I just had a quick glance at the points chart, if we have (for argument sake) picks around 15, 33, 51, 69 next year (losing in week three of finals), then we are about 500 points down if MacPherson goes around pick 30. So we need to grab a couple of late 3rd/early 4th picks for next year and we can avoid deficit. An article last week said clubs don't rate this picks next year so we might be well situated to get them.

The list management issue I see is all 6 picks (getting 2 above) are all going to JUH & MacPherson. So our first live pick is 87. I don't see us taking 2-3 players from then on. It might even be a rookie upgrade with La Young. So next year to me looks like the bare minimal changes. So we might need to trim harder this year, to go easier next year.

JUH is certainly going to make Sam Power's job a little harder.
Is that just taking JUH and McPherson? There is a realistic late first rounder NGA kid coming to us next year too.

Yep, JUH & MacPherson. I assume you're referring to Nick Stevens. From his five games I haven't heard or read that, but I'm happy to take your word on it. If he's around 1,000 points, 20% discount leaves us with 800 points further needed. That can be made up with a mid second rounder (or 2 X third rounders) and a mid fourth rounder. No doubt there will be some trades out this year and next to bring in some extra draft picks for 2020. Or trading one or two of our third rounders this year for similar picks next year. If we don't get enough points and really want to avoid deficit, we can live trade our way out of it at next year's draft with offering 2021 picks. I'm confident Sam Power can work out a strategy to avoid deficit.

Most teams are happy to trade up in the draft at a points deficit to get the closer to the pointy end, we just need to identify which clubs don't have academy / FS kids and start conversations early.

Bulldogs & WCE were the first two clubs to swap picks when the AFL allowed it (classic win/win trade, we on traded the second round pick for Ben Hudson). I think we can find extra points to minimise any deficit, the query is if the AFL change the rules which reduce the 20% discount for subsequent kids tied to us after we take the first one.

Yep. By next year we can trade 2019, 2020 & 2021 picks. Plus players requesting trades out. I think we will be fine too. Our list will be even more talent filled. Good to look forward to.

This week in the NABL is the 'wild card round'. Oakleigh are already in finals so JUH has school footy or a week off (or come to Ballarat with the team). But both Kellett & MacPherson are playing this week.

Stevens and Craig-Peters are playing for the Rebels vs Kellett & the Jets.

Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I see some people referencing "if he wants to come". Never been sure how the NGA works, can he say he doesn't want to join us?

In the U/17 game being played on Grand Final Day. We've got two kids playing:

                      Jamarra Ugle-Hagan
Nick Stevens (NGA from GWV Rebels - tall midfielder, 191cm, 86kg at the start of the year)

add Cody Raak & Super Mac Junior we could be faced with all 4 prospects being top 30 candidates. It's a long way out but the early signs are promising. We might need more draft points.

Last time I looked at guessing the draft points needed, I think it's at least two more good third rounders at a minimum. Be it involved in player trades, or off loading some of this year's third rounders for next year's third and a bonus fourth our way (apparently recruiters don't see much value later on, but we do with points). Certainly trading our first rounder next year (where recruiters do see value) is on the cards. I'm going to be interested how much leg work Sam Power puts in this year, or whether he waits to next year (or split) before acquiring the mass of extra draft points we need.

                              It's good to be us.

I thought AFL had made changes to rules that stopped trama doing what Sydney did last year to secure Blakey? Didn't they trade down their 1st rounder and received a bunch of later picks which covered Blakey?
