The NGA rules are the same as the F/S rule, which means if club bids earlier than 40 you have to match the bid.

I agree it is ridiculous and not sure why the change since JUH.

I thought they amended it so that post JUH's year a bid on an NGA in the top 40 (or is it top 20) couldn't be matched. No change for Father Sons though.

No. If NGA players are selected in the top 40, their aligned club doesn’t have an opportunity to match. The legacy of other clubs sooking over Jamarra.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

          Yep.

          Cut. Nose. Spite. Face.

When it’s their turn to have potentially landed a first round kids for chump change, I hope they reflect on their short term thinking and their insistence that they should be allowed to have their turn. The change is probably good, while undermining the NGA concept, but they forced the change. I hope Essendon loses their potential NGA kid by a few picks, while they mourn Marra barracked for Essendon. So I can sing my version of Eddie Murphy’s ‘I have an ice cream’ song to Essendon about our NGA kid.

Yes Clubs overreacted to an NGA player going at #1 and this was the outcome.
Perhaps they should be allowed to match outside of the first round but I now think clubs aren't being incentivised sufficiently to put work into the NGA option.
It will probably be modified again.

There’s little point in having an NGA now.

Essendon will lose out this year - Munkara probably goes in the 20s
St Kilda are the big losers this year though. Their NGA kid is a likely top 10 choice (Cam MacKenzie)

I heard the Saints were furious about the change but their pick just about likes up where McKenzie would be selected.
Munkara might be on our radar at 39.

Literally no incentive in spending money on NGAs now, may as well scrap it.

I think it will get modified, it was an overreaction to an overreaction.
The AFL need teams to buy into the NGA process.

Exclude the first round. Keep it for other rounds. Problem solved

Thanks Comrade, I knew there was a change after JUH but couldn't think what it was.

The thing with preventing matching a NGA player in the top 40 is that it incentivises hiding players or getting them to underperform in their draft year.

                                ANOTHER FATHER-SON LOOMS FOR DOGS

THE WESTERN Bulldogs' tall stocks look set to be further bolstered this year, with father-son prospect Jordan Croft showing exciting signs at under-18 level.

Croft missed the opening round of the Coates Talent League with ankle soreness but returned for the Calder Cannons last weekend and had 11 disposals, four marks and kicked a goal.

The son of former Bulldogs defender Matthew Croft is eligible for this year's draft and played as a key forward, with the 200cm talent's athleticism and speed impressing.

"He showed some real snippets with his contested marking ability and didn't look like it was the first game he'd played in six or seven months," said Calder talent manager Matthew Burton.

The 17-year-old spent time training with the Dogs over summer and could add another long-term key position player to the ranks at the club that has brought in Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (2020), Sam Darcy (2021) and Jedd Busslinger (2022) with their top picks in the past three drafts.

The Bulldogs had six father-sons on their list last year – Mitch Wallis, Tom Liberatore, Lachie Hunter, Zaine Cordy, Rhylee West and Darcy – before Wallis retired and Hunter (Melbourne) and Cordy (St Kilda) departed during the exchange period.

Matthew Croft played 186 games for the Bulldogs between 1991-2004. – Callum Twomey
