The game was 100% out of control.

What is going on with the umpiring right now. If they would take charge of the game instead of faffing about saying 'STAND' we might have something that resembles footy.

Just the casual way they set the mark, call (or don't) call play on, refuse to pay 50m when players walk over the mark or kick/handball the ball away after a whistle...until they randomly pay one (aka the VDM decision)...

It's actually bizarro world right now and 'New Gill' and Laura Kane need to actually show some leadership.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I saw one piece of footage from the game last night that showed 4 or 5 incorrect disposals within about 10 seconds in one contest. All went unpenalised.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

        Re: Essendon

Amazing stats from a Bombers fan:

This will be the 22nd year in a row that we have finished 7th or lower on the ladder. Every year from 2003-2024 inclusive.

        22 years in a row.

To put that in perspective, there is a 33% chance of finishing 1st-6th, and a 66% chance of finishing 7th-18th. So, the 66% chance has come up 22 years in a row, assuming all clubs have an equal chance in a salary cap/draft competition.

The chance of this happening is 1 in 9,345

So, either we are incredibly unlucky, or there is something very, very wrong.

The incredible part is, during those entire 22 years, I've missed two games - Round one 2010 versus Geelong when I was best man at a wedding. And another in 2007 versus Adelaide at Marvel, when I was playing in a Grand Final myself. Something tells me I haven't really got value for money. Glutton for punishment.

I saw that- it was incredible for all the wrong reasons.

I thought Melbourne and Port were umpired very differently for HTB too- they were red hot on Melbourne and Port kept getting away with taking the tackler on and throwing it away.

On another occasion Pickett took on the Port players and two of them pulverised him- one landing flush in his back and one landing on his head- HTB.

As much as I hate Melbourne and Pickett (there was a game in Perth in 2021 that I watched live that might have done it) in a game that was decided by a few points I think they were screwed over.

Besides all that, Melbourne just don't have a proper target in the forward line and kept banging the ball into the F50 towards Pickett who was surrounded by two tall Port players.

Weirdly, I thought they got a few "crowd frees" and Port were harshly dealt with a couple of times.

The AFL has given them so many jobs that simple rules like getting the man on the mark to stand in the right spot and calling play on as soon as a player steps inside the field of play from OOF don't get called.

Then the HTB interpretation which changes game to game...Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Crouch all had good tackles which stuck and should have been rewarded but instead they got a good 3-4 seconds to break through it. Our players options basically become sling them/force them to the ground, or let go.

The standard of umpiring drives me crazy.

No one will act to change it mate. There are FOUR of them out there...it's hard because we're making it hard.

I feel we have a Bruce Willis/Pulp Fiction situation here. If the only thing that matters is the watch, then get the watch.

Control the game by setting the mark, giving clear instructions and penalising players for infractions.
Pay the basics: High contact, holding, in the back, holding the ball, throws.

Throw the ball up straight (you don't even need to bounce the bloody thing)...and let the game move.

The umpiring/rules and the tribunal inconsistencies are both mechanisms deliberately and strategically used by the AFEL to drive content and clicks, and more importantly to suppress any other sports/codes from getting a toe-hold to any valuable media space. Nobody can be that incompetent and for it to not be a deliberate strategy.

What do Kane-o and Dills care? They and the entire Office of the Executive at City Hall will all be getting their 7-figure bonuses irrespective.

Sheedy stepping down from the board at Esserden, but of course they can't cut the cord completely, he'll maintain an ambassadorial role dealing with coteries, past players and influential sponsors.

Essendon icon and AFL Legend Kevin Sheedy steps down from the club’s board

Essendon legend Kevin Sheedy will step down from the Bombers’ board as of the end of this season.

The Bombers confirmed on Thursday night that the four-time premiership coach had opted to step down as a director of the club – almost four years after he was appointed in the wake of a tumultuous campaign.

A club source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the decision was a case of it being “the right time” for the coaching legend to finish up.

Sheedy is arguably the most influential figure in Essendon history, having guided the club to all four of their premierships won since the 1960s, and having built the club into an Australia-wide goliath.

Sheedy will maintain a role at Essendon, however, as a paid ambassador dealing with coteries, past players, and influential sponsors, a position he occupied prior to his appointment to the board in October 2020.
