Lobb should play where we need him, tail wagging the dog again. 30yo is nothing for a ruck. Again we are already top heavy in the forwards.
Smith can pinch hit for a game or 2 given he develops this year. Ned Moyle has had only 2 games btw.
No problem if we want another backup if English leaves but if English leaving it won't be the end of the world.
Darcy is miles off being a best 22 pure ruck in 2025.
Lobb isn't going to perform playing full time R1, a position he has not played in for his entire career.
    Smith aint ready for ages.

We're already arguably thin in ruck stocks. Being happy to see our best one leave at the end of the year and not have a ready to go replacement is crazy list management.

Slight nitpick as I agree mostly with your assessment but I believe Lobb played FT ruck in 2018 for the Giants before being traded to the Dockers where it looks like he might have played first ruck again in 2019 before going back to part time duties. It does seem Lobb has been primed to potentially take on more ruckwork this year but I'd think that's as a more prominent second ruck/backup not a full season of being number 1 which is a bit of a different ask

So we can agree he hasn't done it for the vast majority of his career. He's a terrific back-up ruck man on match days though because he can contribute with both goals and hit outs.
Just being tall doesn't make necessarily make a lot of players ruck man and I feel that's the case with Darcy and Lobb and both should be regarded more as KP forwards who can ruck when needed.

When you put it like that it may be a case of we can't afford to lose English and we can't afford to keep English...

I think this is what they call a catch 22.

Yeah Collingwood couldn’t afford to lose Grundy who was better than English at the time.

You don't let players like English go, despite many on this board not having confidence in him and wanting to trade him out. (Hey Aza )
How many good 206cm blokes who can run all day and play ruck are there in the AFL?

He was always going to be a slow maturing tall and he is now hitting his peak and AA to boot.

My prediction, he will stay till he reaches free agent status.

Collingwood had Cameron ready to step into the number 1 ruck role, and Cox as a very good back up.

If we keep English, it's likely been for a bit cheaper than he would get on the open market.

My point is if we let English walk, we absolutely need to replace him. The cost of getting someone in may be high in terms of picks & cap.

If we lose English, whoever we bring in if somewhat competent is going to cost us $750K to $850K anyway.

They also added Frampton as a just in case option and drafted Steene and Begg to have a couple of emerging rucks as well. They might have also acquired McStay with a view that he could provide the occasional chop out.
The Pies only let Grundy and Treloar and Phillips before that go because they messed up their salary cap.

Who me? Not have confidence in English!

Being a RFA does help our position in retaining him.

If only there was a contract thread so I can work out his status.

Well if he is RFA, we better get cracking to sign him up
