It could be worth having Olli Hotton come down and train with us for a month. Bad run with injuries at the Saints.

Now you're talking. He was highly touted in his draft year. Was the Sheezel, Wardlaw one from memory.

That's what these spots are for I believe.

I'm quite surprised he didn't fire a shot at afl level.

Prior with Essendon seems a no brainier. Replacement/ upgrade on Kelly this year.

Yep, clearly too good not to be on a playing list.

Yeah, that is a bit whack. Maybe they are saying they will play VFL and just want some extra training?

This snippet on Fox-sports about Darcy Mac training with North

As for the Roos, ex-Suns utility Darcy MacPherson was sighted at training at Arden Street prior to the drafts, and while North doesn?t currently have a list spot open, there remains the potential for vacancies later in the pre-season due to injuries and/or retirements.
Allowing players to train on potential vacancies is setting a double standard to me.

If the club is happy to accommodate them then what's the downside? Worst case scenario they get paid for 4 months to be fit, if they're a missed draftee it might be the only AFL action they see and would be a cool experience, and if they get picked up then it's all great.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

I think choco is referring to an AFL rule apparently introduced this year that you can have two train on players per vacant list spot. If other clubs are limited to two despite having a list spot, then norf shouldn't be allowed any for a 'potential' spot.

Thanks jazzadogs. I was directing the double standard comment at the AFL. I am all for it for clubs to have as much funding allocated to trial players out. Someone trash could be our treasure but saying 2 players per free list spot but then opened it up for 'potential' spot due to retirement or injury just leave too much for interpretation and rule abuse.

On that. Are they paying him the $1,000 a week required? If so, the AFEL are indirectly funding this payment - a payment for a train-on player with no actual position to obtain.

From the player pov I think they should definitely get that money

Then the AFEL should give everyone/all clubs free money to give to players who can’t make an AFEL list. Kind of crazy if this is happening, but the rules do seem clear if they’re a genuine train-on they need to be paid. So good on Macca if he’s getting it.

@BT Is this article on AFL you are referring to?

AFL locks in dates, clarifies rules for pre-season SSP

The pre-season supplemental selection period will run from November 27 to February 19

THE AFL has written to clubs on Friday to confirm the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) rules for this summer.

Clubs have been advised the SSP will commence at 9am AEDT on Monday, November 27 and run across the pre-season before the deadline at 5pm AEDT on Monday, February 19.

To be eligible for the SSP, players must have nominated for the most recent AFL Draft or previously been on an AFL list.

Clubs will have two windows to formally sign a player via the SSP: November 27 to December 14 and January 15 to February 19.

Only two players can audition during the pre-season per list spot available, with a maximum of six players able to trial at the same club at one time.

Triallists will be paid a minimum of $1,000 per week to train, with clubs also responsible for the cost of return airfares and accommodation if the player is invited to train with an interstate club.

Yes and no. Didn’t know it was in an article, but yes I understood they got paid for their services in training for a spot.
