Kobe Shipp is a highly athletic defender or winger type and Oscar Hine-Batson is a pacy small defender.
Could Shipp be the lockdown small/medium defender we need?

    Competitive prospect finds successful recipe

In 2022, it was in the Under-17 All Stars game.

In 2023, it was in the last Coates League home and away game against Tasmania.

A 22 touch, nine mark effort on Tasmanian goalsneak Jack Dolliver, kept to four touches and no scores, was a statement game for Dandenong defender Kobe Shipp, and he handled the assignment of Zane Duursma well in the following week?s loss to Gippsland.

?I think it would be hard to find a small back who?s played a better all round game ever than him that day,? said Stingrays coach Nick Cox.

?His stuff on the ground, his marking in the air, his ability defensively was all fantastic.?

At his best, 187cm Shipp has proven he has a complete skillset to match it with forwards in the modern game.

After a late call up for that Under-17 All Stars game ? an annual fixture played on the MCG to raise the curtain for the AFL grand final ? Shipp left his mark.

Playing with his trademark 2022 dreadlocks, the Beaconsfield boy started with a bang, taking four intercept marks in the first quarter and finishing the day as one of the prominent play-makers.

Last season was Shipp?s first in the backline, and his read of the play and strength over the footy were assets he built on.

When given a similar role this season, he thrived, mixing his shutdown capacity with his understanding of when to fly and drive.

?Having a match up is good because it keeps me accountable and in line with the footy,? Shipp said.

?I still have the licence to peel off and intercept, but there?s a fine line between doing that too much and playing on your man too much and I found that balance throughout the season.?

In between playing his natural footy off halfback, he spent a reasonable portion of 2023 on the wing, including the national championships due to Vic Country?s long list of rebounding halfbacks.

Shipp accumulated plenty of possession in Vic Country?s first game, giving him a strong foundation to launch off, and as well as the Vic Country and Rays coaching staff, he had an excellent asset in his corner.

Dad, Andrew, played 35 games for Fremantle, falling short of the required games to make Kobe eligible as a father-son, but still having strong nous to impart.

?He doesn?t say as much as what other Dads do but he keeps it really simple,? Shipp said.

?After every game I?ll talk to him about how I played and he knows what to say.

?He knows if I?ve had a sh*t game and he?ll tell me, but has a way of doing it where he keeps me on track and humble and he?ll give me good pointers as well.?

Shipp will learn his fate on 20-22 November at the the AFL National, Rookie and Pre-Season Drafts.

I was reading this last night and there are some bold and brave selections.

George Stevens at 25 runs against most other phantom drafts although all the reports of him being slow are somewhat out of sync with his combine results.

Jack Delean at 35 is also a bit high compared to most others but while he catches the eye a bit with his athleticism and goal kicking abilities his 2km time at the combine was a less than acceptable 7 mins 5 secs. He's only average in terms of pace as well.

It was interesting to see Ashton Moir so early in the draft order but I really like their write-up on him. Clubs need to look at him a bit deeper as he has a lot of AFL traits.

It’s really funny to me how many guys we’re seeing born in the early 2000s called Kobe.

My daughter is named Cobie, although she is only 10 and originated from Cobie Smulders rather than Kobe Bryant.

Surely they're named after Kobe Stevens?

They would have to have been early adopters since he wasn't drafted until 2009. Or maybe they just renamed the kids after Stevens burst onto the scene? Plus it's Koby Stevens.

AFL draft news: West Coast set to trade 2024 first-round pick to land Daniel Curtin

West Coast is poised to strike the first live trade of draft night in a move that would deliver the Eagles a Harley Reid-Daniel Curtin dream quinella.

The Eagles have spent weeks fielding offers for their No.1 pick and rights to Reid, but instead of trading it out they are suddenly expected to not only secure Reid but also bring in Curtin with a second selection inside the top 10.

That would deliver the wooden-spooner the best player in the draft in Reid and also the best local player in Curtin.

But it is expected to come at a significant price, with West Coast having to trade out its future first-round pick to secure Curtin on Monday night.

Remarkably, Curtin could slide past Hawthorn (No.4) and Melbourne (No.6).

That would leave Curtin available for Greater Western Sydney at No.7, and that is where the Eagles are expected to make their move.

Should the Eagles offer up their future first-round pick for No.7 it would be a dilemma for the Giants, but ultimately an offer that rivals expect would be impossible to knock back.

The Giants would still hold a first-round pick (No.16) and trading for the Eagles’ future first could potentially deliver them the No.1 pick in next year’s draft.

They are not desperate for a key defender like Curtin, given they already have a brilliant backline led by All-Australian Sam Taylor.

Should the embattled Eagles again finish last next season it would mean that they have effectively traded away the No.1 pick in the 2024 draft for Curtin.

But GWS Giants would also consider whether the Eagles could bounce up the ladder next season with a fitter list and 12 games at Perth Stadium.

Curtin, a 197cm left-footer, is also highly-rated by the Hawks, who need key defenders, and the Demons, who are starting to plan for life after Steven May.

But recruiting sources believe the Hawks have zeroed in on Cyril Rioli-like small forward Nick ‘The Wizard’ Watson for their selection.

That would see Watson partner premiership Pie Jack Ginnivan in the Hawks’ forward line for the next decade.

Rivals suspect the Hawks would be nervous using their early pick on Curtin three years after taking another West Australian defender in Denver Grainger-Barrass with a prized pick with limited success so far.

The Demons have been dazzled by draft bolter Caleb Windsor, a blistering outside midfielder who kicks goals and would immediately help polish the club’s forward connection issues.

The Demons know they would have to pounce on Windsor at No.6 because GWS would otherwise secure him at pick seven.

Geelong like Nate Caddy at pick eight and Essendon is keen on defender Connor O’Sullivan at nine.

Sounds like it. I'm happy with that.

On the flip side, would we also be keen to trade this year's first for the Eagles' first next year? It's likely to be pick 1 or 2.

I guess North not being gifted him (as North wanted) has worked for us then. The next picks could all be KPP and not in that top bracket of players.

Great question, I was pondering this earlier today and I'd have to decline. We've moved 3 x 1st round picks on to get pick 5 this year and have done our research on the likely players. I'd stick with that mainly because I want players in now not in 12 months time.

I agree, whilst it could be pick 1 next year West Coast could also improve a little and we get little to no upgrade in draft position but lose 12 months of development.

It's a good deal for GWS though.
