It's no biggie to not get the player (who is an ordinary 1-on-1 defender), but it is very bad faith business by St Kilda to pursue an opposition player, get them to publicly commit and suddenly drop out leaving that player and his manager in the lurch. This is not the same as Dunkley (or maybe Merrett this year) - these two examples are a club offering something for their target but the existing club not accepting it. By contrast St Kilda have just arseholed Aleer altogether.

We need to keep getting stuck into St Kilda's overperforming and underpaid players and show them exactly what the club thinks of goodwill negotiations. I'd start with Max Hall.
Apparently and probably the main reason the Saints want to move Jack Steele on is that his 5 year contract he signed 4 years ago still has a year left but was heavily back ended at the time meaning he'll be on over 1 Mill next season, crazy! That along with us making them cough up on Wilkies contract would have hit them for 6, Gubby is looking more like Grubby Allen at this stage especially given their excuse of not being able to get a deal done, on Thursday with 6 days of negotiating? Yeah right! A Bullshit backflip on a player promised to be signed with a bullshit excuse, i really hope Jack Steele stays at the Saints, plus that's even shit trying to get rid of your captain. What a club.

No to Aleer, absolutely not what we need and a disaster when ball hits the deck, which is still our biggest problem by far back there IMO. I can handle a few marks inside 50 out the back when our system breaks down, I can’t handle another year of us being literally unable to win/mop up a ground level contest that our talls have brought to ground.

Budarick & Sellwood in the 22 round 1 should help here.

Geelong offer their next 3 first round picks (25,26,27) for Charlie Curnow.

Given Geelong never go down they are all likely to be late teens/early twentys picks. Is it enough?

Leeks manager has come out and absolutely slammed the saints.

Not a good look at all for them and damaging for future acquisitions they've been bragging about all off-season.

I wouldn't have thought so. They should be offering a top 10 pick this year. and topping up after that.
I know they've typically been reluctant to include or trade players but they might have to consider it.

Saints have really shown a dark side of their power plays this year. Their fans won't care but it's a poor performance by their list management.

Especially if it's been two years. That's very poor form

I noticed Leeks manager has a very small portfolio. Would the saints have pulled the same move with a bigger name player manager?

How do they get Marshall over there?

If I was carlton I would not be trading Curnow

No way near enough IMO, it’s essentially 3x picks in the 20s, maybe even late 20s/early 30s this year and 2027 (Tassie)

I don't think it matters to be honest as the managers will all be looking at it and that level of trust with the Saints is just gone

The heat is on St Kilda to explain their decision to backtrack on a big-money contract offer to GWS defender Leek Aleer four weeks after he requested a trade to the club.

Aleer, 24, was all set to take up a four-year deal with the Saints as they splashed the cash in a busy AFL trade period headlined by the recruitment of Carlton free agent Tom De Koning.

But on the day St Kilda added West Coast premiership player Liam Ryan, having also signed Blues father-son Jack Silvagni and Gold Coast midfielder Sam Flanders, news emerged they had pulled out of talks to secure Aleer.

Aleer is said to be shattered and now faces an uncertain future, though other Victorian clubs could still come calling and the Giants are believed to have an offer still on the table.

“This is a real head-scratcher,” 7NEWS Melbourne’s Mitch Cleary said.

“The Saints made assurances to Leek Aleer he would be their fifth off-season target but today blindsided him while he was on holidays in Barcelona, telling the shattered 24-year-old they’re out despite Aleer being out of contract and having the pre-season draft at their disposal.” Leek Aleer requested a trade to St Kilda four weeks ago. Any deal Aleer will get is unlikely to be as sweet as what the Saints proposed.

GWS have already signed Jayden Laverde from Essendon, ensuring Aleer is no guarantee to find the regular game time he wants if he stays, while Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver is set to take up another list spot.
“The Saints have to speak on this,” former Adelaide and Geelong forward Josh Jenkins said on Trade Radio.
“They can’t sit back and say ‘it was only speculation that we were interested and we weren’t fully across the line and we had a look at Leek and didn’t commit’.
“They have to get in front of this because we’ve already heard from them at different stages, we know they have been a long way down the line on this.

“Instead of using a second-round pick to get the deal done for Leek Aleer they’ve included it in the Liam Ryan deal.”
St Kilda have been aggressively chasing rival players for years and their approach has finally paid off this month on the back of Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s decision to stick around.

This move, though, could now leave a mark.
“St Kilda will pay a price for this, make no mistake about it,” Jenkins added.
“Managers will sit back and take notice of this, and this is why this doesn’t happen.

“For all the times we might’ve sat here and said ‘oh would you walk that deal back?’ It’s easy for us to say it, it’s next to impossible for clubs to do it because you run the risk of every player agent sitting back and saying ‘you know what, I don’t know if I’d be doing a deal with St Kilda because you know what, it’s not a guarantee’.”
Collingwood and the Bulldogs both chased Silvagni and could now theoretically sense an opportunity, with ex-Crows coach Brenton Sanderson saying the latter would be a “great fit” for Aleer.

Aleer supposedly in Europe too which would make it extra hard to find another club

I wonder what our team are thinking when it comes to KPD, we seem happy with what we've got but why not bring in someone who fits either one of these options-

Young recent draftee with future limited opportunity. - Give them the confidence and development opportunity to make a career. They're stuck behind too many players IMO-
Luke Lloyd - Brissy player and from Sandy Dragons with limited opportunity with the premiers. Pick 42 from 2023 draft which has shown it can produce talent from deep.
Noah Mraz - Hawthorn KPD drafted in 2024 with pick 35. With Barrass and Battle coming in, there's not much room for younger KPD to develop. Take a punt on a kid drafted within the last few years and give them the belief they could break into this side.

Or Bring in an experience body who's isn't getting a game but has plenty of backline and AFL experience -
Tom Doedee - Retrictied free from Adel and didn't play much this year, is 28 and is from the Geelong so come home factor an option? We didn't pick him up when he owas a free agent but he's not going to get an opportunity. Worth a look?
Jake Kolodjashnij - Zero games in 2025, Geelong's back is deep with KPD (Stewart, OSullivian, De Koning, Henry) does he play ahead of any of them next season. He's 30, could be good experience for the younger pups.
