Re: WOOF - Official Phantom Draft #1 (4 Rounds)

    Fremantle

    # 4 - Dustin Martin (mid)
    # 20 - Brad Sheppard (defender)
    # 36 - Jack Fitzpatrick (ruck)
    # 48 - David Astbury (tall defender)
    # 49 - Chris Luff (tall defender)
    # 52 - Myles Sewell (mid)

I went in with the intention of drafting the best available players early on & then seeing what was left & deciding how to approach things as it became obvious who was available.

I thought for sure Dutin Martin would be taken with pick 3 so I was set in my mind that I was going with Anthony Moribito at pick 4. I couldn't believe it when he went at pick 3, so I just went the reverse.

I was hoping that Talia or Panos might have been available at pick 20, but they had been taken so Brad Sheppard was a handy player to fall back on.

I didn't expect Jack Fitzpatrick to be available for my 3rd round pick & was keen to get a ruckman here, so Max Gawn was who I was expecting to select here. Very happy to get Fitzpatrick.

2 late 3rd round pick & I identified a small forward in Roland Ar Chee & 2 defensive KPP's in Astbury & Luff . I really though I'd get one of each, but Ar Chee was selected by Adelaide. I couldn't really split Astbury & Luff, so got greedy & snaffled them both.

My last selection & I was looking for a midfielder who could play a run with role & was very happy to draft the VFL's Liston Medalist in Myles Sewell, brother of Hawks onballer Brad. My back up here if he was gone was NSW captain Dylan McNeil.

Overall a ruckman, 2 hard at it mids, a back flanker & 2 tall defenders.

So, who were some of your possible selections that you missed because others got in ahead of you?

Mine was Roland Ar Chee, who I was hoping to take with pick 48, but he went at 45.

Who were you surpprised was still available when it was your pick?

I thought Jack Fitzpatrick would have been taken prior to pick 36.

Christensen at 32 I was wrapt with
Winmar I just missed out on at 60, going at 56
It was interesting that were a few clashes later in the piece where it is supposedly anyone's guess late in this draft

I love your work Doc and he isn't a bad player, but Weedon makes sloths look like they cover a lot of ground...as for defensive pressure, are you even certain he has heard of it?

I thought I was going to get away with a couple of beauties; thought Christiensen was going to fall to me at 34 (as some of you may know, I'm a fan), and Ah Chee at 51 (was strongly considering him at 34; ever since his performance at the carnival, he has become one I'm hoping we'll take), but sadly, neither came to fruition.

                  Serhat Temel

                  Serhat Temel (Calder Cannons)
                  DOB: 12/05/91
                  Height: 194cm
                  Weight: 89kg

Sticky hands and can kick a bag of goals. 8 in a half to be exact. Lasted until the second last pick as he often outbodies opponents at junior level to get his goals which will not be as successful in the AFL. Still a good prospect for the Saints

Only need the Dogs 4th rounder at #63 from dogs_r_barking and we are done, unless Temel or Roberton are chosen.

Will be interesting to see if DRB has any thoughts on a 5th rounder as well as it seems we will take 4 draft picks and we traded our 3rd rounder

                      Carlton Summary

                      12 - Aaron Black
                      43 - Andrew Hooper
                      59 - Tom Hill

Pretty happy with the quality of the players given the late picks Carlton are going in with. A key forward, small defender/mid and key forward/ruck will help Carlton who lack quality in defense and attack but are pretty flush with developing mids

                      St Kilda Summary

                      32 - Allen Christensen
                      60 - Derick Wanganeen
                      64 - Serhat Temel

Very happy with Christensen at 32. The Saints defense is overflowing, was looking to add some quality mids and forwards with contested ball skills, defensive pressure and explosive pace. They lost the GF from lack of quality smalls in the wet, two added here should help along with Temel which should see them strong in the key forward stakes for years to come

I pinched that BIO from the afl draft camp invite list which was on the afl site. How would you describe him Mike?

                          This from dogs_r_barking

Pick 63 is Taylor Duryea, DOB: 24.4.91 recruited from Murray Bushrangers.
179cm, 74 kgs - speculative small crumbing forward.

