FORMER Western Bulldogs and Carlton forward Billy Gowers has attracted interest from Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) franchises in India, but the 28-year-old is committed to chasing a new career as a punter in America.

Gowers is understood to have impressed recruiters from the second-most watched sport in the most populated country in the world, after an eye-catching display against PKL stars at John Cain Arena on December 28.

The Aussie Raiders were captained by Sydney great Josh Kennedy and included modern day greats Marc Murphy, Brett Deledio, Dan Hannebery and Dyson Heppell, plus premiership players Liam Shiels and Michael Hibberd, but it was Gowers who stole the show.

Gowers played 33 games for the Bulldogs across three seasons at the Whitten Oval before being delisted at the end of 2020, after spending two seasons on the rookie list at Princes Park.

Since then, the Victorian has spent three of the past four seasons in the VFL, starting with two years at Southport before moving home and playing for Port Melbourne in 2024, where he won the ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal as the leading goalkicker in the competition with 50 goals.

But after contemplating his sporting future late last year, Gowers joined ProKick Australia in a bid to become the next Australian to punt in the National Football League.

I saw Billy practising some punts with his dad down at point lonsdale over summer. He wasn't very consistent, but when he got on to one it soared. Good luck to him!

Fancy Geelong mistreating Baz like that and not playing him exclusively in the midfield!

King said boom recruit Bailey Smith – currently the second most popular player in the game – is set to play a variety of midfield and forward roles in his first season at the Cats.

Smith racked up plenty of the footy in Friday’s match simulation and has upped his training in the New Year off the back of his knee reconstruction and a minor hamstring injury.

“’Baz’ has been going well. I mean we probably had to hold Baz back a bit but he’s come in, high intensity, he’s done a lot,” King said.

“He’s probably been unrestricted since Christmas, so he’s been finding a lot of the footy and just getting his head around playing different roles for us in a different system. But, he’s going to be great for what he can do for us as a club.

“I think Bailey is someone who is unique where he can play inside and outside. So for us, I think we’ll just tap into that. I think you’ll see him play inside, bit of wing, bit of forward, try and just spin the numbers through the middle of the ground a little bit.

“But certainly he’ll be helping us transition the footy up down the ground.”

I'm sure Matthew Lloyd will come out and give a hard hitting intelligent retort to this news considering his drive by on Bevo.

"I think they've just lost far too many players high quality players. To lose three star players, All-Australians, and every single one of them is being played out of position. Bailey Smith played out of position. Caleb Daniel is in and out of the team, played out of position and Jack Macrae is in and out of the team, out of position," Lloyd said on 3AW Radio.
"They all want to go and play and be settled down on their spot. That's the criticism I have of the Western Bulldogs"

Point Cook Football Club tears up contract with Josh Hill after allegations of child sexual offences

An ex-AFL star charged with historic child sexual offences has had his contract to play local footy in Melbourne torn up.

Former AFL forward Josh Hill has had his contract club torn up by his local club after he was charged with alleged child sex offences.

Hill, who recently changed his surname to Carter, had signed with Point Cook in the Western Football Netball League and over the weekend was charged over the alleged incidents.

The West Australian reported the 36-year-old has been charged with four counts of sexually penetrating a child over 13 and under 16 and he appeared in court on Saturday.

On Monday morning, Point Cook confirmed it had parted ways with the former Western Bulldog and West Coast player.

“The Point Cook Football Club’s Executive were yesterday made aware of developments and met this morning in relation to senior men’s player Josh Hill; including that he has been charged by Western Australian Police with offences that are now before the courts,” a club statement said.

“This is a very serious matter and it is being treated as such by the club.

“Josh Hill has been stood down as a senior player and we have rescinded his playing contract and his transfer from his previous club has been cancelled.

“The club acknowledges the importance of the presumption of innocence in this case and also the need to treat all parties with respect and understanding.

“It is now important that the legal process be allowed to run its course and as such the club cannot and will not make any further comment in relation to these charges while the matter is under police investigation and before the courts.”

Point Cook had announced the signing of Hill last month but the social media post has now been removed.

Hill played 173 games in his AFL career after being drafted by the Dogs with the 61st pick in the 2006 national draft.

He was traded to the Eagles at the end of the 2011 season and went onto play 106 games for the club including the 2015 grand final loss against Hawthorn.

Ex-AFL player faces court for alleged sex offences against a child

Former AFL player Josh Hill has reportedly been charged with child sex offences allegedly committed in WA.

Hill, who has recently gone by the surname Carter, is charged with four counts of sexually penetrating a child over 13 and under 16, The West Australian reports.

Three offences are alleged to have occurred in Broome in December 2015, with another alleged offence in Perth in January 2016.

The 36-year-old former Western Bulldogs and West Coast player appeared in Northbridge Court on Saturday, it has been reported.

He was not required to plead, and was reportedly given a number of orders including surrendering his passport to a Victorian Court, forfeiting his working with children card and prohibited from having any contact with a list of people named, but Hill is permitted to take his children to daycare.

Details of the alleged offences were not read out.

The matter has reportedly been adjourned until April 14, when it will be heard in Broome.

Hill's negotiated bail conditions were reportedly a topic of the matter in court on Sunday.

Last month, the former grand finalist signed with a local Melbourne football club for 2025.

He played 173 AFL games and kicked 226 goals across 11 seasons.
