I dont understand why we haven't implemented a wage subsidy yet. Would have saved a lot of jobs and queues at Centrelink.

Given they implemented an 'intent to claim' process, hopefully the wage subsidy they're talking about bringing in shortly means a lot of those that selected this option and were going to get stuck on the Centrelink merry go round can get the wage subsidy and go back to work once this is over.

But honestly, who knows what businesses will even be left once the dust settles. We are all in uncharted waters here and everyone is flying by the seat of their pants.

Yeah that is very very true.

I just feel like the obvious ones (Myer and other big businesses that posted tens of millions of dollars profit in the past 2 years) could have been handled much simpler if the Government had acted swiftly on this.

Seems like we are the only major Western Country without it on offer. UK and NZ both announced well before they did a lockdown.

$1500 fortnightly JobKeeper payment to be given to employers who are then legally required to pass on to stood down employees. Still getting my head around how it works but this will be helpful for my mother in law who was going to jumping into the Centrelink queue shortly.

It should also help those that are being required to burn up their annual leave/time in lieu payments, but devil is in the details.

I had a guy get into a tiny lift while myself and two other fully kitted fireys were investigating a fire alarm. He was a little guy and I didn't even see him get in until the lift stopped three floors beneath where we were going. I just heard him say "thanks" when the doors opened.

If I'd seen him get in he wouldn't have been thanking me.

They really done a poor job of implementing this now. Nearly 1m workers will miss out on it and places a huge requirement on the business to do it.

And $1500 a fortnight is going to be tough for many families. I hope everyone gets through this.

I think it's a good measure and not a large impost on businesses to implement. It's a fairly simple payroll function and the payment will allow the business to pay staff to complete it.

Are you referring to casual workers with less than 12 months service missing out, as that's the only significant group I can see affected?

Yeah thats the one, nearly 1m casuals are employed for < 12 months. Why is there a restriction of 12 months on it, person that started that job in Jan this year is already relying on that money and that job.

I also dont really understand the $1500 figure, its basically minimum wage (currently $740 a week). NZ and UK have gone with 80% of peoples wages which seems a lot fairer but at least it is something.
