a great song called "America's Favourite Pastime" chronicling the story of Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Doc Ellis who in 1970 managed to throw a no-hitter while under the influence of LSD.
Check him out on Youtube, there's some great live footage which has some very funny stories, especially the story behind his song "If Tomorrow Never Comes".Park that car
