    Re: 2017 Tour of India

Strong position, a great spot to be in. India played an extra bowler so if we can set a big score in this innings it gives us a great chance

Warner's gone and Shaun Marsh needs to back up again from his last innings

As quick as you like and Marsh and Handscomb have been dismissed. and we are 4 for 163.

The pitch has suddenly come to life. The ball's spinning ridiculously for day 1.

Hopefully the last 4 wickets can get us as close to explain 300 as possible.

Steve Smith is a freak, he's fast closing in on the best batsmen I've seen. All comers and in all conditions.

Bang on 300. Let's see how we bowl on it.

Staggering that some still dont give him the credit he deserves

It's his technique. Much like Chanderpaul, it's unorthodox and commentators are struggling to work out why he is so successful

At the point of impact his head is still and his bat is incredibly straight - it is flawless when it matters.

Must admit I had him pegged as a spud after his first few tests but he is rolled gold elite.

I remember after Smith's first couple couple of Tests there was a poster on here (can't remember who) who was adamant Smith was everything that's wrong with Australian cricket. We pick talented players and push them through and back them to become elite, when we should be picking the 6 batsmen who made the most runs in the most recent Sheffield Shield game. He believed picking Ed Cowan was proof when were finally on the right track

I think I remember that discussion but his objection was more around picking Smith as an all-rounder.

I remember it being about CA identifying talent and giving them opportunity, when we should've been picking on most recent form even if it was from a mediocre journeyman. His gripe was Smith was being played because they thought he had the talent to develop into and elite player, when Cowan and Klinger and the like should've been in the team.

                      Maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

Cowan & Klinger? I hope you mods banned them indefinitely.

I think you have it right but I also remember him being very critical of him being picked to bat at number 8 and played to bowl his leggies

Cracking test match that is right in the balance. Have to give credit to the curator for this pitch and also Ranchi - something in it for everyone.

First session tomorrow is pivotal - Saha and Jadeja can both bat so the new ball needs to strike in the morning to either get a small lead or 1st innings parity. We saw what happened last test when one lower order partnership left us chasing the rest of the match, and India do have the extra bowler in this test compared to Ranchi.

This match means a lot to both sides. There is genuine heat between both of them and given the position of the match after two days I think a result is a likely outcome.

Whoever loses will be massively disappointed. Before the tour I didn't think we could push them the way that we have and while the selectors have made some mistakes during this long home and away campaign the planning for this series has been excellent.

We should not fear traveling to any country with the flexible bowling attack we have and especially with Steve's Smiths batting prowess. I didn't think we could be so competitive against them without Warner doing a couple of those big innings he known for along the way.

India 32 ahead puts this right in the balance with them having to bat last. How many do we need?