Quick agile with sublime foot skills whether he is kicking for goal or kicking inside 50. His overhead ability belies his height.

From what I have updated this morning we are just one pick from completion and just a few team summaries would top be good value.

I have 2 sides to write up so I'll do that this evening.

I probably jumped the gun earlier than I would have wanted, but I really like what I have seen and think he'd be a terrific fit for the Power. Given their selections finished at 16 I had to pounce.

Overall a very good mock draft. Going to enjoy picking through this in the coming days, thanks to all involved.

                              Just to re-cap Port's selections:

                              John Butcher - Key forward.
                              Ben Cunnington - Inside midfielder.
                              Mark Hutchings - Inside midfielder.

                                Geelong

PICK 17 – Geelong - Jake Carlisle (Calder Cannons, VIC)
                                Height: 196cm, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 01/10/91
                                CHB/CHF

Probably would’ve gone for Sheppard at this pick but I’m pretty happy with Jake anyway. Jake had a fairly good U18’s carnival and a pretty good finals series for Calder. He moves well for a big fella, has strong hands above or below, good skills and he reads the play pretty well. He can play both forward and back really well, I saw him get over 30 possessions rotating forward and back so he can rack them up. At this stage though he’s fairly inconsistent and those types of games are few. Still has a lot of upside to his game.

Pick 28 - Jessie Crichton (Tassie Mariners, TAS)
                                Height: 183cm, Weight: 66kg, DOB: 18/06/91
                                Mid

Really happy to get this kid as he’s one of my favourites and in my opinion is underrated. Jessie had a fairly average year compared to last year (note was rated as possible a first round selection at the start of year), but was still fairly solid. Can play inside or outside and can pick up a lot of the ball. He has a great ability to find space where there isn’t and knows what’s around him which what makes him dangerous. But probably what I like about him the most is his competitiveness and willingness to do the hard yards to put the team first (would be very coachable). His kicking isn’t as bad as people say but needs some work. He could play a couple games but I’d leave him in the two’s for a year and let his body develop.

Pick 40 - James Craig (North Adelaide, SA)
                                Height: 196cm, Weight: 91kg, DOB: 18/04/91
                                Ruckman/key position

Ultimately I see James as a ruckman but to start off he could play as a tall defender or forward. James had an excellent U18’s carnival earning himself All Australian ruckman. He has a terrific leap and is good at the tap outs. He also has pretty good footskills and is a strong mark. He’s another player who gives his all and would be very coachable. Like Ryder and Clark I see Craig in a key position spot at first but then eventually in the ruck.

Pick 42 - Ryan Harwood (Tassie Mariners, TAS)
                                Height: 184cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 08/07/91
                                Mid/HBF/HFF

Ryan also had a great carnival earning All Australian selection. He has good foot skills, is good around the clearances and knows how to find the ball. Again he’s another one who is just a hard working footballer who gives it his all (By now I guess you’ve realised I love these types). Is prone to making a few decision making errors but is generally okay. At first I see him starting off as a defender, but eventually I see him taking over Ling’s role as tagger.

Pick 56 - Nicholas Winmar (Claremont, WA)
                                Height: 190cm, Weight: 78kg, Weight: 27/04/91
                                Wing/forward

This pick would give Geelong something a bit different. Nic is an attacking player with good skills, pretty good evasiveness, is fairly quick and good overhead. The biggest question mark over him though is his work ethic, which I guess now is called the Guy O’Keefe syndrome. He goes missing for periods of the game which it really all comes down to work rate. At this pick though he’s well worth the risk though.

Pick 65 - Dylan Roberton (Dandenong Stingrays, VIC)
                                Height: 190cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 21/06/91
                                Third tall defender

With Milburn nearing the end and Harley gone Geelong will need to replace a few of these. Roberton uses the ball really well and is able to set up play from defense. He’s had a few big jobs on players taller than him but does a good job on them.

                                Summary

With Geelong’s ageing list I’ve gone with a few all sorts with ruckman and running defenders being more a priority. Would’ve liked to get one more small running defender but there should be plenty in the rookie draft with Tutt, Long and McAdam not getting picked up. All in all Geelong should be pretty happy with a CHF/CHB, quality mid, utility, winger/forward and a tall running defender.
