I think you will find CD sales will continue to decrease and vinyl sales continue to increase.

Redeye records based out of Sydney is great for online purchases also.
Whilst I agree with most of what you said, the one down side to vinyl is actually playing the tracks you want, if you don't play a whole album and forget about a continuous play list. It is easy to scratch the vinyl and you need to make sure you have a quality turntable and your needle is kept pristine. I still have my old collection from the 70's and 80's and now my daughter is enjoying some of the albums and has her own vinyl collection.

The beauty of vinyl for me is playing it from start to finish, to listen to a record to how it should be listened to and not on some shuffle playlist, my iPod can do that job.

Just received my copy of Joy Divisions Unknown Pleasures on 180gm grey/blue marbled vinyl, looks superb, sounds sublime.

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

Looking forward to the new Jack White release Lazaretto, apart from what should be a decent sounding record, Jack is certainly known for his love for vinyl and his owning of his own record store and label, this upcoming release features quite a bit of trickery and technology.

It will include on the vinyl itself, 2 locked grooves with one actually at the start or outside edge of the record, one side in which it starts at the end and plays in reverse, a hidden groove both sides on the actual label however one will have to be played on 45rpm whilst the other sides hidden track on 78. The main recording of the record itself the usual 33/3.

One side glossy the other a matt finish and will also feature a hologram on the vinyl of an angel, it all sounds pretty cool but I'm sure will sound just as cool.

Been listening to the new Black Keys release Turn Blue produced again by Danger Mouse, has some El Camino sounding beats but also some rawer moments and big guitar solos, especially on track one Weight Of Love which is a ripper, all in all its typical Black Keys but finishes with a very dad rock styled track blending some CCR, Warren Zevon and Led Zeppelin, really enjoying this record.

Bought a fair bit of vinyl recently including the new Hold Steady record in yellow vinyl and the first Afghan Whigs record in 14 years on white vinyl. Both are solid efforts. Especially happy that the Whigs album extends the legacy of one of all time favourite bands rather than diminishing it. It's a step away from their old sound but also a logical one.
Enjoying the reissue of Courtney Barnett's two EP's as a double LP. She's really great.
Also got Yo La Tengo's "Fade" which is a year or two old by now, the new Sharon Jones and really loving Angel Olsen's "Burn Your Fire For No Witness".

Great pick; White Fire is the most hauntingly beautiful song I've heard. Plus she's a babe which is sick.

The Hard Ons are doing a 4-edition split with The Melvins, The Necks and two other bands I can't remember (one of them is from Japan so they have to be good); will be getting ALL of that.

                      Great find.

So does anyone know how you actually tell if a record is an original press or not?

The best in 50 year old technology. A recently refurbished Kriesler Radiogram. It's certainly not super high end sound but it's got a pretty nice sound for what it is. On the upside I can play 78's which I have a bunch of I inherited from my grandparent's. It will also play at 16 rpm apparently.

Have been giving the new Jack White record Lazaretto a bit of a listen, an extremely interesting record featuring all kinds of instruments used, this release covers many genres including rock, folk, country, blues, obvious influences are the likes of Chuck Berry and No Diddly, with a little bit of the Stones for good measure, especially on the track Just One Drink.

Also found a copy of a 1974 record from a Detroit garage rock band called Death, the album For the Whole World To See, I believe it was recorded back then but released only a few years ago, main track is titled Politicians In My Mind.

Haven't bought it yet (it's released next Tuesday) but am currently listening to Spoon's new album 'They Want My Soul' on iTunes first play. What I have heard so far, it is pretty much what you expect from a Spoon album - minimalist song structures that reveal something new with each passing listen. As with all their previous albums, songs sound wildly divergent from one to the next but they all still manage to sound like Spoon - it is a genius trick that not many bands can pull off.

Re: Recent CDs bought & your reviews

I got a little care package of vinyl the other day and super impressed with all three efforts:

Spoon - They Want My Soul As Sedat said, it's a Spoon record. They sound like themselves while still managing to throw a fair bit of eclecticism into the mix. Still based on minimalist R&B and Pop but incorporating at times the current trend of synth based indie pop while keeping their sound. They also rock a big riff on the opener "Rent I Pay" supposedly a homage to AC/DC.

Lazy musical reference points: Probably some other bands but they sound like Spoon, man.

I'll split this up into 3 posts so I can add a vid for each

Protomartyr - Under Color of Official Right This is one I listened to on Spotify and kind of liked enough to buy it, but listening to it with a fuller sound has brought it to life. Detroit band with a super early 80's English sound, great lyrics with a quite monotone vocal delivery, most of it hangs of the rhythm. The bass and drums drive it and the guitar leaves and fills the space as it feels, set back in the mix, important but not dominating. Reminds me of Gang of Four in that way. Dig the tracks 'Ain't That Simple', 'Scum, Rise' and 'Pagans' but pretty strong all the way through.

Lazy musical reference points: Gang of Four, Joy Division, Wire
