Western Bulldogs father-son prospect Sam Darcy will be immediately one of the AFL's tallest players next year but he is likely to keep growing.

Recruiters have been unable to get a glimpse at the exciting prospect up close for months due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

But when arriving at Sandringham for a pre-draft training session on Monday, everyone in attendance - including Darcy - was surprised to discover he had grown another 2cm up to 205cm.

The 18-year-old has the ability to play anywhere - forward, back, or in the ruck - and will excite Bulldogs supporters for years to come.

Rival clubs are expected to bid for Darcy during the first few picks in the draft, forcing the Dogs to snap him up early.

"He's an unique talent, this boy," AFL talent ambassador Kevin Sheehan said.

"He's like the King boys. In the air, Max King, Ben King; he's very special.

"The angles he comes from, he's courageous under the ball and just about every spot you can take a mark he does it.

"He's mobile and kicks the ball very, very well so he's got all the hallmarks.

"It might take time, but Bulldogs supporters are getting an absolute beauty."

He was destined to end up at the Whitten Oval, with father Luke playing 226 games for the club between 1994 and 2007.

Sam will be the third generation of Darcys to play for the Bulldogs after his grandfather appeared 133 times for the club in the 1960s and early 1970s.

"He's (Luke's) just been a great support base and given me great advice throughout this whole process," Sam said.

He starred with six goals in a Vic Metro game against Vic Country in June, but injury concerns and coronavirus interruptions brought his final junior season to a halt.

Darcy is coming off a stress fracture in his foot but should be right to resume full training during the next month.

He will add to an exciting selection of key forward talent at the kennel alongside Aaron Naughton, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and the injured Josh Bruce, who will miss most of next season.

Cal Twomey has released his November Phantom Draft. This time he links a number of players to clubs. He has us linked to Sam Darcy!

In this bumper edition, Cal Twomey ranks a whopping 35 players in the 2021 draft pool

Geez Sonsie and Sinn have slid from the start of the year.

Some quality in the late 20s/early 30s this draft. No surprise our pick 23 will be in demand.

It's just a number, there are plenty of effective defenders who some might regard as too short.

The three you have highlighted have been every good.

            Re: 2021 draft watch

Twomey saying it could be left to Gold Coast to bid on Daicos at 3 which could possibly move a bid on Darcy to 4. GWS though can't be discounted at pick 2.

Geelong seem to be favourites to land our pick 23 with rumours starting to circulate that it could be for one of their picks in the 30's and their Future 2nd. This would be a tremendous outcome especially if Darcy is bid on later than pick 3.

If we did land a F2 it would be interesting to see what we do with it. Would we look to trade back into this year's draft and who could we target? Or do we hold our Future picks? We would have F1 & 2 x F2 picks which would set us up very nicely for the 2022 trade/draft period. Gold Coast have a few boys coming out of contract. We could be in a very strong position, salary cap permitting.

Stephen May is the AA full back and was part of the best defensive unit in the comp this year. I'd take him ahead of just about any other defender in the competition right now.

In a lot of cases, not all, if you are good enough you are tall enough.
We had Lewis Young being touted as somewhere between 197 and 202cm this year and despite his mobility and athleticism we still couldn't find even a semi regular a spot for him in the back line.
We let 200cm tall Roughead go who's been more than serviceable as a FB for Collingwood because I think we looked deeper than just the height of a player.

Don't get me wrong, having 197cm tall Alex Keath has been a huge bonus for us but I don't think it's all about height with him.

Cody Raak: Keen to prove them wrong

After a second straight season of interrupted football due to the COVID-19 pandemic, players haven’t had the lead up to the draft they would have been hoping for, but for Cody Raak that's all old news.

In 2020, a lack of representative football and the cancellation of the NAB League saw the lowest-ever total of players picked in an AFL Draft.

Raak had come off a superb under-age season with the Western Jets, and was training with the likes of Marcus Bontempelli at Whitten Oval in the pre-season as a member of the Western Bulldogs Next Generation Academy. It afforded him the opportunity to learn from the best in an elite environment and gave the Dogs first dibs on Raak at the upcoming national draft.

However, when it came to the 2020 Draft, Dogs recruiters told Raak days prior to the draft that he wouldn’t be selected by the club whose NGA he had spent years in.

“I was pretty gutted and upset,” Raak admitted.

“After the draft, I had a chat with one of their recruiters and just said ‘I’m really, really determined to prove you wrong’.

“That’s how I attacked this pre-season, I wanted to show them that they should’ve picked me.

“I just trained that whole pre-season like I was pretty pissed off and whenever I thought things were getting tough and I didn’t want to do a session I just went back to that chat.”

The 19-year-old earned a call-up to the Footscray’s VFL side, contributing in three-straight wins to hold his spot for the top-of-the-table Dogs.

He was immediately comfortable taking assignments on dangerous forwards, regularly taking front spot and reading the play to intercept and get the ball moving forward with his penetrating kick.

It was the taste of professional football Cody Raak needed after lockdowns and AFL Draft heartbreak encompassed the previous 12 months of his football.

“I thought I was prepared [for VFL football], but it was good to realise how good they all are. Obviously the pace and going against men, it just made me want to work harder,” he said.

But once again, lockdown has played havoc with Raak’s journey. Its sixth iteration has ended his hopes of pulling on the Big V for the second consecutive year, as well as missing out on a VFL finals campaign with Footscray and even pulling on the Caroline Springs guernsey once more.

It's not all doom and gloom however, if Raak isn't picked up in the draft this season, according to his Western Jets coach Robbie Chancellor.

“For boys like White, Conway and Raak, it’s not the end of their journey if they don’t get drafted this year,” Chancellor said.

“The lack of footy has stunted the development of many players. What I’m looking forward to is seeing some really good players playing state league football in the next couple of years."

Yeah, I'd like us to give him a chance, but it doesn't sound likely. I thought he looked good in the 2 VFL games I saw televised early this year.

I probably rate intercept ability higher than most. A determined kid with a little bit of height who can read the play as a Cat B rookie, who was on the radar of rival clubs at the mid season draft. It seems like a free hit
