    2024/25 - Aussie domestic cricket

The first round of the Shield has kicked off and some terrific news is that Pucovski is back opening for the Vics!

We'll get a good batch of rounds in before the first Test of the summer so we should get a decent sample of guys pushing for that opening spot.

Caleb Jewell is one that might be talked about a little more over the next few months. He was the stand-out performer for the Aus A side, has started to compile some good runs for Tassie over the last few seasons and is currently 87* in his first Shield knock of the season.

Fingers crossed Pucovski doesn't suffer anymore issues.

He's spent the winter playing club cricket in the UK (averaged 50+ and was a success) and he's brought that form into the Shield.

He still looks very leg-side dominant but the pronounced trigger movement across his stumps that he had when he debuted for Australia seems to have been toned down. WA has really played into his strengths and bowled far too straight, but he looks very composed and has a set routine between deliveries.

He's an interesting player to watch - he's kind of the orthodox version of Steve Smith in terms of his scoring areas and where you can target him

He's got off to a solid start against WA. Here's hoping he stays fit and well.

I'm not happy that Jake Fraser-McGurk is playing for SA but batting spots are tight for the Vic's.

The Vics succumbed with late wickets on day one and WA really consolidated yesterday. It was important for Bancroft to get off to a good start. Will he do enough to replace Warner?

Neser and Peirson combined for a 200-run stand to bring Queensland back into the game against NSW. Both made tons, but Neser was excellent grinding out 140 from 292 balls - he's now got 5 first-class tons and continues to bang on the door of selection.

WA are putting the screws on Victoria too who are staring down the barrel of an innings defeat. It's interesting that Corey Rocchiccioli has well and truly outbowled Todd Murphy. He's another very, very good young off-spinner.

Corey Rocchiccioli with 2/13 off 26 overs with 20 maidens is tight bowling.

I can remember one of my junior coaches telling us that it didn't matter if we werent conceding runs, if we werent taking wickets then someone else would take our bowling spot. I wonder if he's let the WA team know that Rocchiccioli needs to be replaced? Two wickets off 156 balls...
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Western Australia easily defeated Victoria by an innings.
If you get a chance, have a look at the catch that Cameron Bancroft took at short leg.

Jake Fraser-McGurk has just scored the fastest ever List A century, with 100 off 29 balls.
                    He's a talented batsman.

Chasing Tassie's 435 - the highest score ever in Australian List A history...I haven't seen any of it but would suggest it's a fair old flatty at Karen Rolton.

One player worth having on our radars is Jack Edwards from New South Wales, he's only 23 and had a big start to the season.

In the first three List A games of the summer he's made 107 runs at 36 and taken 8 wickets at 12.6.

In the first Shield game of the season, he made 87 in his only bat and took 6/36 and 1/63 - this is on the back of a century in the final game of last Shield season (I think it might've been his second Shield ton).

He's a super-interesting player. He made really big waves in under-age cricket, from memory he averaged mid-40s in the U/19 World Cup as a 17-year old and also made a huge 190 against a touring England side before he'd turned 20.

NSW threw him in early as they do and he's scratched around for a few seasons, making handy contributions in short-form cricket without ever getting going. He's mostly been known as a top-order batter, but he's slid down the order and he looks to have worked on his bowling and it's starting to get him results.

In terms of a player - think Shane Watson. He's a big and powerful ball-striker who bowls nippy medium pace with some lovely away shape. I think he has heaps of talent and I really love his game awareness. If he has a big year, I hope he starts being talked about for A selection.

Hopes of a full season of Sheffield Shield cricket for Will Pucovski have hit an early snag with the batter set to miss Victoria‘s match this week against Queensland in Mackay.

Pucovski, 25, had only just returned to domestic cricket, playing the Vics‘ opener against Perth last week, a match in which he made 39 and 0 as his side fell to a heavy defeat against an undermanned Western Australia.

He was then left out of the squad to face WA in a one-dayer, with Cricket Victoria saying that Pucovski‘s focus was red-ball cricket.

But it‘s understood he will not make the trip to North Queensland for the Shield match starting on Saturday.

The MCG curator really doesn't want to produce any more lifeless pitches!

NSW were lucky to make 102 at 8/54.
