They then traded back in, effectivly cheating but with no rule against it. As it stand we can future trade this year, or trade next year or live trade not doing what Sydney did. We live traded with Freo when Rhylee West was big on by Melbourne as an example.

The Swans picked up impressive key forward Nick Blakey with the 10th selection, but a live trade with West Coast meant they got him cheaper than anticipated.

Blakey, son of Fitzroy and North Melbourne champ John, is part of Sydney's academy, giving the Swans the chance to match any bid for him in the draft.

The 195cm left-footer was expected to go high in the draft, but when he slipped lower than expected, Sydney pounced to take advantage of the situation.

Making use of the first live trade in AFL history, the Swans shifted pick 26 (became 29 after bid matches) to West Coast in exchange for the Eagles' 2019 third-round selection.

That meant that when Blakey was eventually bid on, by cross-town rivals GWS at pick 10, Sydney gave up picks 34, 39 and 40 to match it (clubs must use their highest available selections when matching bids).

With Blakey now safely a Swan, Sydney went back to West Coast, trading their 2019 second-round pick for the Eagles' pick 22 (became 25 after bid matches).

Sydney will now go into Friday night's second portion of the draft with a pick in the second round, something they wouldn't have had if they didn't shuffle their selections with the Eagles.

For their part, West Coast gain another second-round pick in 2019.

Tom Harley, who is transitioning from football manager to CEO at the Swans, spoke to Fox Footy about Thursday night's movements.

"There's picks and there's points and all those sorts of things so we wanted to maximise our position in the points that ultimately got absorbed by Nick," Harley said.

"So we moved that back, starting with the pick in the 30s and then (we had) a clear focus to get back into the draft so that was the secondary trade with West Coast.

"It evolved tonight. It was really interesting having the trading of the picks on the night.

"We made a really clear focus to build our points towards maximising the bid for Nick and we were able to do that and we're pleasantly surprised he was still there at 10."

While what the Swans did was legal, plenty are questioning whether they should have been allowed to do it.

There is already plenty of animosity towards the northern academies and this sort of wheeling and dealing will do little to quell that.

Don't be surprised to see a rule brought in to close this loophole in the future.

The only other live trade on the night involved Carlton and Adelaide, seeing the Crows give up pick 19 and their 2019 first-round selection to the Blues for their 2019 first rounder.

Carlton used pick 19 to grab midfielder Liam Stocker.

It was a big play from the Blues, who are obviously banking on improvement next season, while also predicting Adelaide may slide down the ladder.

Should the teams finish closely it could be one of the all-time bargains, though another difficult year for the Blues and they may h

Chargers win a thriller, with JUH finishing with 3.3 including one shank from about 10m out.

              Bulldogs material!

In a super close game, 3.3 is an important contribution to the win in his first NABL final (and now going to prelim final). Still averaging three goals this NABL season.

Exciting month for him. Prelim final, possible final and the U/17 Futures game before the GF.

Draft Central Scouting Notes from the weekend (relevant one):

                #25 Jamara Ugle-Hagan

Ugle-Hagan was the dominant key position player on the ground, proving a real handful with the clean ball movement of Oakleigh particularly early on. His lead up marking was superb with every one sticking and he kicked two nice goals and even passed another off unselfishly. He would show again he wasn’t just a lead up and mark player with a great chase down tackle in the last quarter, converting the set shot to reward his effort. The bottom age talent could have had an even bigger day if he had kicked straight, going on to collect 13 disposals, six marks and kicking 3.3 with a few kicks going out on the full as well.

I’m a Kellett fan. Very good user of the ball on both sides, has pace. His coach Ryan O’Keefe has talked him up publicly also. Doesn’t get a lot of it off half back and it’s a position we’re stacked in but I hope we take him.

He's had a good year, form wise. From pick 57 we can match a bid on Josh for nothing. If we liked him later on and had a couple of really late picks around 80+, we can effectively move up the draft order for free to the bid if one came (or take him there). He's got a CV like Callum Porter (I.e. won every award as a junior) who we gave a chance to late in the draft. Maybe he's a shot late.
