It was just dumb football hey. Know your limitations and just hoof it.
Smart ass keepers who think they are Iniesta or Baggio have been a feature of this tournament. I'm a big Mat Ryan fan but that was totally unnecessary. Also the Messi goal we didn't close him down quick enough, like the Argies defenders did when Behich made that fantastic run. Only other minor gripe was we were slightly late with the subs, and unfortunately they scored the 2nd just before we were about to ring the changes.
It has been an incredible performance by the Socceroos based on our limited talent. To score in all 4 matches and win 2 is way beyond our pay scale. And we gave the Argies plenty to think about.
Couple of big errors from Behich and Ryan but that's all that's needed. I was impressed by our will to push, and I thought after the first 20 minutes we actually started to look comfortable on the ball. We started making good runs and gave them more than a couple of frights.
The last 10 minutes were fantastic too. Behich's run, Goodwin's involvement, Kuols chance among others.
Put some respect on our name!
I only hope this drives us further to improve our development programs and make the game more accessible and affordable. That didn't happen after 2006. It needs to happen now so that this game can continue to grow.
There's no reason why football/soccer shouldn't become the #2 sport in the country. For a start, we need some positivity around our own A League which is actually a solid standard. I think it takes a shift in mindset and perspective for all - instead of criticising, be part of the solution and evolvement of the game here.
Yeah i jumped off the coach as i thought he got it past the keeper. So close.
Poor Bevo.

It was a tremendous campaign overall that did not deserve the tragic ending that ensued. Matt Ryan had done everything right up to that point.
It's a beautiful game and a brutally cruel game at the same time. The difference between victory and defeat is often measured in millimetres os space and nanoseconds of time. We were deprived of a last minute equaliser but an arm thrust desperately at a strike by an 18 yr old teenager and thus we go home. Defeated but not disgraced by any means.

"It's not about the destination - it's about the trip."
France and England made light work of their opponents this morning. The better teams are flexing their muscles at the business end, which makes our performance against Argentina all the more laudable - we have been by far the best of the losing R16 teams so far.
The 2 already confirmed QF's are mouth-watering fixtures - Netherlands v Argentina and France v England. Let's see what the remaining R16 games dish up for the final 2 QF's. It is already shaping as a wonderful tournament.

It really does add credit to our performance. Argentina spoke pretty highly of us, including Messi.
Still disappointed about yesterday's result for the Socceroos. Yes, they are more talented. Yes, on general play they deserved to win. But ... we had every chance to send that game into OT or even steal it.
We matched then for the first 35 minutes. They hardly created anything. They didn't look dangerous. We put closed their space and we put a lot of pressure on the ball. They hardly penetrated. The goal changed everything and it was due to us making a number of mistakes. Mistake #1. Behich should never ever given away that foul for the free kick that set up the entire play. It was stupid. He was fired up after a push and shove encounter with Messi. The player had his back to goal and was not in a threatening position. No need to push him like that. Mistake #2. When Messi started dribbling at players in the box, they all peeled off to take the space in front of him away, but no one stepped forward to close him down or put pressure on the shot. We had like four to five players between Messi and the goal, we could have afforded someone to aggressively put pressure on the ball. You just can't give a player with as much talent as Messi that much time on the ball on his left foot inside the box. The ball then just found its way past every limb in the box and Matty Ryan really could not do anything as the ball would have been hard to sight early with all those players in the way.
Goal down. Game changes. They are more confident. The pressure valve is released. They play more relaxed and it is now us who have to chase the game. The second goal was a calamity on so many levels. The first throw from Ryan put the player under pressure. He then passes it back. Then that player passes it back to Ryan. Ryan should have just put his foot through it and cleared it. He was being closed down by not one, but two Argentinian players. He tries a delicate touch that is just terrible and it is game over for him. He did say in the interview post game that the instruction was to take risks to play out from the back. You could tell he wasn't overtly confident with that strategy, but you do need to know when the risk isn't worth the reward in the moment. That was a disaster. Unforgiveable. Basically game over from that point. I was calling for his citizenship to be revoked at that point but had calmed down by the next day to understand that these things can happen (a little like me screaming that Todd Curley should never ever be allowed to put a red, white and blue jumper on again while travelling home on the train after the 1997 prelim final).
However, some great attacking moves from Arnold meant we were not going to die wondering. We threw caution to the wind and attacked at all costs creating a few beautiful moments and it was great to see Goodwin' strike take a massive deflection and hit the back of the net.
1-2. Game on. We go even more attacking. Argentina had multiple chances to kill us off, but we survived due to a combination of luck, their inability to execute and some good defending.
The two big chances. The mazy Behich run. Wowee, if he got that shot off cleanly that would have been goal of the tournament. Then the last minute chance from Garang went ohhh so close. Just a cm here or there and that was in the back of the net. The goal keeper didn't know much about it but did well to close the angle and make himself big and was lucky enough to catch his arm. If that goal went in, Australia would have self combusted and I don't know how I would have survived the nerves of extra time or imagine a pen shoot out.
So proud to be Australian watching that performance. So proud of the boys. They were well organised, stuck to a good plan, executed brilliantly except for a few brain fades and took it right up to one of the best teams in the world. It really did take a bit a magic moment from a generational talent to get Argentina across the line.
