    Re: 2021 draft watch

I was at the SANFL Prelim last night, while he was on a losing side Jason Horne-Francis was clearly the bog.

24 possessions, 3.3 (including two posters)

The Van Rooyen selection amuses me most - he's really only played 2x games at CHB (the champs games vs SA) yet somehow plays there in the toty? I don't know why I get frustrated with stuff like this since he mails it in every year but I can't help it.

Picking a team based on what your friends in the recruiting world tell you vs picking a team based on what you have seen are simply not the same thing.
Do you rate Darcy as much as is being spoken? Top 3?

I'm a big fan of Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera now, started the season slowly but did some amazing things in the reserves grand final for Glenelg, very much an outside player but has elite ability to play like uncle Gavin (but is taller)

But believe that Port is very keen

          Re: 2021 draft watch

I like the look of Leek Alleer from Central Districts. 196cm intercept marking freak who just smashed the running vertical jump record at the SA combine.

Leek Alleer leaps higher than Nic Nat and into draft reckoning

SANFL coach Paul Thomas says mature-age prospect Leek Alleer will develop “exponentially” in the AFL system if he is taken in the upcoming draft.

Alleer, who fled war-torn South Sudan with his mother and sister when he was six, has skyrocketed into second-round calculations after an eye-catching campaign for Central District as an intercept-marking defender.

The 20-year-old’s freakish athleticism was on display on Saturday, when he broke the running vertical jump record with ease in South Australia’s combine. Alleer recorded 107-centimetre, shattering the previous record of 103cm set by North Melbourne’s Kyron Hayden. Nic Naitanui previously held the mark with 102cm.

Thomas, who worked in development for Adelaide before taking the reins at Central District in the SANFL, notes that Alleer’s emergence has only just begun given he was sidelined in 2019 — his draft year — with both a broken fibula and dislocated ankle.

“He missed 18 months of footy, which means he probably wasn’t training a lot either,” Thomas said. “Getting extra craft will exponentially help him develop his kick, even his aerial presence, but then to stick those marks … exponential growth.

“Having been in the AFL system as a coach, you see the repetition they get, the extra time they get to develop their craft. That really is a difference and separates those in the AFL from the state leagues, the time they get to develop their craft.”

Alleer had been trialled as a forward and on the wing as a top-age player in the under-19 competition last year, but senior coaches at Central District soon identified his potential as a defender.

“I didn’t come across him until I took over as head coach at Centrals this year,” Thomas said.

“His body was pretty sound, and we saw him across the summer in drills that weren’t designed for any other purpose than team principles, and he excelled in defence pressing, making intercept plays, spoiling and numbering off. We saw that as a potential asset for us as a defender with his speed, reach, and ability to make that play.”

Alleer was thrown into the deep end in his senior SANFL debut after being assigned in-form Sturt forward Ash Johnson, who Collingwood recruited in the mid-season draft only a week-and-a-half later.

“[Johnson] was tearing it up a bit in the SANFL with his speed and athleticism, and Leek was able to manage and nullify that in his first game,” Thomas said.

Though Alleer is seen as a peel-off defender in the mould of players like Jake Lever, Aliir Aliir and Tom Doedee, his ability to adapt, to shut down roles is also appealing to club recruiters.

“A few weeks [after his debut], he had to learn to play differently on the spot. He had to shut down and play as a checking defender given that the opposition were moving the ball a bit too fast. He probably didn’t have a great first quarter, took the feedback on board from our backs coach and learnt pretty fast. You talk about his athleticism and his speed, but his ability to adapt and execute quickly shows that he’s a very intelligent young man.”

Alleer spoke to reporters in Adelaide on Saturday and said being drafted would have a positive impact on both his family and Australia’s Sudanese community.

“My mum, she’s been through a lot and has stuck with me throughout everything,” he said. “Just looking back at where she came from, the things that she had to go through to give us this opportunity at life, I think it would mean a lot to her.

“I want to be a role model and I want to show a lot of the kids in my community, my family, my siblings in particular, whatever you put your mind to, you can achieve it if you work hard.”

                    Re: 2021 draft watch

link ESPN's early two-round AFL phantom draft

                    1. North Melbourne - Jason Horne-Francis
                    Height, Weight: 184cm, 81kg
Profile: What separates Horne-Francis from the rest of the pool is his application and influence defensively, with his aggression, pressure, tackling, second and third efforts and run back in support elite even by AFL standards. He also plays a high impact-per-possession game, wins the ball at full speed through the midfield and causes headaches up forward aerially, when the ball hits the deck, and when isolated one-on-one.

                    2. Collingwood - Nick Daicos (Collingwood father-son) - bid matched
                    Height, Weight: 183cm, 76kg
Profile: The son on Peter and younger brother of Josh, Nick is this draft's most productive and consistent with averages of 36 disposals and two goals in the NAB League for Oakleigh. Daicos is more than just an accumulator, possessing rare composure in traffic, evasion, decision making under pressure and anticipation of opposition decisions in traffic.

                    3. Western Bulldogs - Sam Darcy (Western Bulldogs father-son) - bid matched
                    Height, Weight: 205cm, 77kg
Profile: In a draft lacking in the way of premier talls, Darcy is the standard of excellence with his long arms and reach, one grab contested marking, attack on the ball aerially, one-touch ground level skills and his speed and agility for someone his height. Given his rapid rate of improvement and mix of rare attributes at his height, he is one of this draft's highest upside choices for the long term.

                    4. GWS - Josh Gibcus
                    Height, Weight: 195cm, 84kg
Profile: A high flying key defender, Gibcus is at his best when he backs himself to read the ball in flight and launches for intercept marks. Also, adept defensively, Gibcus can equally remain disciplined and negate the influence of opposition key forwards.

                    5. Gold Coast - Mac Andrew
                    Height, Weight: 200cm, 70kg
Profile: Andrew is a light bodied ruckman and long-term project player with good skills, mobility and a long reach, who is likely to spend his early years developing as a key position player while he adds muscle to his light frame. What is breathtaking with Andrew is how high he leaps at centre bounces, often getting his waist above the head of rival rucks when he gets a clear jump at the ball and uses his soft hands to direct his taps to advantage.

Thanks for the photos and vids of Leek. He looks a step above that level, even if he is year older than most. Bigger in size and really strong in the air. He looks like a Natural mark. Not sure if you you can teach that instinct to mark like that; grabbing the ball at full height and just smashing packs.

He would be a great pickup as an intercepting backman. Be eager to see where he ends up, hope we can pick him up.
