    Re: Tribunal / suspensions 2024

I think the one arm tackle is really dangerous, especially pulling a players arm behind them. I fear a broken arm is not far away.

Yep. Don't reward pinning one arm.

        I don't think it's broken.

This element of the game has a serious issue right now...it'll play itself out over the next few months. I think Bedford and Cameron should have both received free-kicks (their opponents were holding the ball) and that is where things will land...right now, the rule-makers don't know how to reconcile what a careless tackle is vs incidental head contact and it will be resolved 'soon'.

I'm a bit surprised at the length of each suspension but again, it's where we are right now.
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.

I'm sure that'll teach everyone not to be homophobic, until it doesn't, and we'll whack the next guy with seven or eight weeks and that'll teach everyone not to be homophobic, until it doesn't and we whack the next guy with ten weeks which will teach everyone not to be homophobic.......

You can maim someone intentionally and concuss them, and only get four.

Hey player X, what would you rather, be called some slurs or be given an ABI? I'll take the ABI thanks!
            TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

              Re: Tribunal / suspensions 2024

Something that isn't being mentioned enough when it comes to players being concussed in tackles is the firm nature of the playing surfaces versus not that long ago.

Drainage is designed to remove water from the surface, keep it in a perched water table to feed the roots of the turf (excess water is drained away, the lack of water in the soil profile means the turf's roots draws water upwards from the water reserves below as required) leaving the turf area which is a blend of natural and synthetic harder than it ever has been.

Players are now hitting their heads on extremely hard surfaces designed to keep the game played as quickly as it can be, on surfaces that look great. No matter how wet it is, the ball pings off the surface and still bounces as hard as if it's dry.

I don't really expect anyone to jump on board, but think about how hard a fairway/ green surrounds on a good golf course can be in winter or after a heavy rain. Golf courses have been using this technology for years (with exception to the synthetic and natural turf blend which isn't required on golf courses).

Grounds need to be a bit softer.

It is a conundrum. Unfortunately there will always be an element in society that continue to use racist, homophobic slurs etc. this includes in professional sport. What is the solution? Obviously behaviour change is the key- how do you stop people from behaving that way? I get what the AFL are trying to do through suspensions. But is it the best approach? This is the third incident (that we know off) this year. I am not sure suspensions are the solution but the AFL needs to be seen to do something and an immediate punishment is a fine and suspension- the rest is a long process and that is changing the attitude of society as a whole. We are a long way off this (even though change has occurred) but it is great that organisations like the AFL take the initiative and lead change.

If the AFL doesn’t act it is seen to be weak. When they do hand out a suspension does it befit the action?

                  It's insanely disproportionate.

Education not punishment is the way. He's a kid.

6 weeks is too much for mine.

I get it, don't do it, it's wrong, it's offensive and hurtful.

                  We all know that.

This isn't the way to deal with it though imo. Slap him with a fine, mandatory education where you listen to voices of people who area affected by what he said.

The AFL as an organisation atm is at it's lowest ebb

It's a fair point. I've hit my head on the ground plenty of times playing footy and never been concussed from it. Yes the force isn't as high at the low levels I've played but most importantly the grounds are much softer.

He reportedly used the slur around 10 times to multiple opponents, it was hardly a slip of the tongue in a heated moment. I'm not sure if it deserves 6 weeks but it deserves a suspension.

10 times! Crikey he was on a tear.

                        That's not cool.

I still don't agree with the punishment.

Heeney cracked a guy in the face and got 1 week and they were upset with it. I mean he literally punched him in the face and probably broke his nose. Separate without using your fist.

Hogan got off punching a guy in the face.

Education and hit his wallet is key for this, if he's a recidivist then suspension.

One would hope he would be receiving more education on top of being suspended (which i have no issues with), need to stamp that shit out! Especially being a repeat offender.

I can see why the AFL gave him 6 weeks but there could have been some allowances made for his age and immaturity.
I'd be surprised if 3 weeks wouldn't have sent a very strong message in this instance
