Has WA ever had a no 1 draft pick? Can think of SA (Cooney, Gibbs) and Qld (Riewoldt).
Jack Martin's pre-listing is about as close as I can remember.

          1990 Stephen Hooper
          1991 John Hutton
          1992 Drew Banfield
          1993 Darren Gasper
          1996 Michael Gardiner
          1998 Des Hedland
          2010 David Swallow (last non-Victorian number 1)

Also there was a draft of sorts in 1981 and 1982 where interstate players were picked - the first picked were both from WA in Alan Johnson and our own Andrew Purser.

Early doors, every #1 draft pick was from WA - Drew Banfield, John Hutton, Darren Gaspar etc.

But in 'modern' times, only Headland I think.

Not helped when clubs are given the bountiful choice of Daniel Rich, Stephen Hill and Nick Natanui and they decide to choose Jack Watts.

that call would have been made by Barry Prendergast who also coached our reserves at Werribee in the Rohde years. He delivered Melbourne some shockers with all those early picks over a 4-5 year period.

It's an impressive list other than Hutton
Most of them were ready to go early on

Was was the issue with Hutton? Had a few 8 goal hauls, WAFL star, clubs seem to cut him pretty quickly.

I think his form dropped away sharply

No. I started to reply, got distracted at work, came back and finished my reply and your words magically appeared in the interim.

Happens (to me at least) all the time!

Mature age recruit. Could only play one position. Lead out, take a mark, kick a goal is a neat trick when there is space to lead into and your mids are winning...welcome to the VFL where the grounds are SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than Leederville, Lathlain, East Fremantle, Subiaco etc.

Fair enough. I was starting to get concerned because I've asked you questions on a few occasions but I don't think you've ever replied, was beginning to think I had offended you somehow.

Draft watchers seem to think Hayden Young (Lachie's little bro) is a strong chance at no 3.

I really like Lachie so I assume Hayden has some of his brother's traits. Things could change if GWS trade up to Melbourne's no 3 (as some think they might to get ahead of a Green bid).
