    Re: Essendon

So Watson has written about players Essendon had that they let go and have flourished at other clubs.
Bombers supporters now wanting a big cut of the list and rebuild..
I thought Dodoro was the best recruiter/ list manager in the business.

If Essendon recruited them, doesn't that mean Dodoro can spot talent?
If Essendon let them go because they were under-performing, doesn't that mean there was some sort of player dev issue?

I don't know - how do you stop things like Daniher leaving and Saad leaving...they wanted to go for footy and non-footy reasons. It would be like blaming Sam Power because Josh Dunkley left???
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

Saad leaving was actually a nice piece of business from Dodo but he absolutely fumbled the Daniher exit and only got bailed out by some bullshit FA compensation.

But you could fully blame Dodoro for not getting the Dunkley deal done , especially when he admitted he wouldn’t have done the deal if he was Sam Power either .. that’s admitting he knew it was unders so basically he was taking the piss out of promises to Dunkley.

Whilst I agree with that - and whilst I like Dodoro the bloke I'm not going to defend him professionally - the only way getting Dunkley made sense for Essendon was if they continued to hold draft capital...they needed TALENT and giving up draft picks wasn't smart...

I don't know - his job is to do the best for his club.

Essendon's list is actually getting pretty old and one of the reasons this happens is coaching turnover - coaches come in and can't make decisions on guys sight unseen - so there isn't enough list activity...at the same time, long-term coaches don't want to release guys they have build relationships with so maybe it happens at both ends.

Again - I don't know. I look at some of the players Essendon has brought in and they look pretty talented to me. I never loved the McGrath selection but he plays every week...

Coaching turnover, the lack of a clear plan around player dev etc...those are the things that kill clubs.

It's why I like our setup right now with our own VFL side training at the same facility, cross pollination between AFL and VFL programs etc, relatively stable development coaching team. I'm going to double down on this last piece because whilst the senior coach and his primary assistants are going to be focussed on WINNING the development coaches will be just trying to help individuals get better/prepare them for senior footy...I don't think those things are the same.

I wonder what the future holds for Stringer? Does this make him a delisted player who can go anywhere?

Dons skipper has his say after Stringer, Laverde denied contract extensions

Essendon captain Zach Merrett had a meeting with coach Brad Scott on Friday at which he expressed disappointment at the club?s decision not to offer contract extensions to teammates Jake Stringer and Jayden Laverde beyond 2025.
The discussion involving Merrett came a day after Stringer, Laverde and their manager, Robbie D?Orazio, met Scott, list manager Matt Rosa and chief executive Craig Vozzo.

I think it’s in the age but I can’t read it . Does that mean they paid him out for next year as he triggered another year contract according to the media ?

Stringer is out of contract this year but hit a trigger for next season. It sounds complicated. Laverde has another year

Sounds weird to have a meeting with the coach and complain about extensions not being offered. If they're still there next year what's the issue?

Making Jake Stringer play for another contract seems like good management, and laverde is hardly a 'must-sign' type. What exactly is Merrett's problem?

Sounds like Scott is peed off having them on the list and hoping someone comes looking, although that would actually be stupid if you know they aren’t getting another contract after next year, just wait and see how they go next year and then make a decision if you want them.
Essendon will definitely be trying to trade them, maybe as a sweetener in another deal. Not sure that would work either.
The whole thing makes no sense to be honest.
