Re: Dogs Keen on Jack Martin in Mini Draft

It has been reported this morning my Emma Quayle that GWS were happy to give us Martin for picks 5 + 6 but we werent prepared to do that, see here: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-new...008-279d5.html

Until the weekend, most clubs considered the Western Bulldogs, who had done a mountain of work on Martin, to be at the front of the queue. The Giants weren't interested in a deal floated by Richmond that would have involved their young midfielder, Dom Tyson, joining the Tigers, GWS getting the Dogs' first two picks - five and six - and the Dogs landing Martin, pick nine and possibly another player. GWS still wanted both the Dogs' picks and were happy to give them one back (No. 12, on its way from St Kilda) but that wasn't high enough for the Bulldogs. They'll go to the draft instead.

Hopefully that was the right decision. I am not sure how I feel about this, it will depend who we get with 5 + 6 but having pick 12 plus Martin isn't all that different from the 3 way deal that had been proposed where we got pick 9.

How do you feel about this?

I would have been very happy to part with picks 5 and 6 for just Martin and Anderson. If that was a possibility and we didn't pull the trigger then I'm very disappointed. Martin will be a sure-fire gun and Anderson looks the classic Dayne Beams underrated achiever sort. Picks 5 and 6 at this draft are more like picks 9 and 10 due to last year's mini draft, and the two highly rated father sons Joe Daniher and Jack Viney.

Disappointed we didn't have the guts to pull it off. I guess we thought it was too much though, so fair enough.

2 picks in the top 10 for 1 player is too much

Yep I agree topdog. As much as I would've loved a player like Martin at the club, we just have to hope that the players we get for 5 and 6 are top notch over their career with us.

How can a club pretty much demand 2 first rounders for a 17vyear old anyway? Arent these new teams getting enough privileges from the AFL? and what about gcoast demanding 2 first rounders for caddy...absolute joke.
I will never see #16 the same!!

I disagree, not for someone of Martin's talent. It's very, very rare. Obviously the club disagreed and I won't hold that against them. I'm still happy with picks 5 & 6, so I'll leave it at that.

We need more than one potential elite player to improve our situation.

We could have still got a potentially good player with pick 12 (or Anderson) along with Martin though. Anyway I don't want to talk about it anymore. What's done is done.

Glad we didnt roll over for GWS. They can get stuffed as far as I am concerned.

Smith was pick 17 in the last draft and Dahlhaus was wayy off.. Just goes to show We better nail pick 5 and 6.. Fingers crossed

                        I missed the part about 12. 5 & 6 for essentially 1 & 12 I would do.
