    Re: Euro 2012

    Time for some spleen venting.
Why on earth is this tournament played in racists dungheeps like Poland and the Ukraine?
Countries full of right wing racist thugs have no business hosting any tournament.

    Absolute DISGRACE!!!!

If you somehow find some live stream somewhere online otherwise it will just have to be score updates on line or SBS which have some games live. Who are the top 5 teams who are favourites to win Euro 2012. On FIFA - it needs an overhaul to get rid of the corruption. Sepp Blatter has held that FIFA leadership for too long.

IMO they are Germany, Spain, Netherlands, France and maybe Sweden(or Italy, but I'd prefer the Swedes). Germany-Spain final coming up with Germany to be champions.

Thanks for that chef. No surprise there really with the teams as of course Spain and the Netherlands were in the 2010 World Cup. What odds are Greece at to win Euro 2012?

Thank god not too many games are on free to air or Fox Sports.

My sleeping patterns are already going to cop a hammering with the TDF and the Olympics on the horizon.... Happy to sit this one out.

You have first hand knowledge of life in Poland?

I'll be there for almost two weeks from 29th of June - I don't recall Poland ever having a Polish language test for immigration (like Australia used to) nor restrict immigration based on race (like Australia used to), and I've been welcomed with open arms. Australia has a much worse record on race based discrimination.

I will be in Krakow for the finals which isn't hosting any matches but is the home base for the English fans, should still be ok (hopefully). Heading up to Gdynia afterwards, big music festival on just after the final (50,000). Should be plenty of atmosphere

Have a good time there Mofra. The English fans are guaranteed to crate a great atmosphere no matter where they are playing.

I thought Remi was over-reacting too, but there is clearly a problem with the tournament now. Racism towards black players and fans (even though the tournament hasn't even started yet!) is already widely reported, the Dutch team has officially complained, Sol Campbell said that any black fans travelling to the tournament are basically signing their own death warrant, Platini has already had to discuss protocol around how to deal with racist chanting and banners (referees can stop matches but players are not allowed to walk off the field), and the tournament director has openly admitted that there is a chance that teams may actually be disqualified from the tournament based on the three-strike rule if their fans transgress in this area. In his own words, he's also admitted that it will be a massive problem for the entire tournament.

Just as South Africa 2010 came to be known for vuvuzuelas, looks like Euro 2012 will be forever remembered as the racist tournament. It's disgraceful.

ps. Yes, I have been to Warsaw. It was quite a long time ago, but I have rarely encountered a more backward, monocultural racist pond of humanity.. I hear it's a bit different now, but clearly old habits die hard.

It is a shocking that racism is still going on in Football. Does this have something to do with the politics of these countries as Remi suggested.

Well, one does not want to generalise, but it's hard to come to any other conclusion. It is also not acknowledged as a problem in the country, from my experience anyway: the average layperson is happy to say all kinds of ridiculous things about people of other backgrounds but would be very offended if you called them on it or suggested that they were racist. It's a mix of monoculturalism and ignorance, I suppose.

More problematically, there are also strong right-wing extremist type groups that permeate throughout the country, some who are happy to exercise their views using violence. A lot of these types also support football clubs (similar to the Ultras in Italy etc.), and have links to neo-Nazi/skinhead type gangs, creating a more violent strain of hooliganism similar to that seen in England in the 70s and 80s.

Do you think there might be trouble at this Euro 2012? That is very bad for the game and the countries.
