If they don't they lose them. They cannot keep them for themselves

      Yep, they do.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I wonder if this 'deal' will be drawn out, or whether the clubs will seek to come to an agreement sooner rather than later.

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft

        Ready, Waiting

ONLY two of 17-year-old trio Jack Martin, Jesse Hogan and Josh Kelly can be on AFL lists by November through the Greater Western Sydney mini-draft. It's a situation they often find themselves discussing with each other.

"We talk about it a bit," Martin told AFL.com.au.

"We don't know what's happening. We ask each other who you're speaking with, and what's going on, but we have to sit back from now on and let it unfold."

Martin is considered the leading candidate to be the first picked in the mini-draft, where clubs can trade with the Giants for the two selections.

One of Hogan, a key forward, and Kelly, a classy midfielder, is likely to fill the second spot, with clubs split on which player should be ranked higher.

Others eligible for the mini-draft include Matt Crouch and Luke Dunstan, who have tested at this week's NAB AFL Draft Combine, but they appear unlikely to be at an AFL club this year.

Martin's place at the top of the group seems most clear. The West Australian is a quick, skillful midfielder, who jumps high, takes marks, and tackles well.

"He's the obvious one, everyone knows that," says Kelly, a Vic Metro representative.

"I remember the first time I played against Jack, it was probably in an under-15s carnival. I wasn't much of a player, I was sitting in the forward pocket, and he was playing at centre-half forward.

"I think he racked up 41 or something of the 44 votes in the carnival. You could tell he was a rare talent. You couldn't play anyone on him. He was unstoppable."

The race for Martin appears to be led by the Western Bulldogs, who hold picks five and six at this year's NAB AFL Draft. He has also met with Gold Coast, Melbourne and Geelong this week, all clubs with high selections or compensation picks to offer the Giants.

Martin moved from Broome to Geraldton when he was 13 in a bid to further his footy, so the prospect of going interstate next year wouldn't bother him.

"The clubs have asked about that a lot. I'm a pretty dedicated person and want to be the best and want to stick at my footy," he said.

"I'm not really that much of a person who gets homesick so if I come over to Melbourne I'll be used to being away from my family."

Already a member of the AIS-AFL Academy squad, where he got to know Hogan and Kelly better, Martin shone at this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships as a bottom-age player. He was named in the under-18 All Australian team.

"I was quite surprised with my performance at the championships. In the first game I went out there and I didn’t expect it to be that quick. The game was so fast and the ball was just zipping around," he said.

"I had to adapt really quickly to the game and that was a bit of a wake-up call. I went in at quarter time and told myself to adjust to it very quickly if I was to get into the game.

"I got my head around it and ended up playing a few good games after that."

Not only do they have to trade their MD picks, but they can also trade pre-selected players and Anderson is one of those (Anderson is rated by some as an end of first round talent, but MJP and Bulldogsman would know better than I how to value Anderson.)

So there are definitely two assets up for auction in Mini-Draft picks 1 and 2, but there is also Anderson whom GWS could offer as a sweetener without him costing GWS anything. This is where the idea for using both picks 5 and 6 comes in.

We are certainly in the driving seat when it comes to securing Martin (or not.)

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft

I think we are forgetting that Gold Coast would also love Jack Martin on their list.

            What is more valuable?

            1) Jack Viney
            2) Pick 2 in this years national draft
            3) Pick 5 & 6 in this years national draft
            4) Jack Martin

Gold coast could very well trade pick 2 (and something else) to GWS for the mini draft pick 1 which would then put them in the box seat for Jack Martin.

I think it is a very real possibility that Gold Coast will end up with mini draft pick one, which will result in Jack Viney slipping to the second round.

When Scott Clayton and Dom Ambigo are involved they are very very smart operators.

They could also bid for Viney, have melbourne use pick 3 on him, then trade for Martin.

Gold Coast may also want Toumpass on their list next year a lot more than they want Martin available the year after. No-body on this forum knows right now.

Would be interesting to see where bulldogsman and mjp see where Toumpass sits compared to Martin.

Oh, and also no-body on this forum knows anything for sure, it is all just pure speculation.

If Jack Martin is THAT good, and it appears he is.
We have to remember that we're competing for him.
If it takes picks 5 AND 6 just to get him with no sweetener.

It may be a price worth paying.
We so desperately need a real beacon of hope.

I'd rather get ONE of those types than two 'solid players'

The market will decide how much we have to give up.

Also, it's worth remembering drafts as recently as 2006 in which we failed to land a single player.

If Martin is as good as they say, just get him.

If Viney is not nominated by Gold Coast, then 4 top quality players will be taken by GWS with pick 1, GC with pick 2 and Melb with picks 3 and 4 before our picks 5 and 6. Our picks 5 and 6 really are only valued as 5 and 6.

If Gold Coast nominated Viney today, either Gold Coast (with pick 2) or Melbourne (with pick 3) must take Viney. In this situation there will only be 3 top quality players taken before our two picks. Our picks are much more valuable if Gold Coast nominates Viney.
Effectively those picks are already degraded because of last years mini draft picks. If you want to talk about real values.

No, not 2 picks for one player. We have picks #5 and #6 in a good draft. we should be able to get 2 good, possibly great players with those.

If we get Martin for a deal involving both our picks, we also want another good, possibly great player coming our way.

Well of course all of the picks from the last few drafts are degraded because of mini-draft and pre-selections etc.

My point is that however you value our #5 and #6 picks this year, they will effectively become one selection more valuable each if Gold Coast nominates Viney on Monday.

This may not be a semantic point I'm making here - if there are only three "live" picks before our picks, the club may re-evaluate what to offer for Mini Draft pick 1; and, we might also pick up a more desirable player in the normal draft than we could have otherwise selected if GC or Melbourne burn a pick taking Viney.
