What it tells me is that Power and co never look at the trade period in isolation. When wheeling and dealing during the 2022 trade period he also had a eye on what 2023 may look like.

I'm starting to feel a bit more confident that maybe, just maybe, we haven't sold the farm as much as we all first thought by trading our our F1 in 2024.
I remember Power saying he even looks a couple of seasons ahead in regards to drafting.

      Re: Rolling Draft Order 2023

      Updated Final:

      30 & 33 out for Lobb
      45 in for Hunter
72 in for Schache has been struck as we can?t use it (meaning we got nothing for him in effect)

We packaged (now) 54 & 57 for Pick 40 from the Lions. But then unpackaged it last night for 47, 48 & Coffield (plus we paid a F4). So Hunter, a third and F4 got us about 1/3 of Croft, plus pick 45, plus Coffield.

So by dragging out the Lions negotiation last year it gave us Pick 61 which we used to trade to Sydney to rise up the order 5 spots, and gave us a slight points upgrade and allowed us to get Coffield virtually for a big surplus.

So the Dunkley & Hunter trade fully extrapolated after our moves is: Clarke (Pick 21), 1/3 price for Sanders, points upgrade for Croft (Pick 15), Pick 61 (live traded for pick 45 now) & Coffield at a big surplus (former Pick 8) - and millions left in our salary cap.

So final trade was 13, 23 and future 1st for pick 6...
Obviously if we had 13 Croft would have been bid on higher, so it needed to go either way.

My assessment of the trade all comes down to where the future 1st lands, and is the part my little risk averse brain can't come to terms with. We've really banked on being a top 4 side.

          Not quite.

Pick 23 is pretty much equal to the two 3rds we got this year after shuffling (only about 100 points). Just cancel them out.

          Pick 13 & F1 - for - Pick 6 & F3.

With Ashcroft pick 1 next year. Even if we finish 9th and them 13th:

          Picks 11 & 13 - for - Pick 6 & 45 (plus allowing us Croft)

It’s a good trade. Finals makes it better. Top 4-6 makes it very good.

                FWIW - our current picks (post night 1) are 45, 47 & 58

Essendon currently have 39 - fingers crossed a Calsher Dear bid comes early on night 2 as that pushes their pick out to 40 and we can match a Lual bid is they make one.

and Croft. You have to remember we got points back from that trade in the form of later picks to still pay for Croft.

So one way to look at it is 13 pays for Croft (as that was about his range always anyways) with a bit of change and 23+F1 goes for 6 (Sanders).

In that full context it's not bad. There is the uncertainty of where that F1 will be...but Sanders looks really good, we don't actually know how good next years draft crop will be (next year is always the deepest, most talented bunch ever) and a year of development into Sanders is important given Libba could actually just explode any day now and we'd be screwed. He might even play a role in getting us further up the ladder, reducing his price.
