Re: 2023 Draft Watch
Who would be your preference? If not Watson is it Sanders or Windsor? With the distinct possibility that The Wizz will be gone before our pick and Sanders now clear favourite for our first pick, I wonder if we should be casting the net a bit wider.
Another favourite of mine Caleb Windsor would be a terrific choice for us. As a winger he fills a need on our list. He is quick and beautiful kick and all class. He also kicks goals!Comment

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
Glad to hear we are interested in Mannagh. Or is he going to be another McComb? Seems to have more tricks, and the ability to play more than one role (including the half forward role we need to fill) effectively...
But if we are only taking four picks...
- 1x mid (Sanders) or small forward (Watson)
- 1x tall KPP (Croft)
Then what are our priorities for the remaining slots? Another mid with some pace, and a ruckman?
If we get Sanders, Croft and Lual - what's the priority for that final space?Comment

Mannagh is capable of hitting the scoreboard which would give him an edge on many other players from the state comps.Glad to hear we are interested in Mannagh. Or is he going to be another McComb? Hard to know if he is what we really need.
We've still got some spots to fill across the playing list and if we were to land those 3 players we still probably need a midfielder or small forward. It probably depends if we intend on bringing in an experienced or mature ruckman and midfielder as free agents.
I'd be looking to add to the midfield mix.Western Bulldogs Football Club "Where it's cool to drool"Comment

Love your input throughout and particularly at this time of year Doc. Always quality and I've come to rely on it a lot. With the distinct possibility that The Wizz will be gone before our pick and Sanders now clear favourite for our first pick, I wonder if we should be casting the net a bit wider.

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
Just watched the Collard video and he looks to have genuine top line pace but also quickness in his thinking and first few steps to get moving/ clear. A bit of a worry about his penetration here and there.
Collard is a player I will watch closely over his career and I know MJP rates others ahead and he is a risk but that kid has it all on field from the vision that's available. The question is can a club get the best out of him?
Freo need to somehow get him, they have been the most vanilla club since its inception, even their coach bores me to tears listing to him they need some excitement.
Seems pretty good overhead as well.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
I haven't been comfortable with the Croft going eleven to twelve talk since it started. I look at the vision and while he's a package of amazing attributes there's not been the sheen/ class I'd hope for in a tall at that draft range. A few spots down to me makes it a no brainer to match a bid/ take him.I?m loving the 15-17 Croft bid calls. At 15 we keep 53 & 56 in tact and will hopefully come into about 46 & 49. Opens up some opportunities to try to trade up into the 30?s, trade in a future pick, if Lual slides to trade one out and use the c. 60 pick to get him after discount, or take a couple of 40?s picks for a change.
Hopefully they?re all correct with 15+.
It's not a knock on him, he just seems a bit raw and while I'm glad the intensity seems to be there I'm more comfortable with a later first round match to secure him.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
I agree with all that, but still, would he really be such a reach, for a team with a pick a few spots ahead of ours? Why would someone not be willing to risk a tactical bid on him.I haven't been comfortable with the Croft going eleven to twelve talk since it started. I'd be pretty confident that we'd not blink should a bid come from pick 10 onward. We'd match. So why not force the dogs to cough up.

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
I don't think he's at the level to reach to keep us accountable and risk landing him. Rather, the talking up of him has been media driven and absolutely in the range of us not blinking.I agree with all that, but still, would he really be such a reach, for a team with a pick a few spots ahead of ours? Why would someone not be willing to risk a tactical bid on him.

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
And in 3 years time when Macrae, Treloar and Libba are retired or on their last legs and Smith may or may not be a top line mid or even a Dog, how would you feel about relying on West and Garcia to be part of our best midfield rotation? Because it scares the shit out of me. I get the love for Watson, but if he?s not available, the chance to get a top end young mid on our list is, as you say, a godsend and something we?re screaming out for.I have a similar reservation with a high draft-pick pure mid. With the hope that Macrae and Smith get back to form and Garcia and West level up we might begrudge him the game time. The less optimistic outlook is they do not recapture their form or improve and Libba (I can't bring myself to write it..) in which case having Sanders would be a godsend.Park that car

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
I kinda like the fact that Sanders polarises people a bit, largely because of his consistency I assume and that’s he’s more substance than flash. Seems like the right set of reasons to pick someone as an inside mid especially when they can move, have clean hands and can kick the thing.
Watson seems like a generational small who just knows how to kick goals. Every side needs players like this and he’d be a great addition to our side if it were to land that way. I get some of the commentary on him being a one trick pony but if getting goals in a multitude of different ways and having excellent vision and field kicking counts for anything, he’s got a ceiling that’s a bit more versatile than I read in some places.
Curtain is another who could end up being the best player in the draft if he can develop as a midfielder. If he hands up a third tall, he still may end up an AA level player however it’s just not quite as impactful a position as being a dominant midfield giant. I can see why he’s slipping too as some are unsure where to place him and project out 4-5 years to where he’ll play his best footy and perhaps there is a bit of go-home factor which scares clubs off from a top 5 pick investment.
Can’t wait for the draft…
This thread has been brilliant to source information and variety of views. I’ve been very time poor and this has kept me close to the draft stuff which I otherwise wouldn’t have had a scooby do about so thanks folks.Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?Comment

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
Sanders. He has been fantastic. He has dominated. His u/18 champs was as good as you could want to see. I would argue Windsor is more of a need and would slot brilliantly into our line up, probably Round 1 too as I think he is good enough.
My only concern about Sanders, is not about him but more about how we have managed our list, is where does he play? We are already being forced to play inside midfielders MacRae and Bailey Smith in half forward roles that are not suited to them. Add West and Garcia to that conga line. I fear the same will happen to Sanders as he waits for his turn to play in the middle. Libba, Macrae and Treloar may be getting on but realistically could still play at least another 2-5 years.Listening to Brahm's 3rd RacketComment

Re: 2023 Draft Watch
Mannagh would be ideal for us. A half forward who is actually a half forward! He is infinitely better than McComb especially for a half forward role. In fairness to the latter he was played out of position with us (midfielder forced to play half forward because he couldn't break into a strong midfield and we didn't have any half forwards). Mannagh is a better ball user and his goalscoring ability has been phenomenally displayed this year.Glad to hear we are interested in Mannagh. Or is he going to be another McComb? Seems to have more tricks, and the ability to play more than one role (including the half forward role we need to fill) effectively...

Apparently, Freo are all over him and they have picks ahead of us unless we can find a way to jump the queue.Listening to Brahm's 3rd RacketComment
