Maybe everything happens late because it takes a week to do all the discussions and by then you're up to the deadline and just need to make it happen. Maybe extra time allows more complicated deals (like us theoretically collecting top 10 picks to use on Butters).

Also allows extra time to convince players to come across/condider a life changing decision. Say Butters deal is a possibility, and Port declare Freijah is the guy they need to make it happen, it'd be tough for him to go from holiday mode to having to make a decision like that within a few days (and discussing with his gf, meet with Port, suss out Adelaide etc) because we have arbitrarily decided it only needs to be a week.
Do you work for croc media?

I think the unofficial trade period started a couple of weeks ago - they have plenty of time to meet and plan deals. The big deals will never get done until the last day for cOnTeNt.

Can see the argument for increasing unplanned player movement though.

I’d rather just stick with buss, Lobb, Gardner and JOD. Don’t need anymore KPD duds in the list
I will never see #16 the same!!

I’m very much in agreement with this, Gardner is the best at the role we’re looking for in the VFL, based on that, he’s basically better than any fringe key back on an Eastern state side AFL list.

Butts was the one to target, but that’s clearly a dead end.

Adelaide took a call regarding Clayton Oliver, did its due diligence, but have decided to not pursue the midfielder. GWS and Collingwood the main clubs looking at him closely.

It would be amusing if Melbourne got stuck with May, Oliver and Petracca.

That'll teach em for throwing around insane contracts.

              Now let's get Butters on 1.7 x 8

Trust me if it killed the "chatter" I'd be down for a one day trade period, but that ship has sailed. Most other leagues in the world don't confine all the moves happening just 1 week, I just don't see the need to arbitrarily rush stuff. That Treloar deal for instance nearly didn't happen because of a dumb 7pm deadline, and how many deals for lesser players get held up by the big deals? Why should Buku have to wait to the last hour (and maybe miss out) because we are too busy haggling over picks in the Butters deal.

The whole point is to allow players and clubs to change their lists, how does making the period unnecessarily short help that?
I should leave it alone but you're not right

I agree with a longer trade period, or ‘player movement period’ I mean we’re at the stage now where discussions start earlier in the year, ramp up as soon as the season starts but I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t just be open from post grand final to draft, or even day 1 preseason. Teams might pick up ie a kid in the draft then decide they are open to moving someone they previously weren’t etc.

I think actually extending it from the 9 days means trades will just naturally fall as they do, no need to save them until the last day when that’s months away. Stop making it this event and just leave it as a long, open period for clubs to navigate as they see fit.

youll gradually get more and more trades ramping up post season then ramping down again, it’ll be in the news the whole time but no real “final day” where people are waiting to artificially announce deals.

I asked Ralphy a couple of questions

Are there any other players the Dogs are considering?
                      Jon Ralph6 minutes ago

Connor Budarick is a really nice half back who kicks it well, has some tricks and just got forced out of the Suns backline because they have so many options there. So the challenge for the Dogs is bringing in players who actually won’t feature in their best team. They will need another key back but the Crows aren’t interested in releasing Jordan Butts and now that they aren’t in the race for Christian Petracca they probably don’t need the draft capital he might have required. So it’s a boring answer and the Dogs fans will feel slighted that Jamarra is going to leave for basically nothing. But they are only scratching around at the edges right now. That could change in the next week.

Are the discussions of a deal with Zak Butters been completely squashed or is the door slightly ajar?
                      Jon Ralph20 minutes ago

There is so much double speak and sometimes outright lying in the trade period but I believe Port Adelaide when they say that Butters is staying for 2026. Their view is that they have to give Josh Carr a season to win him over even though he was a big Kenny Hinkley guy and even though he probably wants to come back to Victoria next year. It does mean it will be another year of distractions at Port Adelaide next year after the Kenny circus this year. But as list boss Jason Cripps said yesterday he is a loyal player and he is a winner. You can make the case that with a midfield of Butters, Horne-Francis, Rozee and Marshall and with a fit forward line that includes Lukosius and Marshall they will make a push for the eight. It probably doesn’t keep him anyway, but even if he leaves next year it gives the Power a chance to trade into a much better draft than the 2025 version and they get another full year out of Butters. It does make sense.

I imagine GVGR smiling as he listens to these answers, having his finger on the pulse on what is actually on the radar, including intimate knowledge of some of the players that have exited the side door.

Ralphy missed the opportunity to ask you questions!

Flanders to the saints for pick 7.

Lyon is repeating his historic pattern of sacrificing the future for the now. A top 10 pick for a fringe guy is overs even in this draft and even if it gets pushed back.

But credit where it's due. They threw the $$$ at him and followed through at the trade table.

They really are pushing all the chips to the middle of the table- but they have got the longest premiership drought and were middling, so if I was a Saints supporter I would be ecstatic (for now). It could get ugly in 5 years.

Edit: What I will say is this- the rhetoric has suddenly changed and on the back of this they are suddenly a "destination" club. The uptick to their brand has been huge.
This is what landing Butters does for us. We have the list. We are in the window. We have the facilities. We need players falling over themselves to get to us for now and the future.

It feels like an all or nothing fork in the road period for the saints. Either they start contending or they disappear into North Melbourne oblivion for a decade. It really will be a fascinating watch and could set a precedent on how to or not to manage a list.

Yep, totally agree. I don't really get how they are claiming they still have heaps of cash to splash around next year. That must mean plenty of players are on unders and I am sure they pricked their ears up at that. How they manage this alone will be interesting.
