Why do we persist in sweeping?

Must be a pre-meditated / team plan to combat the spinners. Backfired big time.

Lost 9 wickets for 53 today. Most wickets due to trying to sweep. Coach must go for this if that was his plan

It's the hope that kills ya. We lost this yesterday letting India getting 75 too many and really poor batting through the middle today. Smith, Renshaw and Handscomb let themselves down.

Agree on yesterday, really let them in.

I didn't think it was possible for it to get so bad. So mindless.

We can't really blame the pitch and it has to come down to our reluctance to gut it out with the bat during the tough patches and our selection process.

                    Re: 2023 Tour of India

Think they'll ring the changes for the third Test. My early thought for the XI is:

                    Head
                    Khawaja
                    Marnus
                    Smith
                    Handscomb
                    Green
                    Carey
                    Starc
                    Cummins
                    Lyon
                    Murphy

Tough to drop Kuhnemann after a decent enough debut, but Starc's reverse has been missed. Think that's the strongest side we could put out in these conditions too (except Inglis for Carey as he's just a better player of spin).

Some of the shots our batsman went out to were appalling shot selections. Smith, Carey, Labuschagne and Cummins and Renshaw got themselves out with poor decisions more than brilliant bowling getting their wickets.

You've probably got this right but it's hard to see us being competitive. We seem to have lost it above the shoulders.

The issue as I see it is the sweep, reverse or otherwise, hasn't really worked to this point so why they doubled down is beyond me.

We don't ask the players to knuckle down and build an innings and we are prepared to cope this sort of crap.
McDonald is not the answer just because he is a players coach. The whole "We must not disturb the delicate genius" is wearing thin.

                              Sounds about right to me.

I thought Kuhnemann was too expensive and never very threatening

Sweeping isn't the problem, it is sweeping on length instead of line. Sweeping was very lucrative for Khawaja, Marnus and Head and got us ahead of the game after the first 2 days - these 3 used the sweep variations (for the most part) strategically against the right balls and alongside straight bat shots down the ground, and they swept only when the ball was pitching outside leg or off. Khawaja perished twice from sweeping but one was a blinder (after top scoring in the match) and the other was the right shot but the wrong execution.

Renshaw and Carey especially are compulsively sweeping in this series and always on length, which makes it very predictable for the Indian spinners (who are world class) to attack the stumps/pads. Smith's dismissal sweeping (for a player of his world class) was awful and spooked the rest of the batting line-up - he didn't even get close to hitting it.
