Port are desperate to get deeper in this draft.
Gaining pick 6 might mean they look to package 6 & their pick 10, and work something with GCS.

I suspect Port would’ve loved the flexibility to push Chad to GCS to help pry the SUNS 2 & 3 picks.

Our Pick 7 might be needed by Port to make this work

Depends who Port wants - Luko, Rankine or Rozee?

No guarantee that any of the 3 are still on the board at Pick 6, although you would think one of Rankine/Rozee would be. If Port had Pick 6 and Pick 7 it makes sense for them to target GC's pick(s) but they would want something else coming back.

I'm not convinced Port even need our Pick 7 to trade up further anyway.

They could do Pick 6 + Pick 10 for Pick 2 or 3 and maybe get a second rounder back.

I don't see them needing our Pick 7.

Although - if they let May go and get a Top 10 pick, they could see themselves with Pick 6, 7, 10 & whatever they get for May.

GC could be after the twins to replace their bookends. They are not top 5, but somewhere between 6 and 10

I’d heard this earlier in the year. Tredrea even restated it on 9 news in response to 7 apparently claiming Port had to get rid of Polec/Pittard due to cap pressure. I certainly wouldn’t take Rucci’s word for it, but Tredrea still has strong ties to Port and I would liken his reporting on them to be a bit like Mark Stevens with us.

I would add that clearing more space would likely also be to front end a bunch of contracts so they don’t run into cap issues that any potential bumper crop might cause in the near future.

It doesn’t let me add photos, but Tredrea also tweeted:
“Contrary to some reporting, @pafc has 2nd lowest salary cap payments in 2018. Trades today done to protect cap underspend, improve 2018 draft position and position for future 2019 f/son selections.”

So saying what the club wants to be heard

Would clubs even be aware of their cap space relative to other teams? Does Port know our salary cap spending?

I don't believe this to be an established fact. A I believe Rucci reported it and was quite possible talking out his ass. I'm on the Ledge side of journalism in this case.

I don't think you are ever going to get 100% established fact when it comes to wages and salary caps but this has been pretty widely reported. For example in the Age early this year:

Despite an aggressive post-season recruiting campaign in which they landed three players, Port Adelaide’s salary cap position in 2018 has the club positioned to snare another significant player.

The Power are understood to be among the top four clubs in the AFL for space in the salary cap, based on the AFL estimates for 2018 player payments – a remarkable outcome given they have acquired free agents Tom Rockliff and Steven Motlop and traded for Jack Watts, while adding a further three seasoned recruits.
