Giving this some thought there's a chance if GC nominated pick 2 for Viney then Melbourne could have said fine you have him and we'll be in the box seat to get MD1 for our pick 3 and take Martin. Given GC were supposedly in love with Martin they obviously weren't prepared to take the risk.

There's some speculation St Kilda are chasing Mitch Brown from west coast, I'd imagine if that happened it might account for one of their first round picks.

I may have missed this but can you remind me - if they had've bid with pick 2 and Melbourne used pick 3, could they have still used pick 2 to trade to GWS. Doesn't seem fair you can use the same pick in 2 different ways.

In my opinion, if you commit to using a national draft pick to bid for a FS and aren't successful, you should be forced to use that pick in the national draft.

          Or Jason Cripps.

Cripps wants to return home to WA, so maybe they will work out a deal that way.

Not exactly the avalanche of criticism you are alluding to.

I didn't refer to an "avalanche of criticism" - I said that by saying we were outplayed by GC and Melbourne that you were unfairly bagging the club - and you were.

Let's let it go. I am sick of the negativity I often read on here but I certainly didn't mean for you to feel that I was being hyper-critical of you. I am not, and don't want you to have that impression.

Disappointing news, but did we expect anything else?

We have been the 'Bad News Bulldogs' for a little while now... When will it stop?

They new GC wanted him, so hence why they went two picks.
Quite simple they win because they're more crap than us .

Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft

Why didn't another team further up in the draft order bid for Viney? Someone with a pick in the teens surely would've been interested and bid to keep the dees honest? I recall the Saints made us use a first rounder for Ayce Cordy, staggering Viney can be taken for a second round pick if he is as good as reported. Dees getting the rub of the green, first the Scully over compo and now Viney as a second rounder.

It had to be GWS or GC bid with 1 or 2 to make the Dees use a first rounder. Any other club bid is after their first rounder and therefore only able to force them to use their next pick, ie 26

Scott Clayton is one of the best and savviest trade week negotiators in the business. There is no way known he would have thought that Melbourne would pass on the opportunity to take Viney at pick 3. With that in mind there was no reason whatsoever for GC not to bid pick 2 for Viney knowing full well it would still be there to give to GWS for the Martin MD pick.

Yep I fully expect Melbourne to do a deal with GC this week where GC win the trade quite convincingly.
