If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

Pick 56 - Nicholas Winmar (Claremont, WA)
      Height: 190cm, Weight: 78kg, Weight: 27/04/91
      Wing/forward

Nic has a lot of potential but he just needs to work a lot harder. Bit of a bargain in such a shallow draft

Bulldogsman is posting something now and I'll have the next two picks done in a flash.

I also have the dogs_r_barking selection for a bit later.

                  Kane Lucas (East Fremantle, WA)
                  Height: 188cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 26/06/91

                  Joshua Donaldson (West Perth, WA)
                  Height: 193cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 04/05/91

                  Alex Carey (Glenelg, SA)
                  Height: 181cm, Weight: 76kg, DOB: 27/08/91

When I looked at West Coast's list I got a shock at how unbalanced their list was when you only looked at their young players.

What really surprised me was how few genuine midfielders they have, their list is full of 187cm flankers. Masten and Swift will be good but they fall away really quickly. I took Lucas because I thought he will be very good but also because they desperately need to get some class into their midfield.

They lack genuine ball winners. Of the young blokes, the only real inside ball winner is Priddis (and I've never really rated him that highly anyway) so I took Carey (I wanted - and expected to get - Hutchins). Carey played really well v Vic Metro but in a Scott West kind of way. That's fine if you are as good as Scott West but if you're not you just look slow and lazy. He did get it a whole lot of times though. I just wish he didn't look so much like Dylan Smith, the kid North took at 6 a few years back who played about 3 games.

They only have two rucks on their list - Cox and Naitanui (and Sullivan as a 3rd year rookie) - but there simply wasn't a ruck worth taking. They really need to look at whoever they can find in the State Leagues still eligible to rookie.

They have McKenzie as a tall back (Spangher is no more a KP than Everitt is) and Kennedy as a key forward. Brown can play forward or back. Notte may or may not make it.

Donaldson has played all year as a ruckman but unless he grows a whole lot he has no chance at ruck in the AFL no matter how high he can jump. He's athletic enough so I'm banking on being able to teach him to be a defender.

I had a definate plan to take WA kids. Partly because their state team was so bloody good this year so there were plenty to pick from and partly because I've never understood Perth-arians and Adelaide-ites not accepting that go-home is real. They have enough good local kids so why risk it?

If I didn't get caught short being 100 miles from a computer last night I might not even have taken Carey.

Absolute giant at 206cm and 97kg. Coming off a knee injury but I think he is worth the risk so late into the draft. I went with the best available. The Crows have a couple of young ruckmen already but I think it's the perfect area to have multiple options in as development takes so long.

Okay, seeing as Tom Hill and Nicky Winmar were BOTH taken just a few picks before mine, and they were my primary targets, I'm pulling one from left field:

                          Collingwood - Pick 62 - Gavin Roberts (Norwood), 188cm, 71kg.

                            Swans picks

Pick 6 - Jake Melksham (details provided earlier)

Pick 14 - Koby Stevens (details provided earlier)

Pick 38. Joshua Cowan (North Ballarat Rebels, VIC)
                            Height: 183cm, Weight: 71kg, DOB: 16/03/91
                            Recruited from: Daylesford
Smart winger with excellent ball winning ability. Composure and decision making are his strengths. Can run and carry as well as work both ways. Vic Country U18 representative in 2009.

Having secured Melksham and Stevens earlier the Swans continued to add to their midfield with Cowan making it 3 midfielders with their first 3 picks. Bolstering the midfield was what we came here to do and that has been accomplished. The beauty of it is we have 3 players bringing different skill sets.

Pick 54. Gerrick Weedon (Claremont, WA)
                            Height: 186cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 25/05/91
                            Recruited from: Clontarf College
Hard-working forward who is extremely strong in the air. Vision and awareness in traffic as well as sound defensive pressure skills are features of his game. WA U18 representative in 2009.

Swans also wanted to add to the forward half. Jacob Thompson from Calder was also very much in the mix here.

                            Pick 55. Mitch Thorp (Hawthorn)
                            Height: 194cm, Weight: 88kg, DOB: 25/12/88
Former no.6 pick originally from Tas.
Once described by Scott Clayton as the most natural centre half forward he had seen! At this point in the draft there wasn't much left to choose from and we were keen to add to our KP stocks. A risk certainly but the Swnas have a history of providing football salvation to wayward forwards. Why not with Thorp? He won't get away with any ego related attitude in Sydney. If Swans can get him right they may pick up the bargain of the draft. If not, then not much lost.

The alternatives here was Luke McDonald the big key forward from Eastern Rangers and Levi Casboult the forward/ruckman from Dandenong. Both over age players with their respective teams who had fantastic seasons.

                              Adelaide summary
                              Pick 13- Lewis Jetta
                              Pick 29- Mitch Duncan
                              Pick 45- Roland Ah Chee
                              Pick 61- Max Gawn

I think Adelaide have a well balanced list which allowed me the freedom to ultimately pick the best available. The areas I see most room for improvement in is explosiveness/carrying the ball and small forward options and I think the respective selections of Jetta and Ah Chee go towards addressing them. They also both come with an AFL ready bonus, which helps address the needs/wants quickly for a side that could be right up there.

As I mentioned earlier, I decided to select Duncan ahead of a potential small forward in Christensen down to two reasons. I saw him as being the best available and wanted to use a lower draft pick on my small forward "need/want". The aim was to get Ah Chee with pick 45 with Wanganeen and possibly Winmar as possible back ups at 61 (luckily Ah Chee was available as the latter two were gone by my last pick!). I think Duncan will suit Adelaide's new running style and will fit in well with their young running brigade.

Gawn was a best available pick and while they don't really need a young ruckman, it's an area where it pays to be proactive due to the usually long development periods.

                                Pick 59 - Carlton
                                Tom Hill

Tom could be a good key forward or ruck prospect for the Blues. A lot will rest on the shoulders of Henderson (traded from Brisbane) and Black (drafted at #12) to replace Fev, and another option that could go forward, ruck or both won't hurt. This particularly as sides are progressively moreso looking for rucks who are not one trick ponies

                                Tom Hill (Northern Knights, VIC)
                                Height: 199cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 07/04/91
Recruited from: Northern Bullants FC (VAFA)
Was touted as a late prospect in last year's draft, but having had another year in the TAC Cup may have improved his chances. He looms as a mid-range selection.
                                Draft range: 20-60

                                Pick 60 - St Kilda
                                Derick Wanganeen

Similar to Christensen selected earlier. They could really use a couple of that player type, needing to bolster pace out of the midfield and in the forward line. Plenty of crumbs down there from Riewoldt, Kosi and Gardiner and the GF games from Schneider and Milne tell me they need to explore other options. Wouldn't mind him at the Dogs for pick 63 if still available

                                Derick Wanganeen (Port Adelaide, SA)
                                Height: 172cm, Weight: 63kg, DOB: 05/02/91
                                Recruited from: Mallee Park
Wanganeen, who is related to Brownlow Medallist Gavin, is a quick player with strong defensive skills. He appears to be a third-rounder onwards.
                                Draft range: 40-rookie
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.
