Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

Just a random find on Youtube, but there is this guy called Mike Masse who plays acoustic covers at some pizza place in Salt Lake City.

Absolute freak. Great guitar playing and an amazing voice. Good music taste too, with covers of Radiohead, U2, Rolling Stones and various other artists prominent. Spent half of last night going through them all.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

      Redd Volkaert - Reddhead
Collard, Greens and Gravy - Juke Joint Boogie
Michael Franti - The Sound of Sunshine

All very good albums to my ears, the first two inspired by meeting band members etc at the AIMS 2010 expo over the weekend. Which was awesome.

I bought A Thousand Sons by Linkin Park last week as I'm going to see them in December. It's an ok album, not that many stand out songs though. I also bought Minutes to Midnight from 2007, again, only a few good songs. I really hope they play lots of early stuff at the concert!!

Picked up Eric Clapton's album the other day... rather creatively titled "Clapton". His first studio release since 2005, it's a good album, with an interesting mix of old blues, jazz standards and a couple of originals. Features Doyle Bramhall II, Sheryl Crow, and great jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis - amongst others. Whilst he's certainly getting long in the tooth, EC still has 'it'. IMO his vocals are better than ever, and not only does he do some great fretwork, he lets his bandmates have their moment in the sun. Personal favourites for me are "My Very Good Friend The Milkman" (Fats Waller), and Hoagy Carmichael's "Rocking Chair"...

Bought a copy of Underworld's new album "Barking" today, which also features a bonus DVD with every song as a video clip.

Really getting into the cd, first single Scribble has a drum & bass, jungle feel to it, Always Loved A Film, Diamond Jigsaw, Bird 1 the stand out tracks, would love to see them live again, they kick serious butt on stage.

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

Apart from the Titus Andronicus album I gushed over earlier on, probably the 2 releases I've enjoyed most so far this year have been The Roots "How I Got Over" which is probably the most consistent album they've put out for a while and Los Campesinos "Romance Is Boring" which I've some to really enjoy despite being about 15 years too old for most of the subject matter. I had a love/hate thing going on mainly because it sometimes is a bit too clever and twee but it's made it's way into my good books.
I've also been going through a big Kinks revival. Man, Ray Davies is all kinds of awesome. Mainly rotating through Muswell Hillbillies and Arthur but there's a few holes in my collection to fill.

Bought Billy Thorpe's last album "Tangier".
Thorpe passed before he finished this album, so it was completed by his engineers and some friends ... Ian Moss, Mick Fleetwood et al.
Fantastic album ... One that you listen to from beginning to end with a bottle of bourbon (or other beverage of your choice).
Over the last couple of weeks I have heard this album compared to Led Zepplin 4 and Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon ... It ain't that good, but well worth the listen.

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

Instead of listening to the radio often or scouring the internet I tend to find a lot of music through friends, live settings and sometimes off forums. As a result I tend to catch on with different bands at different times to the norm. So for this reason I have just discovered the Arcade Fire.

I've listened to a few of their songs prior to this month, ("Wake Up", "No Cars Go", "Cold Wing" and a couple of others) and really liked them, and with my birthday falling within December and their new album receiving a lot of love I thought it would be a good present idea in lieu of any better ideas.

As a result I've had "The Suburbs" on high rotation this past week and it's brilliant. They have a really good sound, love how there isn't just one singer and like the feel of the record.

In particular I like the way they build up their songs and the tempo. "ready to Start", "Rococo" and "Sprawl II" are the highlights on the album, but other songs to really impress me are "Suburban War" (particularly it's second half, "Empty Room" and "Modern Man". I can already see many of these will feature in my votes for the Tiple J hottest 100.

Just wanted to commenet on the excellence of this album and keep this thread on the front page.

Anybody else as excited as I am to hear that Radiohead will be releasing their next album this weekend?

Completely out of the blue and I've already preordered / purchased it from www.kingoflimbs.com

Love these guys and it will be interesting to see what direction this album takes. Going off the cover it looks pretty dark so should be interesting. Hopefully they follow it up with a tour that actually includes Australia, although I wont be holding my breath.

I'm also very excited about The Strokes(the first single is awesome) and The Vines upcoming albums.

They won't get out here unless you can find them a plane that doesn't release CO2 and their set is made of biodegradable unicorn hair and costs nothing to build. I know firsthand how nuts they are about their 'carbon footprint'.

Anyway, I, too, am thoroughly looking forward to the release (probably more excited about the 'newspaper format' physical copy though) -- these guys don't make crap albums.

The Strokes waited five years to release the new album. The first single sounds very much like what they were doing five years ago.

And it's going to be worth the wait(if your a Strokes fan). This song could easily have fitted on any of their previous albums.
