Recent CDs bought & your reviews

(Review does allow for a single line entry)

Strange there was no thread here to discuss recent CD/album purchases, and was sparked into action by the JB Hifi sale of 20% off all CDs, and sparked into posting via cheap bulk order sangria (www.grays.com.au is magic).

Due to their dogged marketing I stumbled in and ended up with:

    - The Tame Impala EP
    - Augie March - Moo You Bloody Choir (some fancy 2 disc edition)
    - You Am I - best of* (The Cream & the Crock)
    - CW Stoneking - Jungle Blues (this guy is great but a total freak)
    - Hermano - ...into the exam room (some may know, the vocalist is John Garcia, ex-Kyuss
    so is demi-god)
    - Beaches - self titled, listening to it now and is brilliant. Not sure I'll get to the other CDs in full for a while as it is brilliant and warrants repeated listenings.
No really, it isn't just Meredith memories speaking, it is a damn fine piece of album.

    * Only bought as I bumped into Tim the week it came out. I was at a pub in Fitzroy, he was hanging out before a gig, I was pissed off as my (then) GF was 40 minutes late, and three women were shamelessly throwing themsleves at him. He was happily married with a 1 yo (at that moment anyway) and wanted nothing of it, so spend ages trying to coax me into conversation (by way of escape) by watching the early 80s GF reply on the TV. I was kind of being rude in retrospect, so the barman saw our predicament and put the best of CD on.
Tim (first name basis biatches!) proceeded to play air guitar to his own songs. Not just any air guitar either; that trademark sideways-bended-knees-bob-down sort of thing he does.
Was funny & self-absorbed on the surface, but he was so down to earth & earnest I gave him a smile & a nod. Jaysus, the dude has knocked out Missy Higgins twice, so I'm prepared to label him as a great bloke.

Go on, post your recent album purchases/opinions/reviews here.

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

Well at my age, i am going to bring up what i think are albums that will be around forever and a day and probably everyone over 40 has or had or knows someone who has them.
They are not new but will never be forgotten.

Hot August Night- Neil Diamond, this Album is probably the greatest orchestrated live recorded show.

Thriller - Micheal Jackson, okay he is a looney but this was pretty awesome and changed the way videos were made.

War of the Worlds-Jeff Wayne got together the best singers of the time and did a story on a martian invasion, sounds ridiculous but was brilliant.

Sargeant Pepper- The Beatles, another first of its kind, a band playing as another band and so high you couldnt go past "a day in the life"

Transformer - Lou Reed, the coolest album by one strange man.

A new world record- ELO thank god for that album during the dreaded disco years.

Would like to add anything ABBA did, as in those days kids and adults had a completely different view of good music until they came along.
As is still the case now, admit it we all like at least one ABBA song.
    Bring back the biff

I'll post some stuff about albums later but I just wanted to mention that for all the crap Tim Rogers gets for being a bastard from some people, on the 3 or 4 occasions I've met him he's been the sweetest, nicest guy you could imagine. One of my great moments in life was dancing backstage with Tim at the Falls while Iggy Pop played on the main stage in the background. He wears his heart on his sleeve and a more genuine guy you'd ever want to meet, however I'm sure if someone's rude to him he's more than capable of returning the favour.

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

Inspired by the Stax doco on SBS last week I bought Otis Redding - Live in London and Paris. It's Otis backed by Booker T & the MG's and the Mar-Keys on a Stax showcase tour of Europe in 67. Both shows have the same songs with the Paris one being a longer set and therefore 3 songs that don't appear in the London show. The Paris one's also probably a better recording but both are well worth listening too despite the content being the same. It's Otis at his peak, "I've Been Loving You Too Long" almost has me in tears every time, "Fa Fa Fa Fa" is a great great song and "Respect", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Shake" just ooze energy. Both shows end with screaming renditions of "Try A Little Tenderness". Well worth the purchase. Now to hit up some Sam and Dave.

