    Draft picks: 23, 43, 44, 45, 52, 93

    List needs: Key defender, ruckman

Who could be available at first pick: Sam Darcy

In the mix after that: Charlie Dean, Sam Skinner, Cody Raak, Ewan Macpherson, Jack Avery, Hugh Stagg

It’s all about Darcy for the Bulldogs and rightly so. The son of club great Luke moves incredibly well for a 204cm big man, but what he can do in the air is even more impressive – at either end, too. With pick 23 set to be eaten up by the Darcy bid, rival clubs are aware the Bulldogs would be open to trading it, in order to strengthen its hand at the back-end this year, or next. The VFL’s Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medallist, Dean, could fill an immediate need in defence late in the draft, as could Skinner, with the former Lion starring as an intercept defender for South Adelaide in the SANFL this year. Perth’s Jack Avery was overlooked in last year’s draft but he’s another prospect capable of having instant impact across half-back, following a standout season in the WAFL. Raak (NGA) and Macpherson (father-son) were also overlooked by the Bulldogs in 2020 but trained with the club in January.
They've really locked in our our defensive gaps with these suggestions.
Dean and/or Skinner make some sense in adding depth to our KP defensive stocks. Avery is another defender but a smaller more general type defender. Raak more of a rookie list option I would suggest.

I like the reading Erasmus traits. Sounds like a good ball winning mid , good size . Hopefully he is quick and can run all day

Th is Dr for the posts . Enjoyable reading on what if….
I get the feeling that Freo are really into Erasmus. I think he’ll go higher in the draft than most people predict

What type of player is he? Midfielder I believe? I see he tested well for speed and agility at the SA combine.

          Edit - Found this:

          17. HUGH STAGG (15)
          (Glenelg)
          18, midfielder, 180cm, 79kg
          RP: 123 (Under-18)

Strong, powerful midfielder who loves winning the hard ball and making his presence felt in traffic. He is a high-energy player who can tuck the ball under his arm and burst from stoppages with great intent. Can push forward and hit the scoreboard, as evident by his 23 goals at junior level this year, but needs to improve his field kicking.

THE LATEST: Stagg hit the ground running on his return to Glenelg’s under-18 side after an impressive stint in the reserves. In Round 16 against Central, he tallied 36 disposals and eight clearances before booting 4.3 from 19 disposals a week later - a two-week period which underlined his match-winning traits.

I suspect he will go before any of our later selections but he'd be a nice addition for us if it played out that way.

                    Re: 2021 draft watch

THE TWO CLUBS SHOWING MOST INTEREST IN GLENELG YOUNG GUN STAGG

South Australian draft prospect Hugh Stagg says there are two AFL clubs in particular who have shown more interest in him than others.

The Glenelg young gun had a superb 2021 in winning the McCallum Tomkins Medal as the best player in the SANFL Under-18s, after leading the Bays to the Grand Final.

He also played for the SA state team in Under-19 games throughout the season, catching the eye of both Brisbane and the Western Bulldogs.

“Mainly I’ve spoken to two (clubs),” he said on SEN SA Breakfast.

“I attracted a bit of interest in the middle of the year. Through the state games I was hoping to catch a bit more interest.

“Brisbane and the Bulldogs are probably the most interested.

“They keep a bit of a closed book on it, so I don’t really get too much (from them).”

                    x close
As for interest from Port Adelaide and the Crows?

“You’ll have to tell them to give me a call!”

Stagg is a St Kilda supporter and a big Lenny Hayes fan, but models his game on two of the league's pre-eminent mid-forwards.

“I played as a midfielder this year (in the U18s), but I’m probably more of a small forward in terms of (playing) the level up,” he added.

“I think I’m pretty powerful and I’ve got pretty good speed as well. Probably those two things are the main ones (attributes).

“The Toby Greene and Jordan De Goey type players I try to model my game on.

                    “Obviously a long way away.”

The Tigers U18 captain was asked to pick out the most outstanding draft prospect he played with in 2021.

He opted for Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, the nephew of Essendon and Port Adelaide great Gavin Wanganeen.

“I was fortunate enough to play a month of footy with him and he’s a superstar,” Stagg said.

“His skills are elite and he’s also got that body that can pack on a heap of muscle. He’s got a bit of a slight frame, but this year it didn’t really matter.

“He improved his contest and used his speed on the wing and it proved quite successful for him.”

Stagg says he will head back to Glenelg if by chance he does not get picked up by an AFL club on November 24 or 25.

Sam Phillipou? I remember him as one of the many failed key forward hopes we brought into the club over the years. 3 games for 3 goals in 1995.

We waited a while for Phillipou to come over and he just didn't have the mobility for the AFL.
I remember seeing him in the SANFL GF and being concerned because he looked unfit and seemed to be running on the spot.
I also seem to recall him saying something along the lines of no matter how hard he worked he couldn't get to the fitness level of other players. Articulate guy

He was doing applied math and something else which is why he deferred coming over a year earlier.
Southern also stayed an extra in year in WA to play in a WAFL GF. The both arrived at the club at the same time.
