I think fans would be more attached to players if they know they come from a local club.
I see the first Tassie mention in there too. The new era begins.
They list the state league club and the community club for each player, see here.

There is a player from my club that is a possible late first round/early second selection at this stage.

      Umm? Nope.

South is his state league club and he would have been doing development programs with them since 13.
Official listing. It's great their junior clubs are acknowledged, the players have to come from somewhere.

Cool - He played for Mundijong Centrals before that...where does it end??

I think it's more than enough to quote their state league club.

It ends at their current local club because obviously it's not practical to list every club they have ever played for.

We have put a heap of time, effort and money into our junior development program. If our players make the grade they end up at Gippsland Power which is great and they undoubtedly benefit greatly from being involved with their program. But to say our club doesn't deserve any acknowledgement is quite frankly insulting. The AFL do sweet FA to help community footy clubs as it is, the least they can do is a 1 or 2 word listing of a draft prospects home club. I don't see how anybody could have a problem with that?

It's amazing what can be achieved when no one cares who gets the credit.

When players have a pathway club, 2-junior clubs and a school though, where does it stop? To your point, why is the club they spend AusKick to y10's less worthy than the one they play 5-games of Y11/12 footy for in between school commitments? Some would say that original club is the one that REALLY deserves to be mentioned...I'm sure you can think of examples of that right now where your club is on the right side and the wrong side of that ledger.

Keep it simple: State League club and State/region. You know and the player knows where they come from.

I agree with you, and think they do announce the current local club at the draft? My concern would be that in the current age you'd have a lot of 'big' local clubs recruiting juniors in their later years to get their names up in lights if it was promoted ahead of their state league club.

Do the current junior clubs get any financial incentives from the AFL if players get drafted?

I loved seeing Reid proudly wear his Tongala polo on draft night, I'm sure the Pioneers weren't happy but his home club deserves more of the credit for his development.

Certainly not saying the local club should be named ahead of the state league club. So in Victoria they just say Harley Reid - Bendigo Pioneers/Tongala. I get that sometimes the final local club isn't the most deserving of the credit but what can you do?

I believe there is cash paid to the junior clubs when a player is drafted. I recall we received something for a player drafted to Essendon a few years back that hadn't played for us since he was about 13, yet we still recevied something. Not sure it actually makes much sense though, the clubs producing AFL talent probably need the money the least.

Travaglia is an intriguing prospect. A little bit if Ed Richards in him, similar draft range too if the draft watchers are to be believed.
Seems like a really solid first round this year, no 1 standout player but the 'cream' seems to be a bit larger this year as opposed to past years with an elite 6-7 players. Some phantom drafts have Sid Draper at 7 or 8 and I just love the way he plays.

He's worth having a look at. Id like to think we might be in the mix for Christian Moraes but who knows.

Moraes seems the be slipping based on the 'media phantoms', a combination of rate of improvement being not as high as other kids perhaps?

To the draft watchers, the phantoms im reading say Lombard the GCS Academy kid is going top 10. Is that about right?

If so, GCS will need to trade out our first rounder and the end of first rounder (North compo pick). I wonder if we did say Smith & F2 for a First & F1, we trade both F1 & second rounder this year to try to get the firsts off GCS this year. (Trade for a F2 to hold enough picks next year as required, say a Macrae or CD)

That then leaves us with 3 First Rounders this year and a large salary cap holding if the Barrass offer was in fact $1M a season.

Not reading a lot about GCS needing to trade out their two later firsts. But if Lombard is top 10 they will need to, and with Smith, we could have the future picks to take in a hot hand to trade/draft.?.?.

There will be hot competition for those picks - I wonder if the Hawks will try and grab one to get their deals done.
I like the thinking though. If the potential FS for 2025 projections are correct, our F1 will be on the table.

No doubt they’ll be competition if they need to trade them. I’d like to think we have some good will as trading groups. We could even throw them out third if we weren’t going to use it too to up the current draft and also the future picks. It’s interesting that draft watchers are talking up Lombard but the footy media isn’t connecting the GCS picks just after his draft range estimate. If it’s right, I hope we are after them hard.
