Because the academies are there for the kids and to broaden the overall talent pool...not just for the clubs.
There are kids who simply need help that the state bodies can’t provide - so the AFL has given their clubs a bit of incentive, through priority draft access - to get them to help fix it. Now it doesn’t really matter how many players each club are eligible to put into their academy...they can all put in 100 for all I care - but they then have to manage those players. So the reality is no matter what access they have, how are they going to manage more than 8-12 and stay within the soft cap?
