    Re: 2019 Draft Watch

He’s a natural footballer. He had just spent a week on the piss after winning an sanfl flag. If it’s a pure athlete you want Gould isn’t your man. If it’s a Rick Kennedy type grab him and don’t let go. I’ve known will for about 5 years and he breathes footy.

I question that if he truly breathes footy if as you say he spent a week on the turps a week out from the combine.
No one is questioning his football ability though, he's clearly an impressive reader of the play, but clubs will need to ignore his combine performances and yet it's often a tiebreaker when it comes to calling the names at the draft.
No one is saying he's a pure athlete either but I suspect half back flankers need to be able to run with the ball and compete in the air etc and his combine results must raise a few questions.

I've not seen anyone jump or run well at 191 and 106. What I have seen is his video and he's a jet, absolute jet. He'll be an excellent player for whoever chooses him. His kicking is elite - it's clear he wants to use it by foot and use it well, he doesn't bat an eyelid when taking a risk by foot (probably the most important trait in modern footy BTW).

And while it's just one video, it's possibly the best one I've seen for a bloody long time for the position he's playing - and what I think he could be. I really don't care that he got on the turps and got fat, Luke Hodge did it every preseason for his first few years and turned out OK.

We don't have a player on the list who is anything like him. Sure we have plenty of mid sized defenders, but we don't have any like this dude.

Clayton Oliver was an absolute meat axe but slimmed down for the draft, I reckon Gould is probably doing the same thing right now.
        TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

          Re: 2019 Draft Watch

I'm not sure the Oliver - Gould comparison is a good one other that there is/was some work to do to lose some weight

Oliver missed selection for Vic Country but finished the season strongly to win the Morrish medal
Gould was never in doubt for SA

Oliver had some decent combine results including a top 10 in agility, Gould performed poorly

The real comparison between the two is finishing the season strongly and both of them did that easily did that.
I'd have to say a lot of clubs seem to place a great emphasis on how players perform in the 2nd half of the season.

He looks like a good player but given the combine results there is some work to do

I always think these guys that people say are already physically developed are actually the opposite. Arguably he has more room for improvement in a professional system. Plenty of examples to support this as well.

Move him in with someone like Bontempelli, Dunkley, or Crozier for 6 months. That’ll go a long way to sorting that out.

We had another super-talented, dumpy bloke pulled from SA in the first round (#1 too!). He turned out alright (except for the whole prelim knee mishap and selling his soul to the red and black devil, but that’s another story).

Due to our strong list profile, we probably can afford to take a player that will take a little longer to be ready.

                Re: 2019 Draft Watch

Twomey assessed all clubs, here's ours:

Pick 13: After adding key talls Alex Keath and Josh Bruce during the exchange period, the Dogs could look to the draft to address their need for a small forward. Cody Weightman looms as a consideration. The lively Vic Country goalkicker is good in the air and likes to fly for his marks, but is also clean and crafty at ground level and he has elite foot and finishing skills. Had a strong season at all levels.

Around the mark: Dylan Stephens, Brodie Kemp, Josh Worrell

                ------------------------

ESPN Knightmare Phantom Draft has us bidding on Henry, Freo match the bid, then also taking Weightman too:

                14. Western Bulldogs: Cody Weightman (VIC)
                Height, Weight: 177cm/73kg
Profile: Speedy small forward who makes something out of nothing. Weightman is dangerous at ground level, flies for marks, applies heavy forward pressure and hits the scoreboard.

                --------------------

Below short bios from 'The Roar':

                Cody Weightman
                177cm, 73kg
A really impressive small forward who has the ability to fly for big marks in the style of Jamie Elliott, but also knows how to crumb a pack. Top five at the draft combine for vertical leap. Uses the ball well.

                Brodie Kemp
                193cm, 82kg
A versatile utility who has played in a variety of positions during his junior career. Probably his best scope is if he becomes a big-bodied midfielder-forward at the next level. ACL injury means he’s unlikely to play much footy in his first year.

                Dylan Stephens
                183cm, 70kg
Prolific outside midfielder who is one of the best runners in the draft and can work up and down the wing at AFL level.

                Josh Worell
                195cm, 74kg
A versatile tall who has played at both ends, but is probably most comfortable in defence.

SO...Twomey is usually in the know.

Does all of this Weightman focus means we are done with Cavarra after one season and zero games?

Given his injury struggles throughout the year and his pretty poor end to the season, I think it'd be prudent to add some depth to that position given he is our only genuine small forward. The last 2 premiers are bursting with these types.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

You are better placed than most to consider this but would you be concerned given his weight and combine results?
We all know how talented he is but I don't think he's done himself any favors by testing so poorly.

                          The tale of the tape:

                          191.6cm tall
                          105.9 kg
                          Top ager 14/01/2001

Bottom 7% of players tested for the sprints 5mtr, 10mtr and 20mtr
Bottom 5% of players tested for agility
7 minutes 16 seconds for the 2km time trial which I think was equal last
His verticle jump was poor but his running vertical jump off his left foot was better than average

He's been compared to Shannon Hurn with his playing style.

Good pick-up Kruder, he's a quality player and can play in a variety of positions.
Quick burst of pace when he has to. Probably needs a bit of work on his kicking
He tested well for endurance, agility and pace at the combine