That would have been a helluva lotta fun at Falls, the sort of experience you could never forget. I 've heard the rumours as well, but pretty much dismissed them out of hand. As you mentioned at the end, he probably gets into trouble for replying to rude people - he probably just treats people the way he gets treated and will occasionally get a bad rep from some dingbat trying to make a hero of himself.

Recently bought a couple of new ones:

Future of the Left - Last Night I Saved Her From Vampires: A live album of mostly songs from their only studio album, with no great production values, this is strictly one for the fans, of which I am unashamedly one.
A sad reminder of what we missed when they cancelled their show a few weeks ago, it's worth buying for the 4 previously unrecorded songs, all of which are well worth it especially "Distant Jabs At A Soul" and "Cloak The Dagger" as well as the excellent banter. A misunderstood heckler gets flayed alive and told "Yes but you're wearing a Tool t-shirt so you're opinions are invalid" and commended "for having the balls to like such lacklustre music". In a just and fair world this band would be bigger than Bono's sense of self importance, but this is not that world.

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion: Densely layered pop music that's a distant offshoot of Brian Wilson and the Flaming Lips with some hints of Afrobeat (or whatever the kids say these days when they're ripping off African rhythms). This is a really brilliant album, plenty there to keep the interest if only for the melodies buried below.

Haven't bought a CD in 10 years -- hello iTunes.

              Recent albums:
Radiohead - In Rainbows: I don't even know what to call it. Brilliant, I suppose.
Herbert - Scale: Not a new album but I've just been listening to it. Good, shallow, sexy.

I still prefer having something tactile, reading the liner notes, checking out the lyrics, but I'm kind of old school like that.

                    C.W Stoneking: Jungle Blues
As much as a concept album as anything else floating around these days, CW is undoubtedly one of our finest lyricists judging by this effort, and his voice really does approach that of the finer early twentieth centry bluesmen. His old-school storybook blues style does lend itself to some masterful imagination being brought to life by his subtle and often humerous adventures in the Northern Jungles of ye olde wild Africa. Lowlight of the album is the only cover; Brave Son of America, strangely placed on the album ahead of live favourite Cabbage Green, and sounding like an out of place WWII propaganda attempt, out of sync with the rest of the album. Highlights include the wild lament of Talkin Lion Blues, the stragely upbeat tale of damnation The Love Me or Die, and the largely announced (in lieu of sung) album, closer The Greatest Liar. All in all, better than expected and currently gleaning some high rotation at Mofra Central.

I know what you mean. I'm like that with books -- can't quite get used to Kindle.

Ironically, been involved with quite a bit of CD cover design -- check out some of Postal Service's kozyndan designed covers -- did a lot of photoreferencing for the art. The magic of the internet -- can work with people around the world as long as I have my laptop and a camera with me...

Grabbed "Illinois" by Sufjan Stevens the other day at JB, and as immasculating as it is to admit it, the album is simply brilliant. Some of the songs are truely haunting, as his simplistic approach of limited electrical instruments gives off a sliglty eeiry vibe. The outstanding songs are John Wayne Gacy Jr. (yeah the John Wayne Gacy Jr.) and Jacksonville.

I bought Bruce Springsteen's latest CD called "Working on a Dream", also featuring the E Street Band with Clarence Clemmon's efforts on the saxophone were absolutely amazing.

The CD is a mixture of pop, rock, some ballads and a folk song and also the musical theme of the Movie "The Wrestler" that Bruce wrote, very catchy tunes as per previous Springsteen material. Also a 20 min DVD is included and shows the BOSS rehearsing his tracks.

Don't mind the Boss's latest track, might have to have a listen, he also rocked the Superbowl, very good performance.

Yes, his performance was awesome at the Superbowl...When he was out out here in 2003 on The Rising tour I managed to get seats about three rows back from the front...and to see the BOSS slide accross the entire stage on his knees whilst singing blew me away. He really gets the crowd involved. I also admire that he never brings on support acts as he says that people come to see him and that is what they get...it was a 3 hr 10 min concert with a ten minute break. Rumours are about that he may tour again later this year...fingers crossed!

Anyway, it is seriously a great DVD...let me know what you think of it, that is if you get a chance to listen to it.
