Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft

If Gold Coast and Melbourne were prepared to give up picks 2 and 3 for the Mini Draft picks we were never going to be a chance.

We are still in a great position to have a fantastic draft.

I mean just those first 2 drafts were bad enough, but now swapping the mini draft picks between each other is just sickening.
I thought these picks were for the new teams to get older and experienced players,
not to pick up are junior players.

We didn't get him, we move on and concentrate on who will be available, by the sounds of things going by what Ashcroft said to the trade week guys, Clayton was always going to snag Martin, saying Clayton still has pictures of Martin on his wall.

No matter how we played our cards, GC were in a far greater position to get him.

The general discusion as been whether the club had played its cards to early or not.
I am of the opinion the club made a gallant effort in trying to secure Martin without him costing us the farm.
For a start you said we were outplayed by the newest club and by Melbourne. How are we expected to interpret that other than as a judgement that Gold Coast and Melbourne performed better than us?

As other clubs are prepared to offer picks 2 and 3 to secure the MD picks, we couldn't have realistically done anything at all to change the outcome.

We had no real control over the events that have unfolded so I'm going to do my best not to be disappointed. Let's hope Dalrymple and co are able to get the best players possible at 5 and 6. Both need to be home runs.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

The thing is, with O'mera, Viney gone effectively our picks are 7/8.

As disappointed as I am to miss out on Martin, I'm in the camp that the club did everything it could to get the MD picks, and got trumped by an offer we could never beat. I read that Scott Clayton has a poster of Martin on his wall...big fan of him and unlikely to have ever considered not getting him if he was available.

Looking forward to seeing what we can get with picks 5+6...I don't know enough to have a preference, but the odds are in favour that at least one will be quality. I certainly hope we hold on to them now.

They rated Martin higher than Viney and got their man. That's more important than holding Melbourne accountable.

Worst possible result for us but that's the way it goes.

                            Thanks Mofra.

PS. I note that Emma said "Talk that the Dees could now trade no.3 for second pick in the mini draft (WA forward Jesse Hogan.)"

Melbourne were always going to take Viney at 3 if required. They even admitted this. Gold Coast still could have landed Martin.

Clearly there has been a little deal struck with the 2 clubs, My guess is Melbourne will pay overs for another GC player. Maybe Caddy?

Melbourne do seem to be the big players - reports now that Melbourne put pick 4 on the table for Dawes & Wellingham, and Wellingham's manager has stated that he still wants to go to WCE.

Has Caddy put Melbourne as a preferred destination? The Saints have (presumably) two mid range first rounders at their disposal
