Given we get a 20% discount on the points, I suppose if we rated him at 12 and a bid came at 10 we’d be paying what we considered fair market value. I just can’t see him being a top 10 pick at this stage and think we will be quite comfortable selecting him in that 15-20 range.

    Interesting question.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

There would have to be a limit I suspect. He's a quality player and has a strong link to the club but a top 10 pick might be a step to far for us. It shouldn't come to that though

I don't agree with this totally. Whilst there shouldn't be free passage, I like the idea of family continuing with the same club. I don't like the way the rules are now, and would prefer if it was a little easier for clubs to nab a father/son. I think a first rounder should be off the table and you should have to use your next best draft pick (usually 2nd rounder).

I think the rules are reasonable at the moment. Extreme example, but If you'd just won the premiership and the best 18 year old in the country is a father/son player - I don't think you should be able to get them with pick 36 (or lower).

Agree that it is great to see son's playing for the same side as their father - but I'm in favour of some reasonable controls. Particularly given that some of the teams have only been in the league for a lot shorter period than others.

Geelong are a perfect example of why the current system needs to be in place

I agree, the rules are a decent compromise.

There was a trade off to also allow clubs access to the NGA players.
20% is a significant discount and as long as we plan our position within the drafts we should be able to get the F/S and NGA players we want.

                      Re: Father/Son Watch

                      Spitballing on this convo:

Essendon bid pick 8 (9 after Lynch assuming free agency comes in at pick 3)
                      Dogs match
                      Dogs match 1,551 (1,469) points less 20% - so 1,241 points (1,163)
Dogs get end of first round compo on Dahl, after Lynch compo & 3 priority picks: Pick 23 = 815 points
Dogs need to add 3rd rounder, approximately Pick 48, 302 points (1,117 of the needed 1,241 (1,163) points needed)
Dogs need to add in hopeful Roughead 3rd rounder compo of pick 49, or 287 points, and using 124 (46) points of them.

Dogs then have 163 (241) points left over from Roughead compo, then we have picks 66 & 67 after shuffling down from the natural selection which is 147 points. So we have 310 (388) points left for Khamis, which is him going at about pick 42 (pick 37) factoring in the discount already.

If Essendon bid top 10 on him, and Khamis goes pick 37/42 or higher, that's all our picks burned through in the first four rounds (except pick 7, used or traded). Hopefully we can get even slight upgrades on any of Honeychurch, Campbell &/or Roberts. Or if Adams gets a good pick, this. We look likely to have 4 or 5 live picks opening up for draft night, so after 7, West (going at Essendon) and Khamis (going 37/42 or higher), that's going to leave two picks around 84 & 102.

Hopefully there's nothing to Essendon actually taking him so high.

Father-son selections are difficult for the recruiting team. We have almost NO CHOICE but to select West whatever his draft position.

The upside to list management however is you're more likely to choose a player committed to the club.

And to be fair, so are we. Wallis, Hunter, Libba, Cordy and now West is a serious haul of talent.

We are. I was more alluding to how easily they got Ablett and others whilst holding onto all their draft picks
