Re: ASADA issues show-cause notices to Essendon players

There's teasing and trying to get in an opposition players head. There's discrimination based upon nasty words and actions based on attributes of a protected nature. Seems pretty simple and overreaching political correctness on this by media needs to stop. The next time someone is called a choker or weak then what? I have more problems with Hirds comments on the back page talking about 'hate'. This is all nonsense, if not a slightly amusing nonsense.

So disappointed that Mitchell backed away from his comments. That we live in a society that demands that sort of response, however empty, is one of my real gripes in life. Gramsci would look at it as an example of cultural hegemony.

Not a good look when kids are watching the game.

Try not to take this as a personal attack BAD, my response is rooted in an ongoing frustration with that line of thinking and the marketing guru favourite "family friendly," grounds for stifling freedom of expression.

Won't somebody please think of the children! Moral panic. It doesn't actually do them, or us any good.

A bit deeper analysis of things would highlight to me that the genesis of that type of thinking isn't actually formed from any sense of responsibility for the souls of our youth but is tied up in much more economic rationale. That we in Australia just accept it on face value is a real problem.

We are a very disempowered and homogenous society. When a bloke on a footy field can't engage in banter with is opponents who are alleged drug cheats by making an injecting gesture at them without it being cast as a threat to the souls of the children and existence of the game (see Ch 7 Sam Lane etc last night) then I have real issues with the status quo. Call it unsportsmanlike, explain to your kids that this isn't the behaviour of someone you would hold in high regard, but lets not try and impose on his personal freedoms to express that view.

The whole discussion on Ch 7 last night was farcical, a pantomime. They just trotted out the expected lines re: not a good look, don't want to see that etc without any real belief in their message, but rather to satiate the impending moral panic if anyone dared to indulge a different view.

My kids thought it was pretty funny. They've been aware of the Essendon drug psaga for some time now.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

You should win a prize for being the first poster to mention Gramsci but my undying admiration will have to suffice.

I wonder who at AFL headquarters wrote the script for the Sam Mitchell apology? They did a good job. Hit all the expected notes.

There was nothing wrong with it. It was a bad look for the AFL because it brought up something they'd rather everyone forget. If the kid is old enough to know what Mitchell was doing then like Twodogs kids they'll probably think it's funny because it's a good unexpected sledge. If the kid doesn't know what Mitchell it doing then obviously he'll grow up to be a heroine addict. That's was the concern wasn0't it?

If Hawthorn had woof awards like ours Sam would get my vote. Something about calling a spade a syringe.

Pretty shitty response from Essendon, when all they had to do in reply was to run the back if their hand under their nose.

Haha! I have been known to draw the longest of bows when discussing the game and our engagement with it. Aussie Rules and being a fan is a great phenomenon with which to consider power, conformity and control. From its social mores to stadium design. I wish there were more books addressing it.

Guilty people don't respond - they walk away with their tail between their legs, a bit like what Hibbard did when Mitchell taunted him.

Tim Lane on the broader corruption from parties involved with the scandal.

                          TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

Some interesting commentary coming out now re: Essendon's response to Brisbanes use of IV drips to aid in hydration in 2001. They really hammed it up and participated in the stigma associated with needle use by having black arm bands tied around their forearms. Hird leading the fray.

A lot can change in 10+ years.
